Rocker’s Cat Forced To Smoke Crack Cocaine

Pete Doherty’s Cat Forced To Smoke Crack Cocaine

A picture of a cat addicted to crack cocaine was leaked by friends of the frontman for the band The Babyshambles. Pete Doherty, who was dating Kate Moss, is said to be regularly getting his cats high on drugs. “They said it PASSES OUT with its paws in the air, suffers MOOD SWINGS and even thinks it can FLY,” according to the description in the UK’s The Sun tabloid. The leaked picture of the cat Dinger — named after a slang term for a syringe — is shown above.

Send Itchmo To SXSW

Filed under: National Dog, Cat & Pet Info, Websites About Cats & Dogs — Ben Huh @ 4:02 am

Give this panel 5 stars and send Itchmo and others to the premier web conference to talk about the pet food recall.

We’re asking for your votes in helping us (and several other pet bloggers) get on a panel at the South by South West conference. SXSW brings together some of the most influential and independent minds on the web. By being a panelist, we hope to bring the web’s attention to the fact that pet blogs are more than just fun and games — it’s life and death.

Our panel is titled Pet Blogging: Not a Fluffy Puppy Story. To help us get on the panel, register on the site and give it 5 stars here.

Introducing Andrew Schrauben

Filed under: National Dog, Cat & Pet Info, Websites About Cats & Dogs — Ben Huh @ 3:00 am

Andrew SchraubenAndrew Schrauben has always had a soft spot for dogs. At the age of 11 he donated years worth of saved allowance money to the Humane Society and served them as a volunteer before he was old enough to drive.

Despite being stricken with adulthood, he and his wife Amanda currently devote much of their time to local pet rescue Vicky’s Pet Connection. Keeping watch over Andrew’s house are his yellow labs Haven and Beacon, who also help teach manners (and mischief) to the foster dogs that spend time in their home.

Andrew, Amanda, Haven and Beacon make their home in western Michigan where all four frequent the river and trails that are just minutes away. Earning a living as an aerospace engineer keeps Andrew indoors quite a bit, but he compensates with a hobby of outdoor running and has raced distances from 5K to 50 miles. Haven and Beacon frequently go running with Andrew and have even joined him in a few races. Given the interest in dogs and running, Andrew and Amanda write two blogs exploring those topics on their sites: Why Dogs? and Why Run?

Andrew, and occasionally Amanda, will write about keeping fit with pets (among other topics) on Itchmo.

Introducing Mary Hufford

Filed under: National Dog, Cat & Pet Info, Websites About Cats & Dogs — Ben Huh @ 3:30 am

Mary HuffordMary Hufford is a freelance journalist with a strong printing and publishing background. She left corporate America nine years ago to be a stay at home mom, and took that opportunity to expand her writing skills. Some of Mary’s experience includes newspaper reporting, biography writing, being published nationally in Pointing Dog Journal. Mary is also a substitute teacher and has returned to university to obtain her teaching license.

Mary spent a few years in the rescue trenches as a foster mom and member of the board of directors for Another Chance for English Setters. She says her deaf foster dogs were her greatest teachers, and learned a great deal about canine interaction and health issues while she was a rescue volunteer. She also learned about training dogs, instead of being trained by the dogs!

Mary, her very tolerant husband Jim, and their two kids live in suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. Jim says Mary is “mother to all.” The Huffords share their home, couches, and available floor space with Grace (a Llewellin Setter), Harvey (a rescued Lab), Abby (a wickedly intelligent weimaraner), Libby (a rescued min-pin-doxie mix), Katie the Psycho-Kitty, and Hammie the guinea pig.

Nancy Freedman-SmithProfessional dog trainer Nancy Freedman-Smith, owner of Gooddogz Training, will be writing on topics of training and behavior. Nancy lives in Portland Maine with three kids, two dogs, and a clicker-savvy rat name Onion, along with a revolving door of visiting dogs that she boards, trains and on occasion, fosters for New England Border Collie Rescue.

She is the author of “A Dog’s Life” a popular blog appearing in MaineToday.com and currently dabbles in Agility, Freestyle, Rally-O, Pet Assisted Therapy, Service Dog Training, and stupid trick training. Most recently she has embarked on training her youngest dog to pull a cart, which has her children quite excited at all the Halloween costume possibilities.

Nancy tells us she is eagerly looking forward to bringing her dogs back to Camp Buster this fall, for her fourth year as Barks ‘n Crafts Director. Money raised by the dogs goes to the Susan L. Curtis foundation, an organization dedicated to sending disadvantaged Maine children to camp. This year she has sworn not to forget the wax ear plugs in hopes of actually getting a little sleep, and just to be sure, she has already tucked them safely in her minivan’s glove compartment. Nancy is committed to positive reinforcement training and only positive training techniques will be addressed in her blogs.

Introducing A New Writer: Deb Dempsey

Filed under: Websites About Cats & Dogs — Ben Huh @ 3:24 am

Dem Dempsey

Deb Dempsey is the co-owner of a successful pet business based in Golden, Colorado. Mouthfuls, Inc. produces a multitude of upscale products for both dogs and cats, including a breath mint for dogs aptly named, “Doggone Fresh Breath Mints”. These products have been sold throughout the nation in small boutiques, catalogs and department stores since 1999.

In addition, Deb and her business partner — and best friend of 20 years — opened a retail boutique in Denver in the spring of 2005. This fulfilled a life-long dream of Deb’s, as she had longed for a store of her own since grade school. Deb has a background in fashion merchandising and put her decorating talent to work when setting up the store.

Within a year, Denver’s lifestyle magazine 5280, dubbed the boutique “Top of the Town – Best Pet Boutique” in Denver. This notoriety helped push her to the forefront of the pet food recall within the Denver area this spring. As she carried none of the foods involved in the recall, media outlets throughout the area flocked to the store and sought comments and advice.

Deb is a regular contributor to Colorado Dog magazine and frequently writes columns for rescue groups’ newsletters around the nation. In addition, you can find her Blog at www.mouthfuls.net.

On a personal level, Deb finds herself surrounded by animals at home too. She currently has four dogs: Martha the Basset, Howie the French Bulldog, Stella the Toy Poodle and Tiffany the Chihuahua-mix (a.k.a. “What is that?”), one kitten (Tatiana the Siberian Forest Cat), two ducks (Dudley and Aflac) and five hens that lay organic eggs for the whole family. She has two sons, Curtis (16) and Travis (13) who regularly pitch in at the store, and an incredibly patient husband named Stan.

Introducing A New Writer: Pat Richard

Filed under: National Dog, Cat & Pet Info, Boston, Websites About Cats & Dogs — Ben Huh @ 3:31 am

Pat RichardPatty Richard is a native of Rhode Island and currently lives on Prudence Island, where she waits anxiously for tourist season to be over, then waits anxiously for hunting season to be over. Although most of her professional life has been geared to printing and publishing, she has a shockingly short attention span and has performed all manner of unrelated tasks ranging from peeling potatoes to monitoring seawater quality parameters for NOAA. Somehow she always ends up back in the publishing business.

She telecommutes to her current job as copy editor and layout artist for “Manufacturers’ Mart”, a regional industrial trade publication. She has written many natural science features and travelogues for local newspapers, and edited a regional recreation guide, “The Sundial” for two years.

In her spare time, she tries unsuccessfully to avoid volunteering for community organizations, including but not limited to the Prudence Conservancy, the Prudence Island Historical & Preservation Society, the Homestead Plat Improvement Association, the Prudence Island Water District and the Friends of Prudence Island School.

Patty refuses to leave the island except to buy cigarettes, which are much cheaper on the mainland. She has always shared her home with pets. Her current pet family consists of two cats: a 20-year-old tiger tabby named Rochester (alias “King of Beasts”) and an adopted feral, approximately 7 years old, named Nermal. She is also the de facto guardian of 6 chickens: Bertha, Gimpy, Big Red, Little Red, Little Blackie and Psycho-Chicken. Her writing for Itchmo will focus largely on geriatric pets.

Patty’s ambition is to win Powerball, buy a small island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and retire into obscurity. She’s already accomplished the obscurity part.

If Cats Ruled The World Contest Winner Is…

With more than 50% of the votes, it’s Marcie Monroe!

Her winning sentence was “If cats ruled the world… oh I forgot, they already do!”

Runner up is Will Chen of wisebread.com with “If cats ruled the world they would delegate the hard work to humans and let us think we ruled the world.”

Congratulations!

Keep coming back for more fun contests.

Mr. Goodell, Please Don’t Ban Michael Vick From Football For Dog Fighting

Filed under: Dogs, National Dog, Cat & Pet Info, News for Cats, Dogs & Owners — Ben Huh @ 5:22 am

Michael Vick in NFL Madden Game

OPINION: You read that right. I don’t want to see Michael Vick banned from football. Why? There’s a cancer thriving among the dark alleys of America, and Vick can help us bring it down. Let me tell you how.

I’m pissed. I’m outraged and I am full of vengeance. But I also want the greatest good to be done — that is the end of dog fighting. Michael Vick is facing two possible choices on his dog fighting charges: 1) Get banned for life from the NFL and go to court to fight the charges, or 2) take the plea bargain deal and cooperate with the government in the hopes that he can return to the NFL and play for millions.

Vick May Take Dog Fighting Plea Deal To Play Football Again

Filed under: Dogs, National Dog, Cat & Pet Info, News for Cats, Dogs & Owners — Ben Huh @ 2:35 pm

NFL Roger GoodellSources close to Michael Vick are reporting that Vick’s decision to take the prosecution’s offer depends on whether or not the NFL will allow him to play again.

Vick is awaiting a decision from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (pictured), who is conducting a separate investigation into whether Vick ran afoul of the league’s conduct policy. If Goodell bans Vick for life for his participation in dog fighting or gambling, Vick is expected to take the case to trial in the hopes that an acquittal will allow him to play in the NFL according to the source.

The source also says if Vick is not handed a lifetime ban, Vick may take the plea deal in the hopes of a lenient sentence.

Two more of his co-defendants are expected to plead guilty in exchange for more lenient sentences.

Introducing Two Product Review Sites For Cats And Dogs

Dog and a cat snuggle up

We would like to introduce two new product review sites in the Itchmo Pets Network:

As their names suggest, the sites are filled with great reviews for dog and cat products. Unlike other review sites, it’s not just one person’s opinion. We’ve scoured the web for the best written user reviews and product information for a wide range of products for dogs and cats. Each product review contains a variety of different perspectives and criticisms (if they exist) to give you an accurate picture of what the pet parent community thinks.

We will continue to add more reviews to the list of products and we hope to see your reviews as well. If you’d like to see your product reviewed, contact us at itchmotips@gmail.com.

Enjoy!

P.S. Thank you to our beta testers in the ItchmoForums.
