Gosh, I wish the article had more info as to who the vet was and from what state they are located.

ITCHMO ADMIN: Samson and the vet that performed the surgery are from the UK. The vet's name is Noel Fitzpatrick.

Amazing! Our surgeon wanted to attempt to "build" some prosthetic paw in 2001 for Sophie, my female Bichon, who had a cancerous tumor on the front foot pad. The other choice was to amputate at the hip, he thought she would chew on a stump since she is a difficult patient.

We choose to wait and see since she was in no pain or discomfort, she wears a sock or boot in winter and is now 16.

Wow. Amazing! I hope we see more about this as Storm heals up. I'm very interested to see how he does with it.

I find this very interesting because I have a 7-month-old kitten whose right front paw was amputated when he was about six weeks old; I adopted him shortly thereafter. He seems to not miss the paw at all, except for a hopping gait when he walks, since the leg is a little too short for him to walk on.

In looking at my own kitten and how he's so easily adapted to his missing paw, I'm sort of wondering how a prosthetic paw would really improve the quality of life of a pet. Certainly my little guy would have more difficulty catching prey with a missing paw, but as a pampered house cat, he doesn't need to worry about that!

Thanks Itchmo, very interesting story. Will be interesting to see how it works in humans. The flange looks similar to what I thought I saw a runner wearing in a race recently (he was an amputee - both legs -) he won the race and is hoping the Olympic Committee will vote to allow him to compete in next years games. I wonder if it is the same apparatus or similar..
