NEW RECALL: Evolve Dry Kitten Food Recalled

Evolve is recalling their dry kitten food formula with the Best Used By date of September 13, 2008.

Although no date is listed on the Evolve pet food recall page, we believe this has been posted within the last week. FDA does not list Evolve-brand food at all, just their Triumph canned food (which was a part of a previous recall).

It’s been added to our recall list. Unfortunately, it’s been more than 2 months since the food was made.
Evolve’s announcement says:

Evolve Kitten Food made on March 12, 2007 has now been included in [the recalled pet food] group.

As of today, 99.4% of the 27,560 lbs. of product made on March 12, 2007 (Best Used By Sep 13 08) has been accounted for and removed from sale. Currently there is 168 lbs. that has not been accounted for. The above 168 lbs. is a total of 9 units in 3# and 7# sizes.

Full announcement after the jump:

(Thanks menusux)

NOTICE To All Concerned Pet Owners:

In the on-going FDA investigation of contaminated rice protein concentrate, the FDA has attempted to link other brands that might have possibly been affected due to potential cross contamination of ingredients. Evolve Kitten Food made on March 12, 2007 has now been included in this group.

Based on the date of manufacture, retail information, consumer contact and expected daily consumption, we strongly believe ALL remaining products from this date have been safely consumed with no adverse effects.

The Evolve formulae do NOT contain any wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate, and the FDA tests confirmed that no melamine was present.

As a valuable Evolve customer, we want you to be aware of this situation despite the fact no melamine have been found by independent testing. This action is a precautionary measure only, as there is no evidence to suggest these products in any way pose a health hazard.

This action effects the March 12, 2007 manufacture date and product only. No other Evolve products have been or will be involved. Feel free to contact us at nationalsales@triumphpet.com with any questions or concerns.

Thank you.

damn! i know it shouldn’t matter if it’s kitten/puppy or cat/dog because it’s effects are pretty devastating regardless, but i do react a bit more when i think of a 2lb kitten eating this $***!!

gotta give credit for annoucing how much is accounted for though.

THERE IS ONE OF THE SILENT PULLS. THEY KNEW, AND PULLED IT OFF THE SHELVES IN HOPES OF NEVER HAVING TO TELL. HAD THEY GOTTN THE ENTIRE AMOUNT BACK I DOUBT ANYONE WOULD HAVE KNOWN THEY MADE ANY POISON FOOD. ONE MORE EXAMPLE OF WHY, NO PET FOOD COMPANY CAN BE TRUSTED. IT WAS MADE ON MARCH 12TH WHAT BY THE 16TH THEY FORGOT WHAT WAS IN IT OR WHERE IT WAS MADE. OR MAYBE THEY BOUGHT TAINTED PRODUCT AFTER IT ALL STARTED. OH WAIT THEY DIDNT SAY IF ITS WHEAT GLUTEN, RICE PROTEIN, OR CROSS CONTAMINATION. TRUTH IS THEY ARENT SURE WHAT GETS INTO WHAT IN THOSE PLANTS. THE REALITY IS DRY INGREDIENTS AND DRY PRODUCTS GET INTO EVERYTHING.

  6. Cynthia says:

Another pet recall makes my gut knot up. I can’t help thinking what’s next. The FDA is still out there testing pet foods.

  7. Anonymous says:

OH WAIT I MISSED THAT NO WHEAT GLUTEN, NO RPC AND NO MELAMINE FOUND BUT WE RECALLED IT ANYWAY AND THATS THE ONLY ONE THERE WILL BE NO MORE. I DONT KNOW ABOUT ANY OF YOU BUT IM SICK OF HEARING THATS IT NO MORE. THESE COMPANYS ARE NOT THAT DISORGANIZED. THEY KNOW WHAT WAS MADE WHAT DAY AND SHOULD HAVE PULLED IT ALL IMMEDIATELY AND TESTED IT. ID HAVE ALOT MORE TRUST HAD JUST 1OF THEM SAID WE ARE PULLING ANY PRODUCT IN OUR LINE MADE @ X,Y,Z PLANT AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE. TWO RECALLS SHOULD HAVE GOTTN ALL OF IT OFF THE MARKET. 1 FOR THE WHEAT GLUTEN AND 1 FOR THE RPC. BUT THAT WOULD HAVE LOST THEM TO MUCH MONEY. SO NOW HERE WE ARE TWO MONTHS LATER AND NO SIGN OF AN END TO THIS NIGHTMARE. IVE HAD A COUPLE OF THE FOODS I USED PULLED. BOTH OF WHICH I WAS USING FOR 5WK OLD MINI DACHSHUNDS THAT WERE JUST OVER 1LB WHEN THIS NITEMARE STARTED I WORRY EVERYDAY. IVE ALSO FOUND OUT THAT OTHER PRODUCTS I USED WERE MADE @ THE SAME MFGR OF ALOT OF TAINTED FOOD.

That math doesn’t work out. They make it sound like it’s nine bags of food but that can’t be.

  9. Anonymous says:

SLT YOUR RIGHT IT DOESNT ADD UP. GIVE ME A MIN ILL FIGURE OUT HOW MANY BAGS AND WHATS IN A UNIT. BY WHAT I KNW OF WHOLESALE AND HOW THEY PACKAGE FOR RETAIL JUST GOTTA GET A PEN ND PAPER

  10. Anonymous says:

NEAR AS I CAN FIGURE THATS 48 BAGS. IF A UNIT OF 3LB BAGS CONTAIN 6BAGS THERES 7OF THOSE UNITS EQUALING 126LBS AND IF A UNIT OF 7LB BAGS CONTAINS 3BAGS THERES 2OF THOSE EQUALING 42LBS. SO ITS 6 7LB BAGS AND 42 3LB BAGS.

  11. Chris says:

Thanks again to Itchmo for great work staying right on top of this before anyone else even hears about it.
We encourage everyone feeding dry foods to consider Champion Pet Food products for total peace of mind safety: Canadian made, using Canadian human grade ingredients, NO outsourcing whatsoever, no Wheat/Corn/RPC/Glutens used in their plant at all, and because they make their own food, there won’t be cross contamination concerns from other foods. Orijen and Acana have rapidly become the #1 choice amongst our clients for this very reason, not to mention it’s great food as well.
Not meant as a plug or advertisement for this food, just making readers aware that there is a manufacturer out there that goes above and beyond all others to ensure the safety of their food and of your pets.

We need to unite. We should bombard Washington politicians, the President on down that WE DO NOT WANT ANYTHING FROM CHINA AND OR THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES. We send our food to them and in return we get poison! Stop already. There is not a single solitary thing that is made here in the USA, from a bic pen to apple chips (which I nearly choked on when I discovered Made in China) Greed!!!!! Japan doesn’t even trust China trade.

Besides low grade poor quality food (because Americans want cheap they say), they treat animals cruelly. After touring China, Paul McCartney states he will never perform there again because of their cruelty. Cats and Dogs are skinned alive for their fur and eaten. They put tin cans over the mouths of dogs. It bothers me to even write about it.

Nordstroms, Sears and a few others recalled fur trimmed coats, etc. because it was made from cats and dogs and some say faux fur. liars!!! The cheap shoes they sell, sneakers, supposedly imitation leather, are not labeled. And if they are they lie. It is so disturbing. We must help our defenseless animals. When will these politicians listen to the people who put them in office. I am sick and disgusted.

LET US BAN CHINA ALONG WITH PAUL MCCARTNEY!!!!!!

I feed my cat Innova kibble, and it is still safe - no foods by their manufacturer (Natura Pet) have been included in the recall. Natura Pet does make a food called “Evo” but that’s not the same as Evolve. You can see their individual websites here:
    INNOVA: http://www.naturapet.com/
    EVOLVE: http://www.evolvepet.com/

The Innova dry foods are made in a facility owned and operated solely by Natura Pet for the production of their foods, so there’s no cross-contamination. Their wet foods are currently made at a Menu Foods plant in SD (which doesn’t thrill me), but they’re in the process of buying/building a canning plant of their own so they can have 100% control over that (as they do with their dry food). Personally I think that’s a serious commitment to quality and control, and should be commended.

Either way, I hope that helps. :-)

Thanks to Itchmo and all of the people who have asked questions and raised concerns with the FDA and the pet food industry, it looks like change might be coming finally.

Reuters reports that Chinese export food industry is being pressured by buyers in the US., Japan, and Europe: “‘This scandal has had severe consequences for the whole industry,’ said Chuk Ng, general manager of Nutrogen (Dalian) Co. Ltd, a company specializing in organic and non-genetically modified (GMO) farm products.”

“Pressured by the U.S. government after the melamine breaches, Beijing has pledged to act on food safety and announced an industry clean-up that would bring inspections for fertilizer, pesticides and additives in livestock feed.

Foreign buyers, reluctant to take risks, are sending large quantities of food samples to international testing specialists.”

“‘The safety tests for raw materials are likely to get tougher,’ said a senior official from a Japanese food processing plant in China.”

To clear up the question about Evolve and Innova……All Innova dry food is made by Naturapet at their own manufacturing facility. They do not have their dry foods (Innova, Evo, California Natural, Healthwise, Karma) made at any other facility. They have total control over the sourcing, purchasing and manufacturing process. I have used their foods for over 10 years, have recommended it to thousands of people who have been extremely happy with the results, have attended meetings with Natura representatives and have been given extensive information regarding their entire process. Just wanted to make sure everyone knows Innova and Evolve are in no way related.

I have been feeding Kumpi Kat for 2 weeks now. All 3 cats love it, passed up the Hills c/d for it in the taste test I did when I first got the bag. Evy has answered personally every email I sent to the company. She was honest about the food being 50/50 OK for cats with UT problems and wants me to keep in touch with her about my one cat. They seem more satisfied and don’t eat as much of it, so it’s not more expensive in the long run.

I know what you mean. I have been reading these boards and searching the web to try and find something only produced here in the USA. I think (hope) I have found it. Please if anyone knows better, let me know! There is a manufacturing plant about 15 miles from where I live called Crosswinds, located in Sabetha, KS. I have been to the plant and talked to the manager. They have all kinds of business awards on their walls in the reception area that they have won for being all organic, and Kosher. They are Organic certified as well as being certified by the American Institute of Baking. The manager assured me they only use US ingredients, & human grade meats in their pet foods, and everything is manufactured right there on site. Nothing is sent out to be made in other plants. He also assured me they have never had any recalls. They even manufacture their own equipment for making the dog food. (In a separate building, of course.) Here is a link to their website, although there is very little info on it. http://www.crosswindindustries.com/index.htm

So far I only know of 3 foods they make. Here are the names and websites. If anyone knows of any other they manufacture, I’d like to know. I would also like to know if anyone knows anything bad about any of these.
    I-Vet http://www.ivetfoods.com/index.html
    Nature’s Logic http://natureslogic.com/
    Kumpi http://www.kumpi.com/

Nature’s Login & Kumpi can be ordered online, and I-Vet is sold and Vet’s offices. I bought the I-Vet as it is by far the cheapest, and I could buy it at a vet office about 20 miles from my home. I wanted something I could get locally. When I brought it home and tried it on my 4 cats & 1 dog they all loved it, immediately! Very surprising as they are usually very picky. I don’t think I-Vet has canned (if they do they didn’t carry it at this vet’s office), so I am thinking about ordering some Natures Logic. It looks very good.

Of all the foods I’ve seen mentioned on this and other boards, Kumpi is the only one by Crosswinds that anyone has ever said anything about. No one has ever mentioned the other 2, so please understand I am not recommending these, just passing on the info I have found out about Crosswinds. I would love to hear what the rest of you think about these 3 foods.

I’ll post it here as well, another week later. for those that cant afford top of the line pet food(myself included), Dad’s makes their own food for both cats & dogs. All ingredients used in any of their dry foods are grown(or from) in the USA. Their plant in in Meadville PA. It comes in a variety of formulas for both cats & dogs. Nothing of theirs have been recalled.
21 animals here all like it. No store bought wet food of any kind, Im still cooking ckn & broth & adding it to any dry they get.
Ive been trying to tell people the difference Ive SEEN in my animals since they came off store wet food, but a relative asked me yesterday if one of my sr. cats had been bathed & groomed recently, because he looks so much better now. It was simply removing the store bought wet :)
