I am not a long time user of Halo but have been using it for a little over a year. I was using Merrick before without any issues but after seeing all the hype about Ellen and Halo I decided to give them a try. I had also wanted to try a good quality dry food for my cat as well as I had always fed canned foods. I got some of the canned salmon and the dry salmon to try and my animal LOVED the food. I have been feeding Halo for a little over a year and while I have had less than stellar results with the chicken flavored foods when I tried them, the salmon flavor has been well accepted and have shown good results.

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a new bag of the salmon dry food for my cat. I poured some in her bowl and as I was zipping the bag back up I looked in saw a big hunk of food stuck together with a bunch of greenish-white mold. I was shocked at what I saw and was almost ill just looking down into the bag at it. Luckily I had noticed this big green ball of danger before my cat had eaten any of the food. This really distressed me especially after feeding this food for over a year with such good results. I contacted the Petco where I bought the food and they told me I would have to contact the manufacturer about the problem. I had contacted them when I first switched over about some questions I had and never received a response so I'm not really expecting one this time either.

I'm sorry Ellen and Halo, I really liked your products but I can't take the risk of feeding my beloved pet contaminated food. I care deeply about the safety and well being of my animal and I just can't take any chances. I have since gone back to my previous brand and am now questioning the wisdom of making the switch in the first place. I tried to fix something that wasn't broken to begin with and boy did I learn a powerful lesson from it. I do hope you get your contamination issues solved though, the safety of your customers pets really depends on it.

It makes perfect sense for Ellen to own a Pet Food line. She loves animals and PETA is for the protection of animals. Although I am not a member, I did go to their sight and read their mission statement and other information as to what they stand for and do to help stop animal cruelty.
I wonder if the people write negatively simply dislike Elen and have absolutely no idea what the food is or isn't. Personally, I came to this site because I have a diabetic dog and am always looking for food I can feed her, but after reading so much (hate mail), I was disturbed enough to check a few thins out. I would as you all to do the same.
This is the PETA mission statement:
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 2.0 million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world.

PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other "pests," and the abuse of backyard dogs.

PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaign

I changed my cats over to this food without issue. I didn't know Ellen D was a part owner and I wouldn't stop buying something they enjoy because of PETA. Saying something 3 times doesn't change the quality of the product and if it's good. I'll continue to buy it as long as my three housecats enjoy it.

I know Ellen loves her dogs as much as I do mine. I have rescued abused dogs for 12yrs. now, and have kept them myself. My one baby(who is actually the youngest, age 5) has allergies, has been put on a special diet, but seems to be no change. Can you tell me if this is good for him, and if so, which do you suggest? Thank You so much. We Love You Ellen. Brody & Noni

I will support anything that Ellen is a part of. She is a good person, who helps anyone that she can. Why would she promote something that would be harmful to any pet/person. Come on! To Janet Chism; What does your comment have anything to do with this website or with Ellen? To Ellen; thank you for what you do.

And for all of you who want to feed "human grade" food to your animals.. You'll never find a food label that states that. The AAFCO does not allow that on the labels. Good luck. If you don't like the canned food or dry food sold in the stores go back to the original home-made recipe.

For all of you people who "tried" a bag of cat/dog food on your animals. Did you keep in mind that this brand of food is very high quality and you can't just switch foods without slowly introducing it into the diet? Most foods require an adjusting period and one bag of food isn't going to create a miracle for your animal. As a standard when trying new pet foods you should feed it at least a month to get the full effect.
You need to slowly introduce the food mixing it with your old food for about a week. It would be the same as a human living off ramen noodles for a year then switching to a high fiber, high protein diet without slowly doing it.. It would be a living hell for a week or more.
Do your research and don't review it if you haven't fed it for a long period of time.
My cat had problems with swollen lips and lymph nodes before going on this diet. His coat was getting thin and dull and he was lethargic half the time and hyperactive half the time. He wasn't healthy. I switched to the Halo brand Spot's Stew Indoor Cat Dry Formula and within 3-4 weeks his lips were back to normal, his lymph nodes shrunk and his coat is now a beautiful shiny coat. With results like these how could I ever speak bad of this product?
My very active Border collie has also had positive results. Before I started feeding her the Adult dry Spot's stew she ate like a bird, was actually overweight even though I exercise her vigorously at least 4x a week and her coat was dull.
Now she LOVES to eat, is slim and trim. Her coat and muscles are beautiful looking and her activity level has increased 10x. The old food would last 2 months before I had to buy another bag.. Talk about vitamins and minerals going bad!
Both my cats and dog's stool have become small and semi-hard. They don't go as frequently as they used to so that creates less clean-up time for me.
Yes it is expensive, but the bag lasts a LONG time because they don't have to eat as much to get all the nutrients they need. Personally I buy the smaller bags so the ingredients don’t go bad and I can buy a fresh bag within 2-3 weeks.
I'll stay with the Halo brand until I have specific evidence that another brand is better. My pets love the taste and are completely healthy.

I came here to read about feedback, and its informative to know people's negative experience, but it would be SOOOOO much more helpful to know what food you feed your cats instead of this one. Please help as I have a very finicky cat who is almost starving himself in lieu of eating the Nutro Natual Choice Indoor Formula. He'll eat wet & table scraps (though I don't encourage these), so at least he hasn't lost his appetite, but just has trouble with the dry he's been eating for two years.

I am working with a rescue group for cats and kittens. Denise Uriate that runs the rescue group offers free spaying and neutering as well as fostering cats/kittens from the shelter. She also takes cats/kittens from people who can no longer keep them. She works a full time job and runs the rescue. A lot of the care and feeding comes out of her pocket even though most of the cats/kittens are adopted.

What I am asking is that Halo Foods donate food to these rescue cats and kittens so that we can take in more kittens and save their lives from euthanasia. This would also enable her rescue group to spay and neuter more feral and tame cats.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I have used Halo for a year for my cat and dog. In the last few months the food for both have changed. When I ask a question, they will not give me a direct answer. Just people have requested the changes. What are they putting in the food that warrants a better tasting sticker that can be peeled of the bag? It is totally different in the way it looked when I first started using it. The protein is to low as well. I will be trying Wellness Core for my persian cat and maltese dog. Thank you. Maureen

Why are people so against Ellen supporting this? First of all, why would she lie? 2nd- why would she buy part of a company if she feels they aren't the best, and 3rd- it is illegal to false advertise.

I've been feeding my Shih-tzu Eukanuba since he was 3 months old (he is now 6 turning 7 in August). With the whole Pet food recall, I got scared and started to educate myself a little bit more about dog food. I switched from Eukanuba to Halo Wholesome Chicken Dry Food towards the end of last year. Out of nowhere in Feb, he started getting seizures.
Took him to the vet and had some blood work done. Turns out he had minor liver infection. So he was on antibiotics
for 10 days. He would be ok for 2weeks-1 month and seizure would come back. After reading CPOM comment, I am thinking that this product may have cause his seizures.
