I already had heard about this sanctuary in Utah from a friend who lives in that state. I think they have done a wonderful job, historically, and are very devoted to all the animals. I read a post on a forum I belong to about 300 dogs being flown here from a country in the middle east where dogs are not cared for and live homelessly on the streets and most are feral and can be quite agressive. Special runs were supposedly being constructed to house these animals individually to prevent aggression among those dogs. I am appalled that they are importing dogs while there are so many neglected, abused and suffering right here in America!

It is a nice story and glad these dogs, cats and other critters are finding sanctuary and some new homes.

Ladyhawke,
You are correct, Best Friends does an excellent job and is very committed to animals, ALL animals. However, just because they rescue dogs from abusive and life threatening situations in other countries by no means limits the dogs they care for right here in our own country. My husband and I vacation to the sanctuary each year to volunteer. This recent trip, we spent time with the dogs from the middle east. Most have been adopted out already but the ones that remain are fully integrated with the other dogs there. Another example of their caring was getting an emergency response crew on the ground in Peru immediately following the earthquakes. They helped residents get medical care for their pets, taught the communities about spaying and neutering, and had tremendous success. Not one of the animals saved in Peru came at the cost of an animal here. They recently closed down a puppy mill here in the states and rescued over 100 of their dogs, and numerous other examples of their far-reaching rescues can be found on their website. This is one of the greatest organizations for animal rescue and education we have in the world today.

Ladyhawke– They rescued several dogs from puppy mills that operate legally here in the US. I watched the show Friday night, it was fantastic. They went to the Animal shelter in Omaha, NE and got dogs that had been removed from a puppy mill. They were very fearful of humans, and had no concept of what it meant to play. They were filthy, and were so used to having no choice but to walk in their own excrements. They had been caged all there lives in 2×2 cages. And this is legal. These people are doing wonderful stuff. Every animal lover should watch the show.
