Gale

Gale, a border collie, survived a nine day ordeal being stuck in a car trunk.

When Tamar Jones, Gale’s owner, couldn’t find Gale, she thought that her dog had been stolen or killed. Neighbors and friends searched all over for the ten-year-old dog, but Gale was nowhere to be found in the neighborhood.

Instead she was found inside the trunk of a car.

The ordeal started when Gale jumped into the trunk of a worker’s car who was doing some odd jobs at Jones’ property. The dog became startled when she heard a plane and jumped into the trunk for safety.

Jones saw Gale jump in the car, and five minutes later, the border collie wasn’t there anymore. But in actuality, Gale was hiding behind a tool box and couldn’t be seen.

The worker drove off in his car, with no idea that Gale was taking a ride in his trunk. The man went on a week-long trip to London, and when he got back nine days later, he opened up his trunk to see Gale inside behind the tool box.

Fortunately, Gale survived without food and water for nine days. Jones said that Gale perhaps was able to get some water that leaked into the trunk or from condensation.

Her vet suspects that this border collie shut down her body completely to conserve energy to keep the blood pumping.

Trevor Turner, Chief Vet for Crufts said: “The longest a dog can survive without food is for 14 days, but without water they rarely last longer than 48 hours. I can’t quite believe she is alive.”

Gale is now back to her usual happy self and stays by Jones’ side all the time.

Attention all vehicle manufacturers. My new car has an escape hatch in case someone is locked in a trunk. But teaching a dog to learn how to use it?

Methinks auto design engineers need to go back to the drawing board and put a low voltage motion sensor in the trunk so that it issues an auditory alert when the trunk is closed and there’s movement inside. Of course this means that everyone will need to anchor down their parcels, but that’s easily done.

    Poor puppy.

Yes and thank God that man opened his trunk!
