Dog Survives Euthanasia Attempt And Four Days In Freezer At Animal Shelter

GabbyAnimal control officer Jamie Glandon was completely shocked when she opened a freezer at the Rushville Animal Shelter in Indiana.

She found Gabby, a dog, alive in the freezer where the carcasses of euthanized animals are put until they are discarded. It is believed that Gabby was euthanized four days before and survived being in the freezer for all that time.

Glandon said, “I went into the freezer to dispose of an animal, and (Gabby) popped her head up out of a barrel.”

She said she was ordered to euthanize Gabby again, but Glandon refused and took the dog to a veterinarian instead.

Glandon added that four other dogs, a border collie and three black lab puppies, survived euthanasia attempts since the summer at the shelter.

Jack Hill, the shelter director, has been suspended over the allegations that five dogs have survived euthanasia attempts.

Glandon said police have confiscated her computer at the shelter and she fears that she may lose her job because she spoke up about the incidences and refused to euthanize Gabby.

She stated, “Gabby is in hiding. She is somewhere where she is safe, and she is recuperating. We’re not making her location known to anybody for safety reasons for her.”

Glandon hopes to find her a new home after she recovers.

    Oh. My. God.

Thank God for Jamie Glandon. I’m just sick over this story.

  2. ljb says:

OMG how could they even think of euthanizing this poor dog again. Totally heartless. Gabby has proven she wants to live. People will be more than happy to give this lucky pup a home. Come on people, it’s Christmas.

  3. amy says:

There is a press release and petition to sign posted on Petfinder.com animal community message board to help save Jamie’s job. She has done amazing things with this shelter.

  4. catmom5 says:

The director ought to lose his job! I’m glad to read something good about AC officers, too! I wonder if the other four were euthanized a second time . . .
This dog is beautiful and I hope she finds a wonderful home. Imagine once the story is out there will be a waiting list of families who want her. Too bad those same folks don’t visit the dogs (and cats) waiting for homes, but without the media coverage.
JAMIE GLANDON IS THE KIND OF AC OFFICER WE NEED MORE OF!!

  5. Marina says:

Amy, Can you tell me where the petition is on Petfinder.com?

  6. Donna says:

Jamie should be HEAD of this shelter. In an intelligent society, instead of killing the innocent.we look for a solution.

  7. Steph says:

It broke my heart when I read that she was ordered to put that dog down again. I was amazed the dog survived and figured great she’s going to get a home. Then to read the heartless person said to put her down. It makes me sick. If I lived in the area I would adopt her in a heartbeat.

  8. Debby says:

If you live anywhere near Rushville, there will be a Rally for Jamie outside the Rushville Courthouse on Tuesday, December 4 at 5 PM. I plan on being there as I live around 40 miles away (Indianapolis).

  9. Pit Bull Lover says:

    …Honestly, I can’t immediately compose a coherent comment…….horrifying, nauseating, heartbreaking…….

“Euthanasia” should NOT lead to further pain and suffering.

*Jamie, you did the right, honorable, humane thing — otherwise, this story would be unbearable to read. I wish the best possible outcome for you (and Rushville’s stray and discarded animals).*

  10. Hazel Chambers says:

Hee is the story from the local paper.

  11. Velvet's Dad says:

Three cheers for Jamie Glandon and Gabby! Only a heartless individual could have ordered another attempt to destroy the dog. And it’s a shame the police don’t have better things to do.

  12. sandra says:

I can’t beleive they put the animals in a freezer before they know they are dead!!! My God, how sick is that place, & what kind of people do that?? I thought the animal vets are the people who care about animals, not ABUSE them!!!!

  13. Scarbo says:

If you think the initial story is horrible, read the update

According to “whistle blower” and assistant animal control officer Jamie Glandon, the problem started Aug. 8. In a formal complaint delivered to Mayor Bob Bridges Monday, Glandon related that Rushville Animal Control Officer Jack Hill euthanized a number of animals, one of which was a 7-year-old Border Collie. Space constraints rendered the situation necessary, as the Collie was deemed “unadoptable” by the shelter and all options were exhausted.

“After putting the animals down, [Jack] put them in the freezer and went on with his day. On August 9, upon arriving at the shelter at 8 .m., I started my daily routine,” Glandon’s typed statement reads. “When Jack got back he informed me he heard a dog howling in the freezer. So at 8:20 a.m. he went into the freezer and found out it was the Border Collie. He went and got the medicine he used to euthanize, opened the freezer door and injected the dog and closed the door back. At 8:47 a.m. the dog was still howling. At 9 a.m. he injected the dog again and closed the door. That was the last we heard from her.”

On Oct. 25, according to the formal complaint, Hill again euthanized several dogs before Jamie began her shift.

“I arrived at work at 8 a.m. and heard whining from the freezer. I opened the door and found three lab puppies on the top of a pile in the freezer still alive. Jack was pulling up to the shelter when I went in. I told him what was going on. I started to pull the puppies out and he told me to leave them be. He went in and got his medicine and injected the dogs again while still in the freezer. That was the last I heard from them. I verbally made my city council representative aware of the situation on Oct. 25, who then made Mayor Bridges aware, and then he spoke with me the same day.”

I can’t bear this. What the hell is wrong with us (homo sapiens, which should really be something altogether different, because we KNOW nothing).

  15. Sherry says:

I think that Jack Hill should be fired, and Jamie Glandon should be promoted to director of Rushville Animal Shelter. She’s obviously more qualified for the job than the current director.

  16. Lynne says:

    Sherry, I agree.

And if you think this story is disturbing, go to the original link and read some of the comments people left. I can’t stand to think that these people live in the same country that I do.

  17. shibadiva says:

Holy cr*p! On another site, I read that this shelter has a 97% kill rate.

Lots of info here on the story, from another shelter volunteer:

  19. Nora and Rufus says:

This is a perfect example of the muderous hidden secrets of shelters and Euthanization (murdering of good dogs and cats) and what the animals go through before they die a hideous and needless most of the times needless death. It is not always swift and never painless or terror free. I just want to scream. If only ALL the people left in charge of such things were hand picked for the right reasons and all as intelligent and merciful as Nathan Winograd.

  20. Nora and Rufus says:

The face on this pup speaks of great suffering and confusion and wanting to have faith in a life fulled with love and promise. I am going to weep.

  21. Nora and Rufus says:

oh God. That poor Border Collie. They are so intelligent. She was screaming for mercy and rescue for days. This is one of the most sickening things I have EVER HEARD OF.

  23. Hazel Chambers says:

I would urge everyone to go to the Rushville paper and read the comments made by many of the “fine” citizens of that town.

Knuckle-dragging troglodytes would not be too far off the mark.

I am sure there are many fine people here…but they do appear to have more than their share of moral midgets.

Why is it that whenever a horrid act of cruelty is commited…this type needs to start whining about PETA plots and animal rights terrorist.

God help us when we become some morally dead that acts of cruelty do not outrage us .

  24. Velvet's Dad says:

    I’m sick reading this.

  25. Carolyn & Maggie says:

This is the stuff of nightmares where I can’t sleep at night.

    Horrifying. Tragic. Heartless. Incomprehensible.

We do this stuff in AMERICA???

I’m glad this horrendous situation has finally seen the light of day where maybe, just maybe, people’s heads will roll and things will improve for the unfortunate unwanted animals of this community.

And yes, I am forced to recognize that there are undoubtedly many other communities where such despicable acts take place on a daily basis.

  26. mittens says:

i can’t think of anything more cruel and inhumane-it’s left me near speechless.that this hero has to hide this poor dog after all this is a complete outrage. thank god for someone with some integrity and courage. dogs are known for their own loyalty and courage- they deserve so much more then this at the hands of thoughtless inept morons.

it’s all well and good to foam on about the police state this and that but the truth is we are responsible on the local level, not george bush or the federal government and sometimes not even the state governments, for most animal control concerns. we also vote for representatives in our states or on our town councils who enact outrageous local laws that disempower pet owners or allow bad apples like this to operate. you have to find out what the laws are in your area and then make it known your displeasure and vote- vote out the bad and vote in people who will support more sane laws concerning animals and allow for more control over animal control and more humane conditions. it’s entirely a local issue which will remain the same no matter who is in power in washington. hell in some places you vote for sheriffs and i know the dog officer in my old town used to be voted in by the town council. it wont change unless the property owning voters in particular start a- bitching.

  27. Nancy G. says:

97% kill rate? Does anyone at that shelter even care [other than Jamie, that is]? Horrible doesn’t cover it. That’s almost every animal that comes in there, dying. That poor 7 year old Border Collie must have belonged to someone before [and why was it considered ‘unadoptable’?]. I live in a rural area of Virginia and the county’s old shelter was like that, the warden seemed to even not like dogs and cats, no attempt was made to find homes for anything. Once a week, down a bunch would go. Then volunteers took over, they are wonderful, they are almost a no-kill shelter now, BUT while trying to build a new shelter, can you believe it, it was sabotaged several times, people around here didn’t want it built. I guess having someone caring about dogs and cats was too much for them to contemplate. 97% kill rate, geez, that’s going to stick with me for a long time. Sounds like the warden’s motto is “The only good animal is a dead animal.” Why aren’t these people charged with animal cruelty?

  28. shibadiva says:

How people like Jamie Glandon keep their sanity in a place like that is beyond me, but I’m glad she did.

Jack Hill apparently uses the needle-in-the-heart technique.

    Here’s the 97% link:

    http://www.germanshepherds.com.....amp;page=6

  29. Pam says:

The Director of this shelter should be discharged immediately. Unfortunately, probably the county commissioners could care less as their main concern is keeping costs down and they don’t really care how he does it. This gives new meaning to the word “shelter” doesn’t it. Thank goodness for Jamie.

  30. Don Earl says:

Shelters with very high kill rates typically are very close to rendering plants. The rendered pets then end up in pet food, phenobarbital and all. And, of course, with the food loaded with euthansia drugs, pets get a tolerance to the stuff to the point a normal dose doesn’t work.

In the mean time, I don’t know what constitutes criminal animal cruelty in most places, but putting a live dog in a freezer for 4 days sure seems cruel to me.

Not to mention, what kind of shelter can’t find a home for lab puppies? Labs have to be one of the gentlest, sweetest tempered dogs around. Most places you’d have to get on a waiting list to find a nice lab puppy.

  31. Jeanie says:

I love that this woman decided to become a vigilante of sorts to protect this poor dog. I wish there were more people who would do the right thing instead of always following orders. Can you imagine being in a freezer for four days with only dead animals as company? That is horrific. Why would she be punished for being a whistle blower? I thought there were laws to protect employees in these situations.

  32. Pam says:

What is especially horrific and despicable is that this has happened in the past at this shelter. And, there have been no changes made to ensure that the euthanasia is being done correctly.

This shelter director should be charged with animal cruelty. According to the story, he has been suspended, at least. This is pathetic.

  33. Lynn says:

I understand the Mayor is leaving his post in January so he’s not very concerned. Let’s give him a huge send-off by blanketing his email with stuff from us so that his regular email can’t get through.

    mayor@cityofrushville.com

Someone ought to send Winograd there and have him discuss other options.

  34. Jenny Bark says:

here is some more information for you. Lets tell these Bas!!!ds what we think of them. From what I am reading the mayor is over the shelter & are poor hero is getting death threats & being called a lier & peta person. She has a couple of kids & volunteered for 3 years before going to work for that shelter.

  36. Jenny Bark says:

Jamie Glandon has been put down a lot on the Rushville Republican & below is a post her husband wrote to defend her & now a lot of posts look better for her, Thank God.

I am Jamie’s Husband and I feel that I must address some of the accusations made in the comments. First Jamie has ZERO interest in the Warden’s position, and has made that clear to multiple people, including members of the incoming administration. Jamie did say something the first two times, to both the Mayor and members of the City Council. They attempted to address the situation informally, however when it continued to happen she had no moral choice but to make a formal complaint. So to accuse her of having political motivations is just plain wrong. As far as her not being qualified to do the euthanasias your right, however a rescue offered to pay to send both Jamie and Jack through a three day certification/training seminar put on by a national animal control organization. When she informed Jack of the offer he told her it would be a waste of time. Jamie has NOT been offered a lie detector test. In fact, the current administration won’t even speak to her without the presence of the town’s attorney. Jamie did NOT make this public. Gabby was placed into rescue since the shelter lacks the vet funds to help her recuperate. Jamie had to tell that rescue what had happened so they could properly care for the dog. She did not contact ANYONE in the media, RTV6 showed up and stuck a camera in her face. Oh and to the snide comment asking if she was “too busy on the computer” to have heard something, most likely she was too busy cleaning kennels, or out chasing strays that people had called in about, or organizing fund-raisers for the shelter. She lives and breathes to make the shelter a better place, that is her ONLY motivation. Jamie has no hatred towards Jack, in fact she likes him. However she was hired by the city to do a job and part of that job is to protect the animals in this city. I realize that those who have already made their minds up will write off my comments assuming bias, and thats your choice, however the truth WILL come out and then all those who are so busy tearing my wife down best be standing up and apologizing. (For the legal beagles out there intent on making Jamie the scape-goat here…. The preceding comments are the sole opinion of Elliott Glandon and are not in any way the comments or opinions of Jamie.)

  37. Sharon says:

There are some humans that deserved to be euthanized. Let’s do it slowly and keep them in a freezer for days until they die. This story makes me sick.

  38. catmom5 says:

Just sent a letter to the mayor. I hope that others will join me. This woman is getting a raw deal, and she’s the hero here!

  39. sandra says:

I was so sickened from what I heard, I called to exspress how I felt to the animal shelter. The person who answered was the lady who saved the dog Gabby. Her name is Jamie. I told her how I was so happy to hear there were people like her there helping these animals from a hellish death. I also e-mailed the shelter & told them how terrible I thought it was they allowed people like that jerk to work in a place with animals!!! The animals should be treated with care in both life & death. There is a petition out to sign for this on www.petfinder.com/shelters/IN320.html the shelters e-mail is; ShelterHelper1@yahoo.com and their phone# is 765-932-4754. I think others should tell them how they feel by calling or e-mailing them like I did. Maybe then some things would change. And sign the petition on www.petloverstips.com/forthlov.....ie+glandon

  40. sandra says:

I just left the e-mail for the shelter, that is the petfinder.com/shelters/IN320.html and the petition is; petloverstips.com/fortheloveofthedog/?s=petitios+forjamie+glandon I hope evryone will join in signing this to help make them change their uncareing ways of the treatment of animals.

  41. A Friend Of Jamie says:

    Thanks to all for supporting Jamie. Just to give you an update;
11/30/07 1540hrs: Jamie placed on Administrative Leave (supposedly to “protect” her) Locked out of shelter. 20+ animals locked in shelter. Per Mayor Bridges no animals in or out until “investigation” completed. The local PD will be feeding/watering (and maybe if the animals are really lucky, cleaning kennels) until this thing is over.

Mayor Bridges tried to stop a fund raiser scheduled for Saturday. The volunteers said “Hell No” and the fund raiser took place anyway, however they couldn’t raise money for the shelter, so they raised it for an animal welfare group. Jamie was forbidden by the Mayor and the PD to show up at the fund raiser.

Jamie is not allowed near the shelter without a uniformed Police escort.

The Good Old Boys in Rushville have made a mistake, they tried to intimidate someone who won’t be intimidated. I spoke with Jamie and her Husband earlier today, their spirits are good, considering. Jamie is worried about the animals at the shelter, in fact she broke down crying multiple times during our conversation. Her husband is ticked off, actually furious would be a better word for it. He told me that the city better have every i dotted and every t crossed because he said he’s, “coming after them both guns blazing.” as a result of the slander and horrid manner in which they’ve conducted their “investigation”

  42. Jenny Bark says:

A Friend Of Jamie, thanks for the update. It is so sad & wrong what is happening to Jamie, her family & the animals at the shelter. Please let everone on Itchmo know if their is anything else they can do to help. My prayers & I’m sure all of Itchmo people’s prayers are with you all. Please keep the updates comming, thanks again.

  43. Debby M says:

Just went to Petfinder and this was posted:
The Rushville Animal Shelter is undergoing an investigation and will be closed until further notice. There can be no adoptions or rescues until then. We have many animals in need of homes but no way to get them out. Please check back often…
Please don’t waste your time going to the shelter or calling.. It has been CLOSED.
    *****************************
I have also been posting on the Rushville Republican forums section -just joined it a few days ago as I live in Indianapolis, 32 miles away from this “town” - my user name there is OK4ablonde - I’m trying to educate these people from Podunk Junction and it is impossible. I’m now called the “city woman” who doesn’t know how to put a dog or cat down “properly”. Their “properly” is a trip behind the barn with a 22 caliber shotgun.

Now I received an email this morning to remind me about the Rally for Jamie on Tuesday and found out that the Mayor and Police Dept. are trying to intimidate/coerce Jamie into telling the location of Gabby. Be strong Jamie, and I plan on being there Tuesday night.

  44. Hazel Chambers says:

Evil prevails when those who know better keep silent. I am sure there are caring people in this nasty little town….but I hope they speak up before the moral trogoldytes win this battle.

What a loathsome group these idiots sound like.

  45. kaefamily says:

I might have missed it but is Gabby with an animal rescue group now?

  46. shibadiva says:

Yes. I think it might be Indiana-PAW. Jamie has been working with them since July. Because of the extremely high kill rate in the Rushville shelter, the group has made Rushville a special project, and has pulled a number of pets out.

    http://www.indiana-paw.com/rushvilleadopters.htm

Jamie meets with the town council today at 5:30. Two rallies are being held in advance to support her. Wish I could be there.

  47. former "local" says:

I grew up in Rushville but have lived on the West Coast for 8 years. I still have family and friends there, and please rest assured, not everyone is heartless, stupid, podunk, or uneducated. As an animal guardian (I can’t really say I “own” my cat of 10+ years, since it’s more likely she owns me :), I too am sickened by the progression of events here. Let us just remember that through the passionate work and word-of-mouth of everyone on this forum, we can change some things. Not everything will be resolved; Rushville doesn’t change much, but many residents are trying. If nothing else, Gabby will be saved, and some much-needed attention will be brought to an issue that so desperately needs it. Again, I don’t think it’s fair to whitewash all the people of Rushville as uncaring and idiotic. To do so would be detrimental to the cause, in my opinion, for it would just be mudslinging against the “other” side. Let those on the side of animal welfare conduct themselves with compassion and dignity towards everyone, human or otherwise.

  48. shibadiva says:

“Former local”, I couldn’t agree with you more. Reading the comments in the Rushville Republican, it’s clear that many many residents are for the animals, calling for residents to come together and solve the problem. This is in line with the message that the rally organizers wanted to get out. Any mudslinging would not help Jamie’s cause, and it’s clear that the shelter and the town need her to continue to make a difference.

  49. A Friend Of Jamie says:

Thanks to the 15-20 people who came out and stood in the freezing weather on the sidewalk to support Jamie. Thanks to the 30+ people that showed up for the board of works meeting to support Jamie. Anyone notice how the mayor was sweating like a pig? :)

They did not address the situation last night. I’ve spoken to Jamie and she fully expects them to call a special meeting of the board of works and give her about 1/2hr notice so they can slam her without the public scrutiny.

Keep and eye on http://www.justiceforgabby.com/ for updates!

  50. Jenny Bark says:

    A Friend Of Jamie, THANKS.

  51. shibadiva says:

A Friend of Jamie: I have your justice site bookmarked for updates. I hear the mayor is helping clean kennels these days. I’m sorry to hear that the council declined to address the situation. Guess we just keep signing those petitions and writing letters. There’s also the fundraising auction on eBay, that has a little over 3 days remaining, at time of this writing.

I’ve started a topic in the forums:
