I think we have the power of embargo. We have the power to boycott the Olympics. We continue to claim powerlessness...imports from China that may or may not be poisonous shoved down our throats by businessmen in this country who will not stop their own greed at the expense of our safety. The power to effect change in China will have to come through boycott by individuals. Our politicians will favor the big business every time. Sooner or later the cheap, poisoned, merchandise will sit in the harbors; may this be sooner, rather than later! If enough of us boycott the Olympics (and all Chinese products), then it will not be making any money...rather it will be exposing up close the pollution and gross human rights violations outside the range of the Media attention span. Maybe if we look at stories such as this we can better understand that poisoning 7000 of our beloved pets doesn't register with them. Hell, they probably don't even know...they have been censored and protected from the consequences.

There are many stories of bravery from China in the Epoch-times web site. You can read "Escapee Reveals Illegal Appellant Prison in Beijing" in their China News section

http://en.epochtimes.com/news/7-12-25/63239.html

http://en.epochtimes.com/123,92,,1.html

What would be a simple lawsuit here can get you kidnapped, beaten up, fired, imprisoned or disappeared with no recourse.

I am so hopeful about pet ownership in China because I believe that pet ownership is a way to create compassion for these animals. The compassion is in everyone's heart but by keeping people from getting acquainted with the sweet side of these animals it makes them commodities instead of personalities.

This article shows the heart is there along with courage

We don't get to see the courage of the common Chinese in our news but web sites like the one above have many stories

Our government has less than zero influence. However there is a great explosion of Christianity in China and their own government admits to 20 million Christians but underground churches may make the number 60 million.

Tiananmen Square showed the hunger for liberty. I keep praying for the sake of all. The pets have a champion!

This is so sad.
1. Sad that they're killing dogs because they feel they can't control rabies any other way.
2. Sad that they're restricting dog owners to arbitrary rules of only one dog and only dogs under a certain height. And...
3. Sad that they're censoring public discussion about these policies.

In the US, we've controlled rabies by educating the public about the need for rabies vaccines, requiring the vaccines by law, destroying animals with rabies, confining animals that may have rabies, and so on. It's a shame the Chinese government thinks they must destroy all dogs in order to control rabies. From what I've heard, they won't even spare dogs who have already been vaccinated. And they're killing them inhumanely right in front of their owners. It's horrible.

It's completely arbitrary because statistically, small dogs bite more often than large dogs. The larger dogs might do more damage with their bites, but they don't bite as frequently. And both small and large dogs can contract rabies and be vaccinated against rabies. It's completely arbitrary.

And the censorship issue just makes it all the more horrible. Criticism is good for government and society. Criticism fosters growth and change. Criticism is a necessary part of a free society.

It's all just so sad.

What can we do about it?
