Ex-Soldier Who Beat Dog To Death Receives Suspended Prison Sentence

Warning: This story may disturb some readers.

A former UK soldier received a suspended prison sentence for taking revenge on a dog who he believed attacked his kitten.

James Hyland broke his way into the home of the Hunt family and then beat the couple’s chihuahua with a hammer. Hyland believed that the chihuahua attacked his kitten, Boss. In fact, it was the Hunt’s other dog, Chan, that had actually attacked his kitten.

Hyland has been banned from keeping animals for five years, and was given a 16-month prison sentence which has been suspended for two years. He also must complete 200 hours of community work and has been ordered to compensate the couple for the loss of their dog.

The court recorder said, “I can only describe it as an act of unspeakable cruelty. You slaughtered their pet dog with repeated blows of a hammer in an act of extreme violence. You were bent on irrational revenge on the animal. It matters not one jot you believed the dog killed your cat. We all know animals act on instinct. Adding an even sadder twist, it was not the right dog. In my view it goes beyond stupid, it was violent and inhumane.”

Hyland said that when he believed his kitten was going to die, he was so upset and just wanted to kill the dog that he thought had killed his cat.

His kitten did survive and recover from the attack.

Good thing that soldier didn’t break into my home. He’d be dead with a gunshot between the eyes.

RIP sweet pup. I’m sorry you died by the hands of such a loser.

the man is a ticking time bomb, wait until something a human does sets this loon off.

he committed a crime breaking and entering into a home, had he stolen a tv he’d be serving prison time but because he killed a dog he gets off…go figure.

how horrible, that man should be hit in the head with hammer, just once, unreal..

After reading the full story, the kitten was attacked in the neighbor’s garden and yes, it is fenced. Had he kept his kitten in his own yard, it would never had been attacked. Perhaps he should have taken that hammer to his own head for being such an idiot and allowing his pet to wander into that situation.

Poor Kitten, Poor Dog. Poor Dog Owners.

    Dumb, dumb Man.

Ditto, NH. from boyfriend and I both.

I can’t believe anyone would do that to a poor dog. He may have been upset that his cat was attacked, but beating the chihuahua with a HAMMER? That’s freakin insane! No animal (or human) deserves that, even if they did attack his cat. Besides, his cat did survive and is recovering. I wish the owners of the chihuahua had attacked him the way he attacked their dog. It’s not fair that he only gets a suspension for 2 years, he deserves to be in prison! Denise is right, he is a ticking time-bomb, and who knows what will happen if a human pisses him off! What an a**hole!

Let me see if I understand:

Kitten jumps fence into neighbor’s yard.

    Dog attacks kitten.

Dog’s owner kicks their dog in an attempt to get it to stop.

Kitten’s owner takes pet to vet who says it may not live.

Kitten’s owner goes home, breaks into neighbor’s home, and kills the WRONG dog in their kitchen.

Dog’s owner finds their other dog dead and blood splattered all over the kitchen.

I think the Kitten’s owner is a loose canon.

Oh yes, the court awarded the dog’s owner 250 pounds for the deceased dog; 70 pounds for court costs; and 50 pounds for mental distress.

I’d be locked up in a psych ward if I went downstairs and saw my dog murdered with blood all over the kitchen. And for mental distress they got 50 pounds [about $100 USD].

Holy hell! I hope he does not get his cat back! Geez! What if it pees on something or knocks over a knick-knack–two things kittens and cats often do! Wow.

    What a monster!

I agree: He should note be allowed to have any pets, ever!
