Mittens Says: "nothing however smells viler than a grease trap in a restaurant that hasn’t been cleaned in awhile. the smell will knock you out. they only come and clean it at night when no customers are around. it’s the waste from food that’s sat and moldered that reeks-not food that is not bad being cooked."

And thats the grease thats recycled at the rendering plants and probably back into pet food somewhere along the way. (IMO)

there's a stretch of highway here near a general foods plant that ALWAYS smells of rancid meat. they do not make pet food. i have heard 2 stories that try to explain this smell- one is that it IS the plant . the other is that there was a meat rendering plant there and a hide tannery in the 1920s or earlier and that this pungent scent comes from the locations of these long gone manufacturers.

it's lovingly called ' that Woburn smell'. it's quite strong especially in the summer.

i lived near a Necco wafer plant and it always smelled yummy sweet. nothing however smells viler than a grease trap in a restaurant that hasn't been cleaned in awhile. the smell will knock you out. they only come and clean it at night when no customers are around. it's the waste from food that's sat and moldered that reeks-not food that is not bad being cooked.

If this place, American Nutrition, cooking odors stink to high heaven how much worse are the other pet food mfrs smells? The reason people do not know unless they belong to this forum or other sites (you need a computer for that) about the pet food tsunami is the media is all about spin, cover-up and spin more. As a few have said 'stop feeding this garbage' already. Do your own cooking and stop the slow death of any animal from this garbage, septic tank, sewage food.

How many of you have driven by places where human food's being produced? Sometimes the aromas from them can make you hungry even if you thought you weren't before. Used to know someone who lived near one of the Nabisco bakeries and you could smell chocolate all over the neighborhood when they were making Oreos. There's also a lovely scent in the air if you go by any of the Campbell's plants when they're cooking soup.

Why is their a stink in the air when supposely wholesome pet food is being made, unless it's due to the ingredients being put into it?

Purringfur - I couldn't have said it any better. The PFI hasn't done a thing to improve the quality of pet food.

I wish there was a MASS boycott of commercial pet food. These folks are still in business because people don't have time or money to make needed changes OR they don't know any better. You'd be surprised how many pet owners do NOT know about Itchmo and/or the extent of the pet food debacle...That's what companies like AN, MF, and Walmart are banking on....

Sort of makes you wonder exactly what they're cooking up in there.....although I'd really prefer not to go there.......yuk.

purringfur:

"If pet food plants are cooking fresh nutritious meats, grains, vegetables, and fruits, they should smell like grandma’s kitchen, not grandma’s septic tank."

My sentiments exactly......that is just toooooooo gross!

What? The neighbours don't like the smell of roast beef, sweet potatoes and carrots, and a nice apple pie for dessert?

Don't all pet dinners look like the pictures on the cans and bags?

That's why so much kibble has to be sprayed with animal grease... oh, excuse me, a "palate enhancer."

Exactly! I'm sure people wouldn't want to eat anything that was prepared with smells like that coming from American Nutrition. If food doesn't get past the nose, then it doesn't get past the stomach of both me and my dogs.

Well said, Nora, I couldn't agree more. I'm sure American Nutrition will put some spin on how it doesn't affect air quality.

Hmmm.....the smell of garbage a.k.a. pet food.

If they weren't preparing garbage to feed your pets, the smells would be good smells coming from the factory and it would not smell like rancid and putrid meat waste products and chemicals. How clear can it be?
