"The 500 page bill, H.R. 3580, mostly detailed human drug and medical device changes, but there were also major provisions for ensuring the safety of pet food and establishing an early warning and surveillance system to identify adulteration of the pet food supply."

----------------------------------------------------------------

Who can possibly plow through this bloated bill? Imagine the huge proclivity once again for megacorps to find loopholes.

The simpler the better.

1. Corporations - yea shall report all toxic and potentially dangerous products to the proper agency. PSA, FDA, USDA, etc. Period. Or face mandatory fines of millions. Face blocking of importing and exporting your products.

2. Yea shall NOT sell for import or export genetically altered seeds or meats or face millions in fines...

3. xxxxxx

You get the idea...

Biotech Corn Blocked in EU

Agricultural commissioners deadlocked, now the EU's Executive Commission must vote - approval expected in coming weeks

http://www.seedtoday.com/articles/Biotech_Corn_Blocked_in_EU_-48840.html

Let's not forget ConAgra who has 10 plants in China.

This makes one wonder:

...
"Two of the GM crops were jointly developed and marketed by U.S. companies Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc., a division of Dupont Co., and Mycogen Seeds..."

(Mycogen - Monsanto's garden seeds) These seeds are produced in India - noted for it's toxicity. Dupont of course another chemical company. Together these mega corps have a monopoly on seed supplies.

"...Their maize products are designed to resist insects like the corn rootworm and be tolerant to herbicides. The third maize product, developed by U.S. biotech firm Monsanto Co. (nyse: MON - news - people ), is also insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant.

All three products are meant to be used in food and animal feed production but not used for cultivation in the EU.

The European Commission has been trying to get all EU governments on side to open up the EU market to more biotech crops, something the United States, Canada and others have demanded.

The EU ended a six-year moratorium on accepting applications for new biotech products in May 2004, introducing strict approval procedures and labeling regulations, but several EU nations remain reluctant to authorize biotech crops because of public health and environmental concerns..."

GE seeds kill bees worldwide. No bees, no pollination no food. GE seeds soak up poisons and produce crops with toxins. Money talks. Poisons flow into the human and pet food supplies.

Katie and Don are correct. Note the sentences I have repeated from Katie and Don's Posts. For some reason my comments were omitted. Perhaps my post too lengthy.

There is no will from the Congress, the President, and the Agencies (FDA, USDA, FTC) to follow through with legislation passed.

Is this legislation too verbose as to create loopholes?
What can the huge conglomerate rich corporations do to circumvent the laws?

See who contributes to Congress and the Administration by the millions. "Global" Mega Corporations such as Monsanto, Nestle, and ConAgra by going to:

http://safefoods.wetpaint.com/page/Government

To access each (Senate) Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee Member's PAC (rich lobbys) receipts. You will find contributions for instance from Monsanto on both sides of the aisle.

Lobbies buy influence in the House of Representatives, the Presidential and Administrative agencies as well as the Senate. They also buy loyalty from Senate, House, and Presidential Candidates.

(Make sure you check each Senator's PAC Contributions 2006 Campaign Funds)

mittens,

The Federal Food, Drugs and Cosmetics Act:

http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode21/usc_sup_01_21_10_9.html

Now, you say they don't have enough funding? Do you have any foggy notion how much money $2 billion dollars is?

At the current median income in the U.S., it's enough to hire 50,000 employees.

The media will tell you the FDA doesn't have the resources to inspect 9,000,000 imports a year. With 50,000 employees, that would work out to one inspection every two days. If you had employees able to inspect one shipment per hour, it would take 3000 employees instead of 50,000.

Did you know selling adulterated food is worth a year in prison? Did you know FDA agents have full police powers of arrest?

How many CEOs do you think you'd have to throw in prison before corporate America got the message that it's not okay to sell poisoned food?

The laws on the books aren't great, but they'd still get the job done if they were enforced. Pull up the next Itchmo article in this section where the company mixing unapproved substances in animal feed, that was making the animal feed without a license, got a warning from the FDA - SIX MONTHS AFTER IT WAS FIRST REPORTED IN THE MEDIA.

Scratch your head and think about how long it takes a person who robs a 7/11 to be indicted and sent to jail. Does it take six months? Or more like 24 hours or less? Do the police give out warnings? Or do the toss the robber in jail? Does it take $2 billion to catch the average criminal? Or more like a couple of days pay for a few policemen, a prosecuting attorney and a judge?

Plug in that round thing above your neck and think about some of these odd theories you've been led to believe.

The laws are there. The money's there.

The will to get the job done is not.

The Federal Food, Drugs and Cosmetics Act:

http://www4.law.cornell.edu/us....._10_9.html

Now, you say they don’t have enough funding? Do you have any foggy notion how much money $2 billion dollars is?

At the current median income in the U.S., it’s enough to hire 50,000 employees.

The media will tell you the FDA doesn’t have the resources to inspect 9,000,000 imports a year. With 50,000 employees, that would work out to one inspection every two days. If you had employees able to inspect one shipment per hour, it would take 3000 employees instead of 50,000.

Did you know selling adulterated food is worth a year in prison? Did you know FDA agents have full police powers of arrest?

How many CEOs do you think you’d have to throw in prison before corporate America got the message that it’s not okay to sell poisoned food?

>>congress gets enamored of its own sweet self passing feel good bills like these that they then quietly REFUSE TO APPROPRIATE FUNDS FOR.( only congress can fund these things so we can stop carping about the president) if they later ignore or refuse to finance a bill it’s worthless.>>

>>Everyone knows they march to the drum of big corporations. But who will oversee them? certainly not the White House or the Senate or the Congress.>Everyone knows they (FDA) march to the drum of big corporations.
Don,

You are absolutely right. I don't think Senator Durbin or the rest understand - throwing more money to a government agency that is incabable or unwiling to implement the rules makes no sense. They are unwiling to do their jobs now; why give them more? Everyone knows they march to the drum of big corporations. But who will oversee them? certainly not the White House or the Senate or the Congress.

congress gets enamored of it's own sweet self passing feel good bills like these that they then quietly REFUSE TO APPROPRIATE FUNDS FOR.( only congress can fund these things so we can stop carping about the president) if they later ignore or refuse to finance a bill it's worthless. the entire history of the FDA is this exactly in a nut shell- pass a few piddly regulations loudly then don't fund them so they never happen. they need to REFORM the FDA. period. they actually do need more regulations-( the food and drugs act absolutely DOES NOT give the fda all the authority it needs- something you'll notice if you read it and all the regulations associated with it passed since the late 30s). there are hardly any that are enforced but that means more money and they are loathe to give more money to the FDA as it generally doles out that money in raises to it's do nothing upper staff.

reform. issue pink slips. get business concerns out of the organization. then strengthen the laws vis a vis protecting the consumer.the FDA can't or refuses to handle what's on it's plate now. they need to overhaul it .it is broken and more ' laws' aren't going to make it work any better.

The problem is the FDA doesn't enforce the rules that are already on the books. The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act gives the FDA all the authority it needs to keep food and drugs safe. The FDA has a whopping $2 billion a year budget.

There is a laundry list of criminal offenses related to adulterated food and drugs that is NEVER enforced. Consumers notify the FDA of problems, but no FDA action takes place. Names aren't named and investigations go no where.

We don't need more rules. We need more oversight!
