Tyler Reab is one smart teenager. He has chosen his dog over his once favorite sports star.
This 13-year-old boy from Oregon used to love Michael Vick. When he got his autographed Vick football for Christmas in 2005, he was jumping up with excitement.
But now, that has all changed. After Tyler heard that Vick was involved in dog fighting, he chose his pet dog, Otis, over his love for the ex-Atlanta Falcons quarterback.
He gave one-year-old Otis the football and let him chew on it until it popped.
“From the beginning, it was his choice as to what he wanted to do with it,” his father Chris Reab said. “I commend him.”
Tyler and his uncle shot video footage of Otis tackling the ball. At first, this mixed breed black dog was not too interested at first, but then he started to play with the football and walked around with it in his mouth. Finally, Otis chewed it so hard the ball deflated.
When Tyler got the ball from his uncle, it came in a clear case and became his prized possession. He frequently used Windex to buff and shine the case.
But with Vick pleading guilty to a dog fighting conspiracy charge, Tyler wanted to get rid of it. Everyone in the Reab family loves animals and Vick had no place in their lives anymore.
The chewed-up football is selling on eBay with a starting bid of 99 cents. The family has pledged to donate 100 percent of the proceeds to the Oregon Humane Society and Hope for Kids Foundation, a nonprofit organization that seeks to protect Oregon’s after-school programs.
Tyler’s father said he is extremely proud of his son.
