A Helpful Paw

Therapy DogAbout one in every 150 children is diagnosed with autism and one aspect that is especially difficult for autistic children is a lack of companionship. 4 Paws for Ability is changing that. This organization provides service dogs for disabled persons particularly children with autism. The impact has been great and life changing for these children.

Tyler, a 10-year-old child with autism, had an incredibly hard life and wanted to end his life. That was until he met Scooby, an autism assistance dog. His confidence and his social skills have improved. 4 Paws for Ability has placed 200 dogs with children since 1998. It takes 5 years for an autism assistance dog to be fully trained. The dogs are trained to interact with the children and help them with decreasing their repetitive self-stimulation by nudging the child to take them back to their surroundings. Also the dogs are trained to track and rescue if the child runs off. What a true best friend.
