ANOTHER RECALL: Ol’Roy Wet Foods, Jerky Treats, Gravy Train Beef Sticks and Pounce Meaty Morsels
Del Monte has announced that their Ol’Roy brand wet food, as well as the other brands have been made using the tainted wheat gluten also used by Menu Foods. The other brands are: Jerky Treats, Gravy Train Beef Sticks, Pounce Meaty Morsels, Dollar General, and Happy Tails. They are now recalling their food.
Thanks Howl911. Full release here.
UPDATE: Del Monte is another major manufacturer of “private label” wet foods and a competitor to Menu Foods. This tainted wheat gluten is beginning to look like an industry-wide problem.
UPDATE 2: SUPERVALU recalls their Happy Tails brand from the following stores: Albertsons, Acme, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s and Star Markets Stores because of the Del Monte recall. (Thanks everyone for your tips.)

Del Monte Pet Products Voluntarily Withdraws Specific Product Codes of Pet Treats and Wet Dog Food Products
SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–As a precautionary measure, Del Monte Pet Products is voluntarily recalling select product codes of its pet treat products sold under the Jerky Treats®, Gravy Train® Beef Sticks and Pounce Meaty Morsels® brands as well as select dog snack and wet dog food products sold under private label brands. A complete list of affected brands and products is below.
The Company took this voluntary recall action immediately after learning this morning from the FDA that wheat gluten supplied to Del Monte Pet Products from a specific manufacturing facility in China contained melamine. Melamine is a substance not approved for use in food. The FDA made this finding as part of its ongoing investigation into the recent pet food recall.
The adulteration occurred in a limited production quantity on select product codes of the brands below. This recall removes all Del Monte pet products with wheat gluten procured from this manufacturing facility from retail shelves.
No other Del Monte Pet Products treats, biscuits or wet dog food products are impacted by this recall, and no Del Monte dry cat food, dry dog food, wet cat food or pouched pet foods are subject to this voluntary recall. The affected products comprise less than one-tenth of one percent of Del Monte Pet Products’ annual pet food and pet treat production.
Del Monte Pet Products has proactively engaged and fully cooperated with the FDA since the start of its investigation. The adulterated ingredients were used in limited production over the last three months for those items identified by specific product codes. Del Monte Pet Products has not used wheat gluten from this manufacturing facility in China in any other pet products except those described below.
Consumers should discontinue feeding the products with the Product Codes detailed below to their pets.
Del Monte Pet Products are 100% guaranteed and all returned product will be refunded.
Del Monte Pet Products customers can visit our website (www.delmonte.com) or contact our Consumer Hotline at (800) 949-3799 for further information about the recall and for instructions on obtaining a product refund.

We can thank Ronald Reagan for this mess. This is what happens when the government allows industry to regulate itself. In the next election, let the Republicans know how you feel.

The FDA didn’t tell them until THIS MORNING?
The FDA is worse than worthless, they’re criminals.

By now, it should be obvious as to who the “suppliers” are. Why isn’t it releasoing the information?

Oh, this is a fine mess… my cat was eatting pounce “crunchy” cat treats?
(the recall code missed the one i was giving her by a letter Tp7(a)
it was corn glutten not that dam wheat). i called delmonte and complained
she was sick , and i was able to help her over the crisis, after she was feeling better i unknowingly offer some poune treats? the cat did something
she’s never done before? she swatted at that bag.. and looked at me like
i was nuts, then ran off… i told delmonte this and they sent me a letter it just arrived today? in it they stated the cats behavior (swatting at my hand) wasn’t conected to their product? (somehow i get the feeling someones bull$h!ting me? i am still unsure as to her overall health?
she seems alright, but a bit off.. if they list those pounce treats we’r going
to have a some trouble? i have NO patience with crap.. sadly
i fought the vietcong in ‘69 lossing most of the guys i knew. it’d be sad
to lose it.. i mean they had me on meds for years? (P.T.S.

I Beg you, “Anonymous” and especially the managers of this site——-we cannot let this national tragedy morph into political finger pointing and ad hominum attacks. There is plenty of blame to go around. Your comments about deregulation may have some merit, but it is good to remember that it was the Clinton administration who pushed for the passage of NAFTA and the entry of China into the World Trade Organization. That is all water over the bridge right now. The sick pets and the pet owners whose animals are dead and dying are not Democrats or Republicans. They are devistated fellow Americans. This is a problem that affects us all and we all need to work TOGETHER to get it resolved. Thank You.

johnnypaycut, I am with you. I still have my cat who is frozen…(too cold to bury him yet, ground is frozen up here. now it looks like there is going to be a postmortem coming for my poor baby boy)
I reported that he had been eating 9 lives canned food when he got all the symptoms and died in my arms….
I wrote to Del Monte and they said their stuff was ok. I told them it wasn’t.
THEY LIED! They needed the FDA to tell them they used bad gluton? How stupid are they that they didn’t check?
Where is the class action for Del Monte? Point me in the right direction…I have my reciepts from Walmart stating I bought that crap in a can….grrrrrr.

This is the results of NO oversight and the out -sourcing of our pet food ingredients and companies having NO gov. standards enforced - I NEVER knowingly buy ANY pet products that are made out of the USA -even that can not keep my fur babies from being poisoned by greed and lying — the FDA has been late with the warnings WalMart still was selling “SpecialKitty” Mon. March 26 th. cuts/gravy/wet foods!I noticed WalMart has NOT issued any statement Too busy making $$$$ while our fur babies die I will NOT buy DelMonte anything again or WalMart brands -at least other co.s have alerted us!
March 31st, 2007 at 11:19 pm
If my babies get sick or God forbid die I will be sueing EVERYONE and involved from “Menu ” to WalMart and Del Monte as my cats have eaten “9 Lives” -”SpecialKitty”–Pounce” cat treats and my dogs have eaten treats made by OL’Roy-and DelMonte foods and “Alpo “wet food!!!! I do not mind giving my name and E mail:

Elizabeth,
This is a political issue. I most likely lost a dog because of the tainted food, and it was due to a DRY food not maufactired by any of the companies that have come forth so far. This is just the tip of the iceberg. More will follow. True, Clinton pushed NAFTA, but ufortunately, it is the Republicans who are to blame for making the FDA ineffective. Government is not inherently evil, as the conservatives would have you believe.Things need to change regarding regulation of business, and the Democrats are the only one that will do it. So far only 3 members of Congress have called for a full investigation of this matter, and just by coincidence, they all happen to be Democrats !

Check out http://www.progressivelaw.com/.....&sid=8
I also know the Texas Attorney General is taking complaints. I hope this helps you.
I have been emailing my congress people in the hopes they will take action.
What kills me is how do we know that we are not being fed the same BS.
I am sure Del Monte will get sued as well, what really concerns me is that they also make human food.
I have a feeling this is only the start, human food will be next.

I can’t help but think this is getting ridiculous, the story just keeps changing and the range of brands and things affected just keeps growing. I said it once and I will say it again.. I don’t think we ever got the “whole” story and as sad as it is I don’t think we will. I wonder how long it will be before they tell us it has got into the human food supply (if they bother to at all). I just can’t believe it has gotten this far in the first place and I am still furious. It really shouldn’t have happened in the first place but now theres plenty of sick and dead pets and to top it all off that sick feeling you get just thinking we might be next….
April 1st, 2007 at 5:11 am
Everytime I see another alert, I get a sick feeling in my stomach. Heck, everytime one of my babies throw up a hairball, or god forbid, just throws up (I have one that gobbles his food sometimes)-I am ready to call the vet. All of my babies are senior citizens-1 is 16 yrs old-and I WILL HAVE A HEAD ROLLING IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ANY OF THEM!!!!. Or, if that doesn’t work, I will show some of those EXECUTIVES what my Indian Daddy showed me about scalping!
April 1st, 2007 at 7:58 am
Please don’t feed your pets anything with corn gluten or soy gluten. It is contaminated also. Even though we have not yet had any official recalls related to the corn and soy, gluten is not good for us or our pets. Please check the labels of your food for ingredients and stay away from anything with corn, soy, or wheat. It is just a matter of time till products containing gluten of any type are recalled.

I have been fully aware of the pet food manufactures for all beloved pet owners for some time now. Extreme caution should be investigated before endeavouring into any pet food these days. As fillers and unecessary ingredients are added to the pet food products. Same as in humans I bet people didn’t know that phosphates a nitrate and a preservative and is a manuafactoring of bleach is used to bleach our chickens we buy in the shop that are white skins when there original colour is brown. Bleaching of fish in our canned foods as well. Preservatives in canned foods and sliced processed salad meats and sausages. All preservatives simply destroy ingredients of nutrients for the nutritional value destroyed in any foods. Hences accumalation in the bodies of humans and pets does bring the onset of health problems and diseases to name just a few. Dog fed on dog biscuits alone for the life of the pet would only live to 9 years as there pancreas gives up on them due to the stresses of the good will of the human being giving kindness unaware that they’ll do more damage then good. It’s a wake up call! I should think that the Wealth Fare organisation should dig deeper into investigation on Commercial Food products and set up a team of experts to investigates the pet food industry a lot closer then what’s happening now as this is only the tip of the ice berg. It’s gona get a lot worse before it gets better. There should be a government control to put a lid on it and clean up the permissable havac it causing everyone in the processed foods for our beloved pets and us humans too. The writing is on the wall. The community as a whole globally has to unite in this to push the governments to take a responsible action on this matter otherwise why should it be us the consumer suffer in the healthiness of us humans and pets and economical dent into our wallets with regards to vet bills and hospital bills is unecessary if the government acts now before it’s too late.

The FDA that approves dead diseased animals and euthanized animals to be used in dog food is criminal. I can only hope that all the companies involved lose lots of money. The media also needs to tell the truth. Thousands have died. They report 16?? Right!! Wonder whos paying them off. How much of this crap is in human food?? What if babies were affected? It would be a different story. The ultimate outcome will be about as interesting as the Iraqi war, ongoing and no result. The law suits will never come to fruition. Feed a non grain diet and raw meat. We who know our dogs make our own food or use a high end dog food. Nutura, Fromm, Wellness, Innova and such. This whole money grabbing industry at the expense of our animals makes me sick. Our dogs are not disposable.
April 1st, 2007 at 11:36 am
I had switched to Del Monte’s Meow mix after my cats got ill eating the IAMS, nutro MaxCat and maybe the Pounce too. My sickest cat had thrown up about 15 times the day before I switched and she was hungry but unable to hold food and starting to stagger.
She threw up every bite of Meow mix, which comes up red because of the dye. I took her off it and fed her Popeye’s fast food chicken and it was the first time she had not thrown up.
Last night I bought a cuisanart mini food processor for $30, cooked a steak rare, ground it and fed it to her. She gobbled it and didnt throw up until today, and that might be the Wysong kibbles I had out for her.
My cats would not even eat the Wellness kibbles I set out. I threw them out after I heard it was made by Menu.
Cats had refused to eat the new improved Pounce moist treats while they gobbled the old recipe. I have the old can to compare ingredients.
For almost a YEAR my cats have had terrible fur, finicky appetites. They would eat the gravy from fancy feast but not the chunks so I had stopped that. My Vet said “funny, that’s just what my cats do”.
For almost a YEAR my cats have been losing big chunks of fur. I thought they still had the fungus/and/or mite problem. Their fur was horrible looking and they were miserable. The fur loss has stopped since I ended the pet food. Two of the three cats have a bit of shine in their fur. The baby I pray for.
This is a conspiracy of silence. The government is naming some of the American companies.
Why doesn’t anyone name the Chinese supplier?
Are they afraid the Chinese will cash in the trillion dollars of trade surplus they hold much of it in Treasury notes?
They only reason not to reveal the Chinese supplier is blackmail from the Chinese government and fear by American politicos, and companies who don’t want to stop the Chinese gravy train.
It has to be.
I am sick. I am a Reagan conservative but Nader was right about NAFTA in this sense. We needed open trade, but we sold our soul to get it. We have health and safety requirements on OUR companies, but NAFTA says we cannot put standards on foreign goods coming in so foreign companies can use DDT, melamine, rat posion that are banned in food here.
Florida tried to put safety standards on foreign citrus coming into the state. The NAFTA regulators imposed millions of dollars of fines a day upon the state unless they rescinded, so Florida had to give in. I remember that. Our government said: police the Americans, protect the foreigners, screw the public, the hell with America, we are global.
Both DEM and GOP and together on this. They both want amnesty and no borders. They both want to protect foreign suppliers of poison. They all want to cover their asses and their wallets. If we all die, there are plenty of illegals to take our places.
How could melamine get into what gluten? Look up how to make gluten. It has to be washed repeatedly in water. Chinese water. The plastic companies doump all their waste into the water in China.

At least one Manufacturer seems to care. The best thing I know to do is to boycott Menu Foods, Purina, and Del Monte and any others that are not keeping our pets health in mind.
At this point I am willing to pay the additional money to support a company that puts our pets health before profitability.
April 1st, 2007 at 10:39 pm
I can not say how angry I am, I thought I was buying the best, and spoiling my dog with treats, and all this time I was doing my beloved pet harm.
We are told do not feed your pet from the table thats bad…. well guess what from now on I will be cooking his meals at home.
NO MORE store bought foods or treats will find its way into my house.
Why on earth would we trust them ever again?
What we also need to find out is how much of this tainted wheat is in our foods such as Pastas - breads - cereals and such.
It is beyond me how we only find out after the fact, where were the people that are suppose to be protecting us from such things?
I blame the FDA as much as I do these companys that have posioned the products for the almighty dollar.
April 2nd, 2007 at 7:58 am
Ol’ Roy is primarily a WalMart brand and they probably didn’t give a crap if it was recalled or not, just as long as they could sell something and profit from it.
About a year or so ago, I bought some Special Kitty cat food and took home to my cats. One of my cats got deathly ill and vomitted all over the house, then there were two others who ate it and got very sick. I went back to the WalMart and told them that something was very wrong with their cat food and they told me “Well, just don’t feed it to your cats.” They did nothing to find out what it was or to replace the bag I had bought!!
Yeah, the FDA and the distributors are ALL worthless!!
April 2nd, 2007 at 3:50 pm
I hope in one way it does start killing people and not just pets. Then _maybe_ something will be done about it. Right now with it only being animals this is NOT being taken seriously.
Oh yeah and boycott _anything_ made in China. I know it’s hard because so much is made there, but do what you can. I know I am.
April 2nd, 2007 at 5:55 pm
I am completely appauled about all of this. Since I cannot have children myself, I’ve resorted to becomming a cat lady. Right now I have three cats at my home (ages 3, 5, and 11). I’ve been feeding them POUNCE DRY FOOD for their entire lives and it wasn’t until a few months ago that my precious babies began to throw up. I thought that they might just have a cold, so I brought them to the vet, who said that there was nothing wrong. I thought I was treating my babies by giving them FANCY FEAST CANNED WET FOOD once a day. I also noticed a few months ago that they weren’t devouring it like they used to. They strictly ate the gravy but not the juice itself. I also give my poor ol’ kitty Reecy POUNCE MOIST TREATS. Each time I’ve given them to her, she’s throw up. I’ve even noticed that her stools have become more liquid and have spots of BLOOD! I also tried feeding her INNOVA CANNED WET FOOD because the vet said that would be good for her old frail body. She wont even TOUCH the stuff. Every afternoon when I come home, I find atleast three piles of throw up, just from Reecy. The other day I almost fainted when I saw Gwen cough up a furball.
This is getting rediculous. I thought that I was being a good mother, feeding my babies what they loved and what was healthy for them. Occationally I would feed them chicken bones like the vet ordered. Now I will never buy another cat food product from the stores. I will be setting three extra plates at the dinner table for my three cats now.

I actually think this has been going on for quite awhile. I have been feeding my dog Ol’ Roy for nearly a year and the oldest started having vomit problems, stomach problems, loosing fur…. I guess a toxicology report would be in order. He straightened out after changing foods. Still not his old self though. For the few of you out there that obviously have not worked or traveled to places like China, you don’t get it. The US government has no ability to get any information from any company that operates in China. And yet you will cry out how the US government should be involved to a point of regulating everything. That’s how the Chinese government works and you can clearly see the result. The result of people not buying these products will take care of all of the little stockholders and CEOs. As long as we don’t care what the label says on it, re; made in china, we will just spurn further episodes of this and other tragedies.
April 3rd, 2007 at 10:02 am
I am so sick like the rest of you over all of this! My dog got sick in January but got better once I gave him rice and hamburger. I thought it was passing thing until recently he got sick again. All the symptoms of poisoning. He did have some NOW RECALLED Jerkey treats, some Alpo Prime Cuts (just a little) and has Purina Dry Food which he turns his nose up at. (Now I wonder if that will be next!) I have returned to the rice and hamburger mixture and he is doing better. He has lost weight. We go to the vet tomorrow. What am I going to feed him? He is 50 lbs and 5 years old. I will ask at the vet which yes will cost me $$$$ as I’m sure they will want a blood test. I am so mad right now! I would like to feed this stuff to the producers of this product and see how they like it!
April 3rd, 2007 at 3:45 pm
To Whom It May Concern,
I’m mad as hell about this. I have fed my four dogs a few of these products and they have been sick at various times over the past 6 months. One had intravenous fluids for 3 days to get her past her
diagnosed kidney failure. Three of them have had to be on antibiotics and my male German Shepherd is currently on antibiotics for bleeding from the urinary track.
Where is the responsibility for oversight here, if we are to trust the people with the health of our beloved pets? This cheap Chinese market that is being shoved down our throats at our own economic peril is overshadowing our own health and that of our irreplaceable pets.
Not only is it costing me a fortune, my pets are suffering irreversible damage that may lead to further long term costs…and all because we have put our trust in in these huge concolmerates like Wal-Mart and Kmart whom have likewise put their trust -without oversight- into questionable governments, that have proven to be untrustworthy,…and all that, for profit motives. This is abhorrent business policy at best and at worst…well…Unacceptable!
Enough of this “Anything for Net Profits Goes…All Bottom Line madness” from these people. This has got to Stop!

wow, they really are bad people who make pet foods but dont care about the pets.
Does anyone know the symptom? I’ve been feeding my little dog Purina indoor dog brand, but I thought he was ok for a while. But I have also been feeding him chewy dog treats, i dont know the name brand but I got it at walmart and they look like little steaks.
Lately hes been throwing up and had diarreah with spots of blood. :s wow, I really feel like an idiot now but when I took him to the vet nothing was wrong so I figured it had something to do with his hair loss.

I feel so sick, worried, & afraid . I keep searching to make sure i don`t poison my babies.I read in our local paper that animals are our personal property, Tere will be no help with the bills to our vets . Further more i worked with a human drug company . Our elderly have to eat dog food - cat food in order to buy their meds. How about when they get sick & die with this.THIS would not be happening if we kept our own factories running in this contry . We are the people of the greatest nation on earth . PLEASE protect us .To me & plenty of other people our pets are family.

Does anyone know about Purina One? I have used it for years on for a dog we have since put down (unrelated) and now have two puppies that eat it. It is all natural but so is arsenic. Any word on it? So far, they are fine. I do have a box of Ol Roy treats. I don’t care if they are not on the list of late. They are headed for the garbage.

What about Purina’s dry food, Beneful? That’s my dog’s food. He also loves Ol Roy Lamb Dog Biscuits. Is corn gluten okay? That’s what Beneful has in it. I know wheat gluten is bad. I’m afraid to buy dog food. I let him eat leftover homemade potato soup yesterday.
April 6th, 2007 at 3:47 am
I have two small dogs that have been on Purina One Lamb and Rice Dry Food forsmall animals and have been giving them olroy 5 flavor dog biscuits for quite some time. My older female is very bloated and having urinary problems. She almost died about three months ago from bleeding gastric problems. She was in intensive care for 1 day which cost was about 650.00 my 2 year old was sick 3 weeks ago and I thought I was going to loose her….Has Purina recalled any of their foods???? Will start making my own food immediately….Yes we should all buy products made in USA…..AMERICA HAS SOLD OUT AND ONLY WE THE PEOPLE CAN STAND UP AND MAKE A CHANGE…WILL WE?? OR DO WE ALL THINK WE ARE ONLY ONE PERSON WHAT CAN WE DO??
April 6th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
I just want to know what the hell to feed my animals! Nothing with gluton? Soy, wheat, corn….ahhh! It’s to the point that I’m scared of ALL pet foods. I have three cats and a dog, and they are my babies-I’m sure you can all sympathize with that! My oldest, a cat, is 18 this month. I’ve had him since I was in the third grade. I’ve been calling his vet pretty much everyday to make sure that his Science Diet is okay. I know that I’m driving the poor man insane, but I really can’t help it. As for my other animals, the cats get Cat Chow and Buddy gets Ol’Roy-wet and dry. I, of course, have stopped feeding him the wet, but now am thinking that I should go get something other than Ol’Roy dry as well. To make matters worse, his damn Ol’Roy treats are recalled now as well! What about his Beggin Strips-can he still have those? The recalls keep changing so fast. What the hell is wrong with pet food manufacturers? I could kick myself in the ass, also, because I eat all kinds of Del Monte foods. I should say that I DID eat their foods, but never again. Wal Mart can kiss my ass as well. Unfortunately, being that I live in an extremely rural area, Wal Mart is the main source for shopping around here. There is one small, family owned grocery store, but other than that I have to drive at least like 35 minutes, but I think it’s worth it.
So, someone tell me, please, your recommendations on cat and dog food-I’d really like to know what truely concerned pet owners are feeding their animals. Thanks!

I recently learned this morning that my dog has been eating Ol’Roy beef sticks. He has not been acting funny, but I threw them away. I am so relieved because I feed them in small, ranged portions. I feel that if he had eaten any more, he would have gotton sick. It pained him to see them throw in the trash because that is what he looks forward to in life (ha). I will no longer buy any Walmart brands. I’m just happy he loves other treats. One suggestion for your dog if thier favorite treat has wheat gluten is Dad’s Treats brand Nut-Tastics which are soft, chewy, and peanut butter flavored with no gluten. Jasper loves them!

PS: I am feeding Jasper Flint River Ranch brand Lamb meal kibble along with Nutro brand Natural Choice Lamb, Duck, amd pasta flavor. I know Natural choice is on the recall list, but the flavor of Lamb, Duck, & Pasta has no gluten. But if you don’t want to take chances, the best food in the world is NRG brand dehydrated mix. Although it is pretty hard to find, my dog absolutely LOVES it and would dig into his bowl, licking it clean. Hope I helped, Amber!

I lost my best friend on Friday. She ate a steady diet of delmonte cat food - which is still not on the list- plus I “Treated” her with Pounce since she was a kitten. She was fine one moment - then gone!!!! I was so happy when the “Lists” came out and none of the food I gave my animals were on them. I now feed them a natural diet only!!!!

Meat recall expands because of illnesses
A Vernon meatpacker expanded its voluntary recall of ground beef that might be contaminated with a deadly strain of E. coli bacteria after several people were reported ill in California and other Western states.
United Food Group said Wednesday that the voluntary recall now applies to an additional 370,000 pounds of ground beef sold in tubes under several brand names, including Moran’s All Natural, Miller Meat Co., Stater Bros., Inter-American Products, and Basha’s.
The company, which originally recalled 75,000 of ground beef this weekend, said in a statement that it expanded the recall “based on concerns raised by the California Department of Health Services.”
Health officials said they have received reports of three illnesses in the state but no deaths. The state agency said that leftover ground beef found in the homes of two ill consumers in California and Colorado was found to contain E. coli O157:H7, which can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration, officials said.
“The very young, seniors and persons with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to food-borne illnesses,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in a statement.
The recalled ground beef, which was sold in 1, 3, 5 and 10-pound tubes, was produced at United Food’s Vernon plant April 13.
The labels of the tube of meat being recalled contain the code “EST. 1241″ inside the USDA mark of inspection or printed on the package. All of the products bear a sell by date of “Apr/29/07″ or “Apr/30/07,” a freeze by date of “Apr/28/07″ or “Apr/30/07″ or a produced-on date of “April 13-07,” the company said.
The meat was available in 11 Western states and was sold through Albertsons, Basha’s, Grocery Outlet, Fry’s, “R” Ranch Markets, Sam’s Club, Save-A-Lot, Save-Mart, Scolari’s Wholesale Markets, Smart & Final, Smith’s, Stater Bros. and Superior Warehouse.
United Food said that the recalled beef should either be thrown away or returned to the store for a refund.
