I am absolutely sickened that Romney has won any primaries. New Hampshire and Nevada: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? I don't judge a politician based upon his/her personal life. I care about issues, not personality, not family scandals. Huckabee's been criticized for his son's animal cruelty. I'm not basing my voting decisions based on that. Clinton's being criticized for her husband's affairs. I'm not basing my voting decisions based on that. Other candidates are being praised for the friendly nature. Hey, I'm voting for a president, not a beer-drinking buddy. But Romney?? His dog-strapping and nonchalant way of speaking about his animal cruelty DOES speak to his character. You can't run a country if you have absolutely no heart.

What’s the big deal? The dog excitedly scampered up there. The dog wouldn’t like it if it didn’t feel good…basic principle of behaviorism. It was probably more comfortable than a Livestock trailer, anyway. There may have been a better way of bringing the dog, but this is not deliberate cruelty. What Michael Vick and his friends did was cruelty.

Are you sure this isn't just some kind of urban legend? Sounds like a scene from "National Lampoon's" (Original) "Vacation"; (except there the dog was *accidently* left tied to a rear bumper!)

Looks more like callous indifference than deliberate cruelty to the dog. He could have put his dog in the car & strapped his luggage to the roof rack. He should have rearranged things so the dog could ride inside the car if he had to hose down both the car & the dog halfway through the trip. We are going to need an intelligent President to correct problems the present one has gotten us into. Lack of empathy for their Irish Setter isn't a good sign of what we should be looking for in our President.

chip wrote, "I would never put my dog on the roof for a 12 hour trip. I may have back in the early 80’s when animal rights awareness was not what it is today. But I’m sure Governor Romney would not do such a thing these days...."

Uh-huh. That's why Romney came out today in defense of his actions back then. He still sees nothing wrong with them.

Face it, this was Romney's "macaca" moment. He's self-destructed as a candidate. Mitt Romney the Dog Torturer.

Still don't believe he's done, chip? A sample quote from another, unrelated article is very revealing (although poor Seamus would probably not be very surprised):

'Romney, Torture, and Teens - The former governor's connections to abusive "tough love" camps.'

"...The suit alleges that teens were locked in outdoor dog cages, exercised to exhaustion, deprived of food and sleep, exposed to extreme temperatures without adequate clothing or water, severely beaten, emotionally brutalized, and sexually abused and humiliated. Some were even made to eat their own vomit."

Think they used Seamus' old cage? It sounds a lot like his 'vacation' to Ontario.

Which of the five brothers are you, anyway, chip?
http://fivebrothers.mittromney.com/

Give it up. This is a true "macaca" moment with no hope of successful damage control. Although I do like the quote at the end of the Outside the Beltway article as it fits flip-flopper Romney so very well:

"In Romney’s defense, however, I’d note that the incident took place over twenty-five years ago. Goodness knows, his views on dog travel have certainly changed half a dozen times in the interim."

No doubt. Depending on the audience, Mitt has never met a position that he didn't like - for the duration of that speech, anyway.

Convertible lover:

If it's no problem for the dog, then how about trying it yourself and getting back to us with the results?

Get a pal with a hardtop to to strap a playpen on the roof, slap some cardboard on the front side for a "windshield", then you hop in, and have him take you out on the interstate. After an hour, have your friend pull over at a rest stop and hose you down (by that point you may really need it). Then, back on the interstate for a few more hours. Of course the pup had to stay for twelve, but I'm not as cruel as Mitt, so I'll let you off with 3 or 4

Oh and you can wear clothes, but no footwear, gloves, hats, goggles, glasses, or earplugs.

Can't wait to hear how much you loved it.

Convertible lover,

You're probably horrorfied at the thought of a child strapped to the top of a car, as I am. It's called a mental exercise. Don't change the topic here. What does the cargo hold of a plane have anything to with Mitt Romney exposing his poor dog to the elements for 12 hours? Most reasonable people would find his actions horrorfying. Animal control officials thought that his actions should have been looked into. Why are you defending a guy who didn't care enough to properly care for his dog? No one accused you of being a bad person by driving with your dog in a convertible.

To Convertible lover: some pet owners do consider their pets that special that would as you say,be elavated status as children or grandchildren. I call my daughters pets as my grandkids since I have none.

My pet Marley was sooo special and loved. That I grieve for her deeply.

Call us crazy but some of us love our pets that much. And some people that may be all they have. Some pets give a person so much loyalty and love back sometimes more than anyone else.

If you don't feel that way about your pets, then its your choice.

Our family pets have ranked up there with my kids because they all are special to me.

Anonymous _ the fact that you would rank a child with a dog is alarming. I have had pets all my life and would never ever think to elevate them to the status of my children or grandchildren.

I fly and my dog goes in a kennel on long extended flights, I don't know which is worse the airplane seats or the kennel. I know my dog hates this part of flying, he would much rather be in my convertible.
