Southern California has had a strange summer. It is just now finally getting hot. We probably can expect it to stay hot for another couple months.

Do you have a small dog that you walk? On concrete or asphalt or other pavements or surfaces. Keep in mind that much heat radiates from these surfaces, so small pets are very likely to be affected by them.

With this in mind, it's really important for people EVERYWHERE to remember that during hot weather nothing livng and breathing should be left in a vehicle in the shade, with windows cracked. It doesn't take very high temperatures to cause brain damage and death. Leave your pets home in a shaded area or indoors.

Also, dogs perspire from the pads of their feet. Dogs with lots of "foot hair" should have this hair trimmed [including in between the pads]. Cuts down on fungus infections, too.

In the hot and humid weather, even swimming works up body heat. A wet dog has a tougher time cooling down than a dry coated dog. The wet coat holds the hair against the skin and prevents air flow. After a swim, be sure dog is dried well. And, a dog laying in a pool in the hot sun needs to be watched too.

I wish EVERY dog owner was acutely aware of the hot temperature effect on pets, esp. when they are left inside a car! God only knows how many ignorant pet owners are out there.

My Rufus loves to lay down up to his neck in the lakes and ponds and creeks that we can get to and that I deem clean enough. At the numerous lakes, Rufus and I and Patches (the puppy) enjoy swimming together and playing fetch and keep away, swimming after the Tennis ball or Floppy Disc in the 90 plus degree weather! That is the ultimate natural cool down after a too hot run in the sweltering dog park! My doggies look so forward to our swims.
