When four golfers went to the Heron Point Golf Course in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, the last thing they thought they would be doing would be rescuing a dog from an alligator. But that’s what they did.
The men saw a blonde Labrador retriever coming over one of the mounds on the golf course. He looked thirsty and tired and sat down to take a rest by the edge of a lagoon.
But then the golfers saw something that stopped them right in their tracks — an alligator. One of the golfers said, “the biggest, ugliest gator you’ve ever seen was 20 feet from the dog, coming right at it.”
The alligator was only three feet away from the dog. And the golfers quickly stepped in to save him.
One golfer grabbed the dog’s collar to pull him out of harm’s way, another stood holding his pitching wedge to strike if needed, and another one was yelling and waving the flag stick to scare the alligator.
Fortunately, they were able to get the dog up the bank, and for some odd reason, the alligator stopped several feet away from the dog. Thankfully, the golfer didn’t have to see how his pitching wedge would hold up against an alligator.
The golfers loaded the dog onto the golf cart. The owner was called and came to retrieve the rescued Labrador.
One golfer said, “All I could think is, I don’t want to see this happen. We had an overriding desire to save a life.”
