I agree with Straybaby & Moony too. What's wrong with ASPCA? Everything i've seen & heard about them seems good. I wish we had them here. I watch them with Pit Bulls all the time on tv. I hope they can save a lot of them. Has anybody heard if there are some young ones.

I agree with you, Straybaby. Heck, if people want to know how the ASPCA in NYC works, they should watch Animal Precinct on Animal Planet. They show pits being evaluated and adopted out, often from abusive and fighting situations.

I really don't understand the automatic euthhanasia rule for pits. Why don't they GET IT??? If they remove all pit bulls from the street, the people who train them to be used as weapons (or fighting dogs) will just move on to another breed!! -- Any breed capable of doing damage. That's basically EVERY breed that has shown potential for use in law enforcement etc. or every breed that a family might want as a dog that also is capable of providing some "guard"-ianship, or scare off intruders, etc. Every breed that is large enough to do damage with a bite. German Shepherds, Rotties, Dobies, the list goes on.

What, do they want to ban all large dog breeds?

And if its true that pits are more prone to aggression (and I don't know if it is) I am sure it is ONLY BECAUSE in recent years the BAD people have been breeding for this trait. That is reversible with a different kind of selective breeding.

And when they ban pits, it's just another 20 years or so before we start seeing increased aggression bred into Germans, or Dobies, or Rotties, or the other breed that takes their place.

It's the PEOPLE, not the dogs.

"ASPCA is marginally better; "

speaking from experience, they are much more than marginally better. they do a hell of a lot for the dogs in their shelter with a majority being pit bulls. they do have a behavior staff and actively rehab dogs. not just one or 2, but a constant flow. i suspect one of the reasons they are inviting others is also an attempt to save more. BF can provide sanctuary which ASPCA can't. in the event more of the dogs can be saved, badrap and others would prob get some of the dogs because of their experience. i think it also sets a good example for the future by bringing in experts, especially with so many watching. gonna be pretty hard for the HSUS/PETA so continue their mass euth stance for fighting dogs if some of these dogs evaluate fine.

people need to keep in mind the ASPCA is an active shelter in NYC. they are familiar with evaluating pits and other dogs from all kinds of situations. and they have the facility and staff to work with the animals to make them adoptable and a hospital to treat the ones that need it. they also provide many other services here and nationally. to say they are marginally better than HSUS or to put them on the same level is just wrong.

and speaking of Diane Jessup, she sure doesn't help the pits using them for tough a$$ photo shoots with rappers and such. nobody is going to see the image and know that it's an upstanding pit. they are going to see the overall look of the image as bad a$$. can't figure out why she's presenting them in that light with all the good work she does with them.

The ASPCA is at least not trying to be the sole experts here. I take their calling on Bad Rap to help them a very positive sign. They do not want to be in the position of being second guessed by bully breed rescuers.

Now PETA and the HSUS already know everything about everything, including that ALL pitbulls are vicious so thank goodness they are not involved.

Diane Jessup has tried repeatedly to get a chance to look at the dogs for the possibility of them being trained to sniff out drugs and explosives in her LawDogs program, but has not gotten so much as a "don't call us, we'll call you" response. I don't think the HSUS is terribly interested in saving any of them. It's too bad, because they seem to be thinking only of rehoming them as pets, when they could become Law Dogs. A police officer would be much better prepared to handle a high-drive dog, plus the dog would have a job to do, which is something positive for a dog that might not make the best "sit around the house" pet.

I very much fear we'll wind up having to chalk them up as dead along with the ones Limp Vick personally killed. :-(

If even one of those poor dogs could be salvaged, it would be so poignant. I hope for at least that much.

well, at least it's not HSUS, whose vicious cruelty is on display in that quote.

ASPCA is marginally better; at least they actually run a shelter and adopt out pit bulls. But their attitude about dogs seized from dogfighters is still less-than-positive.

They are apparently asking some people, including BadRap from California to assist them. BR has a GOOD record in evaluating and rehoming fighting dogs and their blog has some excellent comments on the subject: http://badrap-blog.blogspot.com/

But there's definitely going to be some kind of p***ing match and power struggle about this... and of course about who gets Vicks money. I just pray that some of the dogs get out alive.

A Bullie Rescue group should be the ones to evaluate those poor dogs. Let's hope they are given a real chance at rehabilitation.
