Family Missing 150-Pound Tortoise

Sweetie

Sweetie is like any other beloved pet. She responds when you call her name. She bangs on the sliding glass door when she’s hungry. She even participated in a family wedding.

Except, Sweetie is not a normal pet. She’s a 150-pound tortoise and she has been missing for a week.

Her family thinks that she wandered away when someone accidentally left the back gate open. They desperately want her back.

Sweetie has been part of the Coahran family for 11 years. Coaharan bought Sweetie for her daughter’s fourth birthday. At that time, Sweetie was the size of a chocolate chip cookie. Even though the family knew that the tortoise would grow to be extremely big, they still wanted to have her be part of the family.

The last time that the family saw Sweetie was last Friday when a family member went out to feed their tortoise. The next day, the food was untouched. Sweetie was missing.

From Arizona Daily Star:

This is not the first time that Sweetie has wandered away. Six years ago, she decided to explore the neighborhood, but she didn’t get far. She was picked up by a neighbor.

The family is worried that they will never see their cherished family member again.

“We have a lot of memories with Sweetie, and she’s been a part of our family for 11 years,” Quanna Coahran said. “She’s a turtle with personality. She didn’t just stick her head in her shell; she responded to you.”

Update: Sweetie has been found. Last week, a woman spotted the tortoise crossing the street. She called a local reptile rescue and rehabilitation to take care of the missing tortoise. During his time away from the Coahran family, she has been well fed and taken care of. We’re glad that you’re safe and sound, Sweetie.

(Thanks Shaun)

This is NOT a Galapagos tortoise but a Sulcata, Please make the correction.

  5. Mike Christianson, DVM says:

First of all, Sweetie is not a Galopagos tortoise. This is an African spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata). More commonly calleda Sulcata tortoise. At 150 lbs, this in not likely to be a female as they rarely get more than 75 lbs. Males, however get much larger and have the potential to get up to 200 lbs.
