An Indianapolis couple is facing misdemeanor charges of animal neglect when a police officer saw their dog panting and barking in the cab of their pickup truck. The officer said that the couple left the Chihuahua in the car for more than 15 minutes in 87 degree temperature.
When the couple returned to the car, the police officer gave them a court summons but allowed them to take the dog home with them.
The couple appears before a judge to answer the charges and they could face a maximum penalty of 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
More on the case after the jump.
The couple said that they only left their dog in their car for only 10 minutes and that they parked in the shade and left two cups of water for their dog, Reese, to drink.
Winfield and Williams insist that Reese was never in danger. Winfield said she does not regret leaving her dog in the vehicle and said she does not understand why the police made a big deal out of a minor incident.
“I love her to death. That’s my baby. I love taking her places with me,†Winfield said. “I really just don’t understand.”
