Baby Seal Walks Mile To Animal Shelter
A five-month-old Northern fur seal waddled about a mile from the Pacific Ocean and found himself at the Tracy Animal Shelter, about 60 miles east of Sacramento.
Workers at the shelter saw the seal flopping toward them on the asphalt. They were in disbelief of seeing the 18-pound seal headed for the shelter.
Animal control officers caught the seal with a catch-pole and put him in their truck and waited for workers from the Marine Mammal Center to arrive. The seal is now at the center and has been examined.
A spokesman for the Marine Mammal Center said the seal may have strayed while he was looking for food.
Veterinarians said that the seal is malnourished and underweight, but he is on the road to recovery because he is already swimming and eating. The seal will be nursed back to health and will be then released.

AWWW ~ what a cutie. I’m glad he found the people who could help him! BUT what about the people who saw him and did nothing? That mile must have seemed like a million to the little guy. Glad he’s now safe and on his way home.

A mile is a very long ways for him to crawl! Let’s hope everyone involved has the wisdom to give him good care.

Another poor defensless baby looking for help and protection. What a miracle that the right people found him in time. Poor little feller looks like he was at the end of the trail.

Bless his heart! He knew where to go. What a wonderful story, after so many bad ones lately. People may have left him alone on his trek because it is, I believe, a federal crime to bother, mess with or harass marine mammals. If you find an injured one, you’re supposed to call the authorities, not try to help it yourself.

The outcome is good and that’s what counts here.
Meanwhile, news turns ugly again. Check this site out:

Something is fishy about this story. The geography doesn’t add up. I think he was dumped… TRACY IS WAY, WAY INLAND, CLOSER TO I-5 THAN THE PACIFIC OCEAN. It is NOT a mile from the pacific Ocean, here go check it out yourselves… 370 Arbor Road, Tracy, CA. It should be a crime to dump a baby seal. If he wasn’t dumped then he likely fell off a truck.

LOL with people getting in trouble for picking up animals they think are in trouble he could have been dumped by some unsuspecting individual who googled helping seals and saw you could get in trouble……I am all for protecting wildlife but now some people are scared to help…..if he did walk all that way some people probably just let him go on his own not wanting to get a fine. I may be wrong just my humble opinion.
