the best thing we could change is writing letters to th govornment to make it illegal to not get your pets spayed and nutered with a fine of 5,000 dollars or something.

Regarding avoiding and delaying spay/neutering:

petslave said: "to those that want their children to witness the miracle of birth–take them to the euthansia room at you local shelter & also let them witness the miracle of death"

Excellent suggestion!!

Thanks to Amy, Traci, and mittens for the support and especially for sharing your experiences of a similar nature.

It's the trust issue that hurt ... I'm sure she had trusted those that abandonded her and they let her down ...then she thought she could trust me...and I crammed her into a carrier as she demonstrated she wanted to flee. I can't even imagine what she thought about that nor what happened to her at the vet's...in the "spay-while-you wait" clinic.

I do feel better, thanks again for your posts. :)

besides fostering and sponsoring- in just about every community there are low cost spay and neuter programs. you can get coupons for low cost fixing surgery from 'Friends of Animals ' and they can direct you to low cost programs in your area. . we have a ' spayin' wagon' that goes around the city here. tell people about it. i have found that people are quite receptive- if you give them the materials or email them a link with everything spelled out for them.

If you can't foster a pet, you can sponsor one at a local shelter. You give them a donation to sponsor a particular animal.

I posted this a few days ago on another blog entry here, just cutting and pasting my comment:

People can help out by fostering the kittens that come into the shelters (until they are old enough for spay & neuter and for adoption).

Many shelters/rescues will provide the food, litter and vet care also; so, all you may need to provide is the safe space for them and the affection/interaction.

Besides, they’re so cute and you’ll feel so glad to have done it. :)

martha- i had 2 semi feral cats who sort of didn't like me yet anyway fixed at once and they absolutely loathed me for about 2 days.

that was 10 years ago. both have spent the years since the fixing following me around like puppies and sleeping next to my head every night. female cats can get all sorts of tumours and serious medical problems associated with not being fixed. she will get over it. give her time and stop beating yourself up.

i also got an older female who was my only cat for years fixed late in her life. she was devoted to me. and after a few days of hating me she was her old self and back to loving me. i saved her life by having her fixed-she had masses of tumours on her uterus. they were so unique the doctor saved them. they would have killed her. she lived for 10 more happy years dying of old age -over 20 years old.

you did the right thing although it is very hard to see them after any vet experience that's invasive in particular.

Give her time and space and little steps. I had a semi-feral adopted (along with my tame adopted) that I had to give pill antibiotics to which were chased with 6ccs of water (during December).

Both hated it although my semi-feral was more submissive about taking them. Between the chasing them down for meds, though, my semi-feral began to retreat from the trust and affection she had gradually been building and going back to keeping good distance and being "a blur."

She is now back to the level of trust and affection she was at (before the meds) and way beyond it--to maybe being the lap kitty I hope she will be by the end of the year. But it took a good month after the meds stopped for her to start coming around again.

Good luck, I am optimistic for you and kitty.

Tho I have lived with many pets over my adult years, I always brought them into my life.

This year an abandonded kitty adopted me not long before she had kittens. She is very small and so are her kittens, however I was worried about new males hanging around already, the kitties just turned 2 months old this week, so I took her to be spayed yesterday. It had to be the most horrid experience of her young life. I went to pick her up at the pick-up time and she had not even had her operation yet...but they did it while I waited and let me bring her on home.

???

Today she hates me. I am so sad. It's so different than all the other times for other pets that were spayed/neutered over the years.

She completely trusted me. Now she doesn't.

perhaps global warming is also the excuse for the pet food poisoning. perhaps al gore can be an expert witness for Menu Food's defence.

i believe he invented the internet and the earth's climate.it's rumoured he also invented cats.

This just came up on a Portland, OR news website. Since I live near Portland, it makes the original article hit home even more.

OHS: Kennels Are Full

PORTLAND - Oregon's largest animal shelter is stretched to the limit, with officials calling on anyone who is thinking about adopting an animal to step forward.

The director of operations for the Oregon Humane Society says about every kennel in the shelter is full. Susan Mentley says that means there is almost no space left for new arrivals.

The lack of space puts a particular strain on other shelters, as OHS takes in more than 2,000 animals each year from shelters throughout the region.

Nearly 300 animals are now available for adoption at the OHS, including 176 cats and 91 dogs. Just last month, 400 cats arrived at the shelter, with that number expected to go up dramatically as the number of newborn kittens skyrockets in the summer months.
