Thanks for posting this further information. It is good to know that this kitty was not abandoned and she is back with her family. It sounds like the family really loves Babygirl. Hope she lives a long, happy life.

I thought I would post the actual information in here after reading all of the comments. Babygirl got out of the house at the end of November when my family was leaving for work and school. When we got home that night and noticed her missing we went and searched for her. We also contacted the vet clinic on post, the pound in Fairbanks and the MP’s office regarding her missing. So it is not like we left her out in the cold to die. She is the beloved family cat that we have had for almost 6 years. During the first couple of weeks that she was missing we kept in contact with the pound and vets office to see if she had shown up. After finding no good news we figured either something horrible had happened or another family found her. When we seen her on the front page of the newspaper I contacted them right away to see if it was her and sure enough it was. Friday evening we were reunited with her and she has been happy ever since. She underwent her last surgery today and is still recovering but Dr. Olsen said she should make a full recovery. And yes my family is helping with the her medical expenses. Like I said this is our beloved family kitty and we would never do anything to hurt her. My son actually cried for a long time after she went missing and was in tears when he finally was able to see her again!!!!!

i really dont think lack of this limb or that limb or not having a tail has a thing to do with quality of life for cats and dogs. i pretty much know if a part of my cat hurts if she growls when i touch it if there’s no obvious physical indication of a wound or problem. i have seen plenty of partially limbless cats and dogs leading happy pretty normal lives so you’d hardly know a paw was missing. i dont think they should be ‘ put down’ if they can find that sort of contentment. if theyre hurt they dont try to play and eat- particularly cats. my cats have always some how made it known when it was time for them to go- i think its quite apparent if you allow yourself to be open to the signs. i have never once been wrong on knowing when they were ill and knowing the day they were going to die.

human beings lead perfectly meaningful lives with no limbs, blind ,deaf etc. we saw those marvelous chihuahuas born so horribly deformed wiggling around like normal contented fun filled ‘ normal’ pups. on seeing that who can deny them their lives and their wee little go carts? bless those who take the chance to help the most unwanted and needy of all.

there was further no way i wasnt going to try life saving measures when one of my cats developed potentially deadly renal failure. when it became obvious, after initial treatment, that her life would be intolerble and not sustainable i had her euthanized. still- no way in hell i wasnt gonna try because she did have a chance- they cant judge the effect of the failure until after initial treatment allows them to ascertain the remaining function. it’s my money - i’ll spend it on who i wish no matter how much of a waste anyone else thinks it is. i’m not going to deny them but i’m also not going to allow them to live in pain. each situation is unique- you cant make sweeping statements about the worth, the right and wrong of these decisions.

it’s particularly egregious to toss a long haired cat out on its own. the long furred breeds that need constant grooming( persians , himmies) are meant for indoors. matted fur can render them unable to walk, cause skin diseases and even make them unable to defecate properly and we know how they are about their cleanliness-being mired in filth they can do nothing about launches them into severe depression and despair. i now have a new persian tortie girl who was found in a feral colony- even though she’s clearly not a feral. i am still patiently combing and shaving her mats out. she’s the most loving creature. i seriously want to kick the ass of whomever thought throwing her out in a feral colony was a swift idea… at least she has her claws. people actual toss out pure breed persians and other cats theyve had declawed-rendering them defenseless and particularly unfit for outdoor survival. it’s as much as a death sentence as taking them to the kill shelter. people are stupid.

Also, any good vet will tell you that it is fantastically difficult to tell if a cat is in pain. As one of the smaller predators, hiding the fact they are ill or injured is a survival mechanism.

Between the two, I sometimes wonder if heroic measures to save a cat’s life is the most compassionate choice after severe injuries that permantly affect quaility of life. I don’t know.

I do know these kind of stories are heartbreakingly familiar to to shelters and those that do rescue work. This poor cat could be the poster child for why it’s not okay to abandon cats whenever someone gets tired of it.

The sad part is I suspect most cats that are abandoned are abandoned because the owners believe they’re saving it from a shelter. Every person that thinks it’s okay to abandon a pet should read a few hundred of these kind of stories to understand just how cruel it really is.

I hope she finds the right forever home and gets showered with love and attention!

I also hope the person who dumped her in the first place sees this story and feels like a giant a**!

I looked at the original story and this happened in Anchorage. No wonder she got frostbite. And she was declawed and friendly, so she was someone’s pet. I agree with Merlin Marshall: A pox on the person who did this.
