Call Your Representative. Make Change Happen

The House Committee on Energy and Commerce is having another hearing on the FDA’s ability to safeguard the US food supply. We appreciate the hearings and the opportunity for them to ask hard questions. We’ll post Webcast links when available.

Just remember. Government won’t change unless you participate.

Diminished Capacity: Can the FDA Assure the Safety and Security of the Nation’s Food Supply?
Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations
9:30 a.m. in room 2123 Rayburn House Office Building

The witness list is not published yet.

Hey Canadians!

We’re not the only ones who need to make change happen. Your CFIA is taking a similar approach to screening as the FDA, which makes it harder to detect new problems.

This message was sent to Representative John Shadegg (Republican AZ-3rd District) on May 6 -
At the very least I would hope you could be non-partisan about food safety and support efforts to do something about the lax oversight and possible criminal actions related to the pet food recalls and human food contaminations of recent months and likely years. Be brave, support HR 2108 with fellow members in the House Committee on Energy & Commerce. This isn’t “just” a pet-food problem, but rather that the recall and subsequent discovery of adulterated ingredients in the human food chain have exposed both a public-health risk and a national security concern, as well. Thank you, PS Do not add me to any mailing lists.

Okay, I was not sweet, but I have not received any response, he is too busy supporting the Iraq war. The bill referenced is Human and Pet Food Safety Act of 2007, in the House HR 2108 and in the Senate S1274 (Sen Durbin), see http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/.....:H.R.2108: for the text.

    Breaking News–More Food Recalls–

ST. CHARLES, Mo., May 11 /PRNewswire/ — Royal Canin USA is announcing today the voluntary nationwide recall of eight Sensible Choice dry dog food products and seven Kasco dry dog and cat food products.

This announcement is based on the company’s ongoing extensive review of its manufacturing and quality assurance testing procedures, which identified trace amounts of a melamine derivative from tainted Chinese rice protein concentrate provided to the company by domestic ingredient supplier Cereal Byproducts, headquartered in Illinois.

The following eight Sensible Choice dry dog food products and seven Kasco dry dog and cat food products with date codes between July 28, 2006 to April 30, 2007 are being voluntarily recalled:

  6. Eric says:

More recalls? What a shocker! You’d really think they’d be able to get these things out before many of us are getting ready for bed.

  8. Jenny says:

I had emailed Orijen a while back and it took about three weeks to get a response. Their response was very apologetic for the delay.

  9. xyz says:

Gail B., thanks for the list.

Someone brought this up here or elsewhere. Sen’s Clinton and Obama aren’t speaking out on ths issue of food safety. At least as far as I know. It’s something of a given the current administration isn’t going to openly jump on this bandwagon, but why the overall silence from the opposing party?

Just a guess- it’s either because one of them is going to inherit the problem, or, it’s too early in the game to make it an issue. There isn’t any clear front runner yet . Food safety is a delicate issue. Trade is a delicate issue. Whoever casts the first stone will have to have their ducks lined up and some kind of ‘fix it” strategy in order to gain advantage.

If this becomes the proverbial political football, more power to them.
It will serve to bring the issue to light. I’m not comforted by the general apathy shown but thank you to those eeking out better policy.

  10. Haze says:

This is a real problem. Just think of what could happen to humans. Our American food companies out sourcing to foreign companies ie Hershey.

I for one will not buy food stuff made in another country.
