Dog Adopts Four Baby Squirrels
This Chihuahua has a thing for squirrels.
Ten-year-old Mimi, a Chihuahua, has become a mother to four baby squirrels. She took in the motherless squirrels, three females and one male, as if they were her own puppies.
Derek Varnes found the squirrels’ nest last week on a broken limb.
“I didn’t know what to think. They looked like rats at first,” Varnes said. “I wasn’t going to leave them. They say after they’re out of the nest or the tree, the momma won’t mess with them anymore. I wasn’t going to let them die.”
Varnes gave the squirrels to his fiancee’s mother, Jeanette Young, and she took them in. She said that Mimi would watch her with the squirrels and start whining. At first, she thought the dog wanted to eat the squirrels.
But when Young finally put down the squirrels, the curious Chihuahua started to lick the baby squirrels and began to nurse them.
Mimi had a litter of puppies four years ago, but she is still able to produce enough milk to nurse the squirrels. She doesn’t leave her little babies alone.
“She don’t like for me to touch them either,” Young said. She also said Mimi is a much better mom this time around.
“She seems much calmer; she seems like it was just meant for her to have them and take care of them,” Young said.

We, the so called “most intelligent species in the animal kingdom”, should learn unconditional love from our “second class citizens”/”properties”!
