http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/02/20/7182/ "The drug safety agency conducts no unannounced plant visits overseas. Even when it does visit, inspectors have no independent translators. Obviously, the agency’s lack of language skills played a role in this tragedy. But so did the FDA’s faulty databases; the agency has conflicting information about the number of foreign plants shipping into the United States in two databases it maintains.

Because much of the inspection budget comes from user fees paid by drug companies, the FDA does far more inspections in countries with well-developed regulatory systems such as Switzerland and Germany than it does in China."

http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/02/20/7182/ FDA is "supposed inspect foreign plants before permitting them to ship drugs or chemicals into the country. But FDA officials said this week that they mistook the plant for another with a similar name that already had been inspected. Chinese regulators also failed to inspect the plant.
The first reported victims were eight Missouri children experiencing kidney failure. Last November, while getting dialysis at a pediatric hospital, they had life-threatening allergic reactions.

Within weeks, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had reports of more than 350 similar cases from 12 states, most of them adults. Four people died. The culprit turned out to be contaminated heparin, a drug used in surgery and dialysis to prevent blood from clotting.

The FDA is so short-staffed and underfunded, the Government Accountability Office reported last month, that it would need 13 years to inspect every foreign drug plant that ships products into this country. Its record in China is even worse.

That country has more than 700 plants approved to ship drugs to the U.S. Between 2002 and 2007, the FDA inspected just 88 of them. At that rate, it would need 40 years to inspect every Chinese plant now shipping drugs into this country."

http://sustainabletable.org/blog/ "There were some terrifying findings recently in a few large scale slaughterhouses around the country- Minnesota, Indiana, and California.

MN and IN slaughterhouse workers were infected with what the Center for Disease Control is calling a “progressive inflammatory neuropathy.” These workers are already in varying states of the condition, from tingling limbs to severely disabled. Read more at Wired News."
[here's the link for that wired article: http://tinyurl.com/3asypa]

[NOTE: AFTER READING THIS I WONDER IF WE SHOULD BE WATCHING FOR DUMPING OF PORK IN PETFOOD]

"And in CA last week video footage was released from Hallmark Meat Packing slaughterhouse showing the workers abusing already sick animals (downers). The meat from this facility supplies Westland Meat Company. Westland sells their meat to agencies who feed needy families, the elderly and to schools through the National School Lunch Program.
GO DON EARL!!:
The one thing the study did show is the crystals were 70% cyanuric acid.

Industrial grade melamine on the other hand is typically around 1% cyanuric acid.

So, how do you get a crystal that is 70% cyanuric acid and 30% melamine out of melamine that is 1% (or less) cyanuric acid?

According to information released by the FDA, some pet food samples tested as high as 2500 ppm cyanuric acid. Some melamine positive samples tested as high as 3000 ppm melamine. Under the circumstances, the highest level of cyanuric acid possible as a melamine byproduct would max out at 30 ppm.

Where did all the cyanuric acid come from?

Anonymous (Jean and Sandi) -- I still have the second cat that ate the bad canned food (the one Trader Joe's claims never had melamine although Menu Foods makes it). I give her several drops of Common Juniper in her water everyday to de-tox the kidneys, and 3 drops of Rowan Tree in her wet food. I use it for her for feline herpes virus, but I have been using it for 4 1/2 years myself as an anti-tumor agent along with other gemmotherapy products. I was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer Aug. 25, 2003. I did use conventional treatment too, but God and the gemmo is what healed me. You can find out more by going to www.thepetwhisperer.com, or google gemmotherapy and read up. God Bless the pets.

Don Earl -- I agree with you. In all the china-hate fear mongering, people seem to have forgotten the Americans who were found to have put melamine in grain. That info is right here on Itchmo.

I heard about the indictments on NPR the other day. They said "dozens" of pets died. We know it was thousands. Lets all write to the news and tell them how many furr-kids we lost. Lets demand that they ask the FDA how many animals were reported to them by consumers. Forget the vets reporting -- many of them were fooled too.

Also, are the Feds etc. going to go back a year or two and get evidence? They should. Purr-Purr became ill in mid 2005 with renal failure, but I didn't know what was wrong with her. She died in July 2006. Her soft food was TRADER JOE'S -- a BIG CUSTOMER OF MENU FOODS. I will not buy any food that is associated in any way with Menu Foods or Diamond. My cats eat Innova Evo and Holistic Select now.

IF CROOKED PEOPLE GOT PAST THE INEPT FDA AND KILLED OUR PETS, THEY CAN DO IT TO US AND OUR CHILDREN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LETS ALL WRITE THE NEWS AGENCIES AND ASK AND RE-ASK THEM TO DO THEIR OWN INVESTIGATIONS.

The FDA did the "investigation", is using science that makes high school students laugh to cover up the truth of the involvement of the big pet food company's and Wilbur-Ellis and has gone to court to say that the FDA has no duty to investigate.

Do you think the lawyers for the China company's and ChemNutra don't know all this? Think they won't use it?

Hi eveyone, small companies do not buy from china, these companies got huge and bought large amounts of the glutens. I cook 1/2 half of my dogs food and use Eagle Pack Hollistic chicken only. they are a small company and don't buy anything from china. They don't use wheat, corn or any glutens. This stuff is a filler and not good for our fur babies. if its in your food its junk switch to something else. I am not trusting any company now. www.eaglepack.com is a link for the Hollistic dog food. if any one switches to them call or write them or any company they are thinking of switching too and ask questions. First of all where do you buy your wheat and corn and gluten. The answer should be we don't use that. I still seing people shopping at wal-mart and the grocery store and buying the same foods that menu food made that is asking for trouble. go to a small pet store and ask questions.

RE: "When I had a conversation with Dr. Huff at the Univ. of Guelph’s small animal clinic (the Univ. that did the animal testing for Menu), with respect to the Cyanuric Acid, he stated that it was a by-product. It was almost impossible to get a definite reason as to why this was in the food, and or the amounts. He also agreed that it was not just the Melamine. but the combination of these 2 chemicals that created the Toxic Cocktail."

The U of G studies leave a lot to be desired. The most glaring flaw is the only animals they studied were those provided by Menu Foods. There is NO chain of custody to estabilish exactly what Menu pumped into those pets in order to kill them.

In the pet food samples I had tested, the cyanuric acid positive sample was manufactured in September 2006 - 2 months before Menu Foods introduced their melamine gravy style pet food.

The acetaminophen positive sample was manufactured in April 2006.

Menu Foods has been producing poisoned pet food for a long time. Long before any China finger pointing started or was possible. The xenophobic China hype disgusts me.

If anyone wants to identify the source of the murderers of a quarter million cats, look no farther than the label on the can.

It says, "PRODUCT OF THE USA".

It says, “PRODUCT OF THE USA”.
