Dog Shoots Owner In Back

King George

Nope, this is not a tabloid headline. This really did happen.

King George, a 150 pound Great Dane, accidentally shot his owner in the back at his Memphis, Tennessee home. The owner, his fiancee, her brother, and this 22-month-old dog were in the living room all together when the incident happened.

The owner’s fiancee said that King George gets really excited and that night was no different. She said that there was a .22-caliber pistol on the end table. While this Great Dane became excited, his long, hard tail knocked the pistol off of the table. The gun went off, hitting his owner in the back.

The man was rushed to the hospital and currently is in stable condition and is recovering.

“I knew he was smart, I didn’t think he was that smart,” the victim’s fiancee said. “He was always protective. I didn’t think he would be like that.”

She also added that King George is known for his charm and playfulness. The woman said that King George is her baby and is the sweetest dog in the world.

The fiancee said that after the shooting, King George backed up in the corner and had a look of “did I do something that I wasn’t supposed to do” on his face.

Police refused to name the victim as they do not plan to file charges in the shooting, which they’ve ruled as accidental. The man had the gun as protection and was licensed to carry it.

Memphis Police Department said that they have never heard of an incident of a dog shooting an owner. They advise to not only keep guns away from children but also your pets.

King George won’t face any charges.

After the story aired on local TV stations, emails poured in wondering about King George’s safety. Many people were concerned about the dog’s well being because they said that he looked extremely thin.

Also many were worried about the fiancee’s comment of how she was scared what her fiancee was going to do to the dog after he got out from the hospital. She said that King George would be in trouble with the owner and she hoped that he wouldn’t hurt King George too badly.

Also, many calls and emails around the nation were made to the Memphis Humane Society. The organization said that they would be sending out an investigator due to the numerous concerns.

When a local news team went out to the residence of King George and his fiancee’s owner, there was no answer at the door.

The fiancee should drop the guy, if she’s worried he’ll hurt King George. If she’s worried, obviously the guy has a penchant for violence. It’s his fault anyway…he’s the moron who left a loaded gun on a table. If he’s too stupid to realize that the dog didn’t do it on purpose, he just a brainless macho idiot who shouldn’t be allowed to own a gun.

The guy left a loaded gun on an end table? Sometimes stupidity should be painful and, in this case, it certainly was that.

She “hoped that he wouldn’t hurt King George too badly?” That woman needs to drop that guy fast and take the dog with her. Not only would she save the dog, but it’s only a matter of time before her charming fiance starts hurting her, too - if he hasn’t already.

This guy is an idiot for leaving a loaded gun lying around. That has trouble written all over it. Fortunately he was the one who suffered the consequences and not someone else who might have been killed. Hopefully he will learn to either put the gun in a secure place or unload it if he leaves it lying around.

Ya all should see how skinny that dog is in different pics.. :(

He left a loaded gun on the table?? I agree with you all, the guys an idiot! I hope his girlfriend smartens up and drops the guy like a hot potato. King George, I hope you’re okay.

Obviously King George was horrified at what had happened (backed himself in the corner with that look on his face) and his innocently wagging tail while he was trying to be happy and friendly hitting the gun was no ones fault but the human’s who allowed it to be laying open on the table. I would be one to say if anyone touches that poor dog in a bad way because of the stupidity of the owner and the other people there, I would personally want to go there and kick all of their @@@!!!!####!

What really gets me is that the woman said “I knew he was smart, I didn’t think he was that smart. He was always protective. I didn’t think he would be like that.” Like the dog is some evil mastermind who had been plotting to shoot her fiancee all along! One time my puppy knocked over a lit candle…I had no idea that he hated my house so much and wanted to burn it down!

Anyway…I’m really concerned about the dog’s safety. I hope that the humane society or AC will follow through with this case.

loaded guns without a safety do not belong on end tables. fortunately it’s the ass who left the gun there that got the business end.the dog was trying to do us a favor by thinning out the stupid herd-it is getting rather large as of late.

giving a bad name to legal gun owners everywhere. i am a gun owner. i am not a violent person nor an idiot nor a macho brut-i grew up with guns and hunting. the idea that all of us who responsibly own guns, and we’re the majority of legal gun owners, than you, are stupid, careless murderous thugs is propaganda fueled by stories like this one.

Itchmo, I have to say that I am very disappointed with the way you chose to present this news item. Up until the cut (and most don’t bother reading under the cut) your article sounds just like those trashy tabloids you mention. Like many, I started frequenting your site with the start of the recall mess and have stayed on as you have lots of good information and resources. I’ve come to expect much better.

This is a “tail” about mental impairment. Booze, pot, or just too much inbreeding.

I kinda think the man and the woman are right for each other. She and her brother were in the same room and could’ve moved the gun. The dog, though - he should get the heck outta Dodge. He wasn’t being protective and didn’t think he’d done anything wrong - surely his tail bangs into things all the time and he wouldn’t connect that with what happened - the noise, flash, and concussion of a gun going off scared him. (And rightfully so.)

What you have to ask yourself, besides “Do you feel lucky, punk?” is WHY the gun discharged when it fell off the table. It’s hard to make them do that when you’re trying. A hundred to one it was cocked.

Loaded gun? They aren’t too much protection if they’re unloaded. For that matter, .22s aren’t that much protection anyway. But you kinda have to keep it where the dog isn’t going to fetch it and bring it to you barrel-first.

    Smart dog; dumb woman!

I hope the humane society stays on top of this situation. The people have chosen to be together ~ the poor dog doesn’t have that choice. Hopefully the dog will be removed before something awful happens to him. He looks like a beautiful dog. Great Dane Rescues? Somebody in the Memphis area?

  13. Furbabies says:

Even though I don’t know the whole story, I still think that the Humane Society should take this pup away. What kind of moron leaves a loaded gun. without the safety on, in plain sight and on the table. Redneck indeed. And yes, he does look rather skinny for a Dane. All in all IMHO this is not the right home for this dog. Also, the woman should think twice before marrying this nitwit and having kids. Just think if it had happened to a child!

  14. Barbara says:

In a perfect world someone would have armed Micheal VICKS dogs! With any luck since it was only the idiot that was hurt, the authorities will remove the dog before he is hurt.
