Del Monte Corp. announced that it plans to spend $26 million to construct a distribution center next to its pet food plant in North Topeka, Kansas.
The 427,000-square-foot distribution center will serve pet food manufacturing operations in Topeka, Lawrence, Buffalo, NY, Bloomsburg, PA, and Decatur, AL.
The Topeka plant produces various products including Meow Mix, 9Lives, Meaty Bone, Snausages dog snacks, Nature’s Recipe dog food and Pounce cat treats.
Construction will begin on the center in spring and should be completed in about 10 to 12 months.
Chris Koerber, Del Monte plant manager in Topeka, said pet food sales for Del Monte have been increasing about 10 percent a year. He added that Del Monte is always introducing new products.
In other pet food industry related news, Purina will also be expanding. Their Flagstaff, Arizona pet food plant will go through a 91,000 square foot warehouse expansion that will begin in January.
The plant manager said production will increase by 20% after the expansion and the facility will better serve customers in Western states and meet added demand.
