It's funny how people are always quick to judge when it isn't you yourself. I don't think this guy meant to harm the dog at all. From what I have read, it sounds more like the media has taken a few different routes to his story, I've read too many different ones and I'm sure all of them didn't come from Babineaux himself. I love animals, especially dogs but I don't think a person should be thrown in jail and lose their own life behind circumstancial evidence either. I also don't believe he put his baby in danger, I didn't read anywhere it said that the child was in the room with the dog. All of you negative thinkers that believe you are so "perfect" I hope you are never accused of something you couldn't prove to be wrong, but then again you would know how it feels.

Spinning a dog on a leash does nothing to disorient them in any way. Our dogs always chase their tails, spinning on one leg and they are perfectly okay after ready to chase their canine pals.
Sounds like this joke of a trainer needs to be investigated for animal cruelty even more than Babineaux.

And what's with these judges? Are they totally clueless? Sounds to me like they just want to get these cases off the docket. Nastygrams should go to them, too.

I agree, that trainer sounds like a bozo.

We took our male schnauzer to a dog training class. The most "violent" thing they advocated was to bop him on the head with an empty 2 liter pop bottle (not the kind with the hard plastic bottom). It works, doesn't hurt at all (did it to myself), is a real attention getter. All I have to do now is pull out the empty bottle and they all 3 settle down.

"The dog’s trainer told Babineaux to spin Kilo on a leash whenever he became aggressive. This disorients the dog and the person can become in control again."

so when are they going to arrest this "trainer"? so many people end up handling dogs the wrong way because of "trainers" like this. somebody on our breed list was told by a trainer to grip their dog and and throw her to the ground as soon as she walks through a door. thankfully the person disregarded the "advice". these are the people PETA should be going after, not the unsuspecting owners that think they are getting advice from a "professional".

Credit to Babineaux? Are you crazy?

First of all, you're telling me this huge ball player didn't have the brains to keep his kid away from the dog when he knew it had a history of violence? And the dog was on Prozac?

Nahhhh, too many puzzle pieces are missing here. This man is a stupid jacka** and should have been charged with child endangerment in addition to animal abuse. I think he just used some possible past history to pump up his defense.

I think the real truth is that he didn't like the dog and wanted it gone and voila!

You should never "rehabilitate" a violent dog. IMO dogs like this should be euthanized, not integrated into a family with small children. I give credit to Babineaux for trying as he probably did not want to put his dog to sleep but most veterinarians and good trainers will tell you that these dogs usually can't be rehabbed. Dogs too can suffer from mental illness and act as loaded weapons when they remain in contact with humans and other pets.

Although there is probably much to the story that is not here, I can't figure out why you would take a dog with a history of violence , use violent "training methods" like spinning them on the end of a leash (I've not heard of this "technique" before), and then call that "integrating him into the family" because you expose a five month old baby to this dog, then claim you needed to act in "self defence". Ordinary idiots should not be "training" previously violent dogs and sure as heck should not be keeping them in a family situation that involves small children. Rehabilitating a violent dog should only be done by people who know what they are doing.
