Thanks Itchmo, Emily and menusux. I had hoped by now the PFC would have learned to honest and forthcoming. I guess I live in the 3rd dimension. My first thought was: here we go again! Second thought: we don't know what the protein source is????? but it's okay only a little was purchased. And, the FDA...

I am glad that Itchmo keeps us informed and the sleuthers here. You keep my pets safe. Thankyou.

They couldnt tell if it were melamine or CA?

They should have sent it to the lab in Texas! They have proved they can find it.

And only "very little" of it went to the public. Thats like saying its OK if only a few pets are put at risk of becoming ill. Its reminding me too much of the 'only 200' pets died that was reported from that recent survey. I dont understand why they are being allowed to carry out this recall in such an irresponsible, secretive manner. It just proves that anything connected with Menu Foods is not trustworthy. They dont deserve to be in business. I swear this all is going to give me high blood pressure. I wish someone out there had some Lick Your Chops food from the dates posted, I bet Don Earl would love some for testing purposes, its the only way we will all know for sure what was truly in that food.

So what are they using to get possible melamine? I dont see wheat gluten in their product but I do see rice gluten.......this deserves way more info than the company is providing. Its interesting that the flavors recalled all say brown rice but if you look at the meat flavor that doesnt have the words "brown rice" in the title, it also has rice gluten.....and Im not understanding, they dont tell the public about it so they can remove any from their shelves? This sucks!

Oops, missed that one. Well that makes it even worse then. After more than 8 months, there is still poison in Menu Foods?

What's interesting here is that Healthy Pet Foods received notification about elevated protein levels in July, but nothing was done about reporting this until November, and that was done by their co-packer, Menu Foods.

There was nothing on the Healthy Pet Foods website about this recall:

http://www.healthypetfoodsinc.com/main.cfm

And not one thing on Menu's--the only material for November 14, 2007 on their website deals with their 3rd quarter report:

http://www.menufoods.com/ir/docs/Q3 2007 press release.pdf

Nothing at all on the recall page.

http://www.menufoods.com/recall/index.html

The food is also sold online at Healthy Pet Food's website.

http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/dept.asp?dept%5Fid=130&brand%5Fid=253

Healthy Pet Foods should know how to handle a recall--some of their dry Lick Your Chops, co-packed by Chenango, was involved in the Wilbur-Ellis "RPC" recall in April:

http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/chenango04_07.html

LICK YOUR CHOPS LAMB MEAL, RICE & EGG CAT FOOD, 4 LBS. packages,
Code date:  Best Used By April 29, 08;

Menu Foods has infinitely more experience in recalls--they should know by now that the way they did it previously didn't work either. This appears to affect their NJ plant, but we have no information regarding why only these varieties of this particular brand are the only recalls.

And what we hear is that no one's apparently able to identify the source of the elevated protein levels, yet this recall is considered not likely to mean adverse consequences from eating the food.

Don't see how that statement can be made when no one knows what it really is, and don't know why MF doesn't consider this a potential problem for all food which came from their NJ plant.

ANY of an unknown substance reaching the consumer level should have meant prompt issuance of an official recall.

http://www.petfoodindustry.com/ViewArticle.aspx?id=18136

Pet Food Industry "Recall Realities"--October, 2007

"There are no mandatory recalls in either federal or state feed laws."

"FDA asks to be notified of recalls immediately, but there is no legal obligation to do so. It is usually better to contact the state feed control official (www.aafco.org) and discuss the scenario before contacting FDA or other agencies. To notify an agency or official is a business decision."

You bet it was a business decision--all the way around.

Yes, this was most certainly recalled before. I still have the link but when I tried to go there I got this: "This blog has been archived or suspended for a violation of our Terms of Service." I know Chris Pearson was just reposting what others had on their blogs, so I don't know what's going on. But here is the info:
__________________________________________
Chenango Valley is adding one more product to the recall list in addition to SmartPak and Drs. Fosters & Smith products:

    * Lick Your Chops Lamb Meal, Rice & Egg Cat Food in packages with a net weight of 4 lbs. and a code date best used by April 29, 2008.

For all recent recalls, check our Recall Update: Thursday.

NOTE: FDA claims they were unaware of either of theses recalls. It’s amazing that after more than a month of recall after recall, that the FDA still can’t get a handle on the information before the blogs do.

"Michael stated that very little of the product went out to consumers."

Now that's interesting. Why does the FDA report say:

VOLUME OF PRODUCT IN COMMERCE
2,168 cases

In commerce? Sounds like it had already been shipped out for sale.

Was the food recalled?

Are we to assume that no other product made at that manufacturer/plant used the ingredient that caused raised protein values?

Sure sounds like a don't ask, don't tell scenario...

Thanks to Itchmo, Emily and Menusux.

If this was an issue in July, why does it appear on the FDA Enforcement Report for December 5th?

Also, were these products included in a previous recall?
