These people — these kids, the man making his cat smoke crack, Vick, the dog fighters — all of them — need to be put on chain gangs, and their labor for the rest of their lives needs to be used to raise money to help animals. They should be forced to do hard labor for the rest of their lives and all the earnings from their labor should be given to animal charities and rescues.

I am heart sick for the poor helpless, animals, and agree with all of the comments, but rather than just talk about it, we should do something about it. I propose setting up a reward fund.

Perhaps if enough money is raised, it will cause someone to turn these monsters in, and the abuse will stop. I don’t want to see one more animal to suffer.

OK, as a recently retired public school teacher, I can tell you about the parents who defend their children even when their children are clearly in the wrong. (If that other kid hadn’t provoked my kid, my kid never would have punched him!) There are also parents who are doing a heck of a good job parenting their children, but they seem to be decreasing. Seems as though too many are now parenting out of guilt ~ since the parents are so involved with their own lives they show their love by buying their kids anything they want and letting them do whatever they want to do. What’s wrong with saying NO?
The schools are limited as to the amount/kind of discipline they can mete out. In addition, with No Child Left Behind and the frenzy of testing kids, supports such as social workers and school nurses are being eliminated. And you know what’s happening to funds for community mental health and law enforcement . . .
The courts need to step in and do a better job of sentencing offenders. The legislatures need to step in and pass laws to make this kind of behavior unacceptable. The schools need to toughen up their standards and let parents know that they will no longer overlook violent student behavior. The parents need to step up and do some parenting. And I hope that society will let the rest of the “powers that be” know that we will no longer tolerate a world where abuse and violence toward any living being is acceptable.

This country has gone to hell in a handbasket. Where are the parents? Where are the schools? Where is law enforcement? I have never seen so many adults fail to be responsible or held accountable for their own behavior and that of their kids. Everyone seems to think they are entitled to do whatever they want and have whatever they want without working for it, without paying for it. It’s creating a generation were animals and children are abused without anyone even getting up in arms about it. This kind of attitude is going to get us all killed. Case in point - the military flew from Montana to Louisiana last week with six nuclear warheads on the plane. One of these kids who never learned anything forgot to remove the nuclear bombs before the plane took off. I’m sure the govt response was a slap on the hand. Wake up and smell the coffee.

As I understand it, in this particular case they believe it’s caused by young kids - an initiation of sorts. Nonetheless, I am all for Vick making a public broadcast to tell kids to knock it off.

I wish judges everywhere would crack down on these kids. To boot, they ought to fine and incarcerate the parents for having no control over the kids.

Parents in the last 30 years have done nothing except create generations of self-centered, egotistical, discourteous brats with zero values. We’ve got a country filled with monsters and the way I see it, someone had better get wise and start throwing the book at these people [kids and parents alike].

I suspect this has something to do with gangs making a statement about Michael Vick’s case. Since Mr. Vick is so contrite, why not get him to make a public service video to be shown on Atlanta area TV, telling the guilty parties to knock it off?

3FURS - I have to disagree with you - I don’t think that parents are afraid of disciplining their kids, I think they are 1) so wrapped up in their own dramas that they don’t pay attention to what their kids are doing and 2) they don’t want to damage their little darlings’ self esteem.

I watched a father fiddle with his cell phone on a train platform while his preschooler wandered closer and closer to the edge. I finally said “sir you might want to keep an eye on your kid there.” First he glared at me (Oh I’m sooooo sorry I interrupted your instant messengering) then he seemed to realize that he didn’t see his kid. A momentary look of panic crossed his face and then he grabbed the kid and let into him.

I didn’t say this but I wanted to: Mr. you’re the one who should be yelled at. Your son is 3 or 4 years old, its your responsibility to keep him safe.
