Bank Using Pet Events To Lure In More Customers

Usually when you get something in the mail about opening a new bank account, the bank tries to entice you with free money or a free microwave. But now, one bank is tugging at the heartstrings of pet owners and tailoring their incentives towards cat and dog lovers.

Huntington National Bank, with branches in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky and West Virginia, has begun a marketing campaign aimed at pet owners to get new customers.

The bank has held “Yappy Hours” events, so pets and pet owners can mingle. During these events, pets can get free vaccinations or microchip implants. There are even free pet portraits by local artists.

Their events in Cleveland and Indianapolis have attracted over 1,000 people and have led to 150 new accounts for the bank.

“We’re trying to make an emotional connection to things people love,” said Kim Ravenda, Huntington’s chief marketing officer. “People have such strong ties to their pets.”

A spokesperson for a local humane society said that the bank is using an effective marketing strategy because pets are members of our families. People will be drawn to and give their business to pet-friendly companies.

Does this mean pets can start opening up checking accounts now? Do they qualify to get a free microwave?

Our bank allows dogs inside so that’s one reason we bank there.

Great idea! Who knows, maybe someone could suggest that they also invite some local shelters to participate in their Yappy Hours.

My cats wouldn’t like this event - too many D-O-G-S, but they would probably like to apply for their own Visa cards. Wonder if they would allow cats to bank on line?

I hope that’s not a MILK-BONE, that puppy has in his mouth.

Miss Manners needs to tell this bank that it’s rude to talk about a party if the whole class isn’t invited…

You see, it would be illegal for me to take my dog to “Yappy Hours” events in Cleveland, Ohio*. Why? Because she’s an American Pit Bull Terrier, and there are strict breed-specific laws in Cleveland (and other Ohio cities/towns), in addition to the state’s laws pertaining to “pit bulls”.

    *I don’t live in Ohio.
