Dimmitrol (Diethylcarbamazine) is the daily heartworm medication for dogs. Not to be used by collies and some shepherds (dogs that are sensitive to Ivermectin) because of the brain barrier issue.

Regarding the use of moxidectin in a chihuahua, I am afraid to use it on my chihuahua's.

Perhaps I've missed something, but since when did the FDA have anything to do with topical flea treatments such as Advantage? I thought this was the EPA's territory? This is what was indicated to me last year when I contacted both these agencies about Advantage and Frontline.

There is an old medicine that they used to give every day. I'm not sure of the name though right now. I found out about it while looking up alternatives for my chihuahua. I can't find the info again now sorry, I'm not even sure at this point that that info was correct (after I tried to find it again). I don't give her any heartworm meds now because I think the risk and loss of quality of life of the drug (not eating for 1 week out of every month and not moving much) out weigh the risk of heartworms for her. But I do tell people about her experiences with the drug (and she had taken the correct dose for her size).

I have a chihuahua that was on Revolution a few years back. By the time I stopped using it, I was noticing symptoms of her not wanting to move and hiding for a few days after application. About a year ago I put her on Heartgard and noticed the same symptoms (actually they were worse on the Heartgard, lasted about a week and included anorexia too). This is not a product I'd try on her at any cost. Revolution does have these types of side effects for anyone wondering (Revolution is a synthetic form of avermectin). I had a hard time at first finding out the potential side effects of both Revolution and Heartgard. There are vets and other people out there who say the safest heartworm meds are the dailies.

The FDA actually did something? If they have the authority to do something about advertising claims why don"t they do something about the pet food companys and advertising?

The pet food companys show healthy looking food on the labels such as a chicken that looks like it is ready to be placed in the oven and cooked for dinner. When you look in the container you see hair, white shiny objects, and if you place amagnet over the food pieces stick to the magnet now why would anything in pet food stick to a magnet?

Perhaps the pet food companys should have to show on the label what they are allowed to have in the pet foods feathers, etc.

When you call a company and ask them what part of a chicken or lamb they use and they reply everything they use is fit for human consumption. Why does the bag contain feathers or pieces of sheeps hair? Perhaps the FDA should look into the false advertising of the pet food companys.

How many people would buy a package of pet food that showed the ingredients that are really in pet foods feathers, hair, and all the horrible chemicals?

I wonder if Pfizer's Revolution (selamectin) for cats also has a similar litany of counter indications, warnings, possible adverse conditions, etc. Revolution looks like it competes with Advantage Multi from what I can tell. We got one from the vet recently and I've been delaying treatment with it until I check it out.

Thanks for the letter, it was informative.
