I lost a cat in 2004 he got sick and I never knew why. I would bet that the food he ate was bad. It was a prescription food for over weight cats. I wished I would have never given it to him. I use eagle pack hollistic canned chicken for my dog. I also cook 1/2 of her food and I am thinking of cooking all of it. I don't trust any of them. I would not buy from a big store. Go into a small specialty store and make sure there is no wheat, rice or glutens in the food. wheat and rice and gluttens are cheap fillers. we have to inform ourselves our goverment doesn't seem to care. make calls to the company you choose to buy your food from. eagle Pack doesn't use or keep wheat or gluttens on the property it is a cheap filler. Be carful and try to find products made in the USA. Big companies make millions and buy cheap ingredients from china and kill us and our pets and what it being done. I still see people buying menu foods and wal-mart food old yellar, old Roy and Iams its all menu food, science diet too. Be carful everyone.

IMO if you want to see them scramble start sending human food into be tested. I am thinking something common to both the pet food and human food. I think I hear the pitter patter now…..

That is in the works now and this cover up by the FDA is going to be uncovered for the entire world to see. Journalists from across the pond are interested in spreading the story and already onboard.

5CatMom Those would work or how about wheat flour since that is what they say was the wheat gluten actually was. I believe that is what they said the rice protein also was. Do I have that right? Anyone? And actually you can buy wheat gluten next to the flour and baking items. Some put it in homemade bread.

I think I remember that 30 % of acetometimphenm is manufactured in China. But...why is that? Why is it not cheaper to make it here in the US?

Julina: I am so sorry about your pet Isis, the same thing happened to my pet. I suspect that it was unrecalled dry food but not Purina but IAM's.

Her liver started to shut down and her red blood cells were damaged too. This happened days before the recalls and my Vet didn't know what happened to her either. She just said it was poison. I don't know what happened either.

From websites I have read aminopterin and acetaminophen can cause liver damage and damage red blood cells, cause bloody stools, bloody urine, bloating jaundice, extreme pain and other symptoms

So at this point its a toss up since both have been found in pet food.

I remember when all this started that the FDA redacted a fifth ingredient and to this date I don't know if they ever came clean with a clear answer.

Does any one remember what it was? Maybe I miss it.....

Anonymous,

Good idea. Something like a can of Campbell's Beef Broth (hydrolyzed wheat gluten) or Cream of Mushroom Soup (soy protein concentrate). I have a couple of old cans from last year that I'm saving.

When I called Campbell's, they said not to worry - their wheat gluten comes from the Netherlands, but they didn't know if it was manufactured in the Netherlands, or just passed through.

One of the initial reports from the FDA (before they decided the "gluten" came from ChemNutra) was that it may have come from the Netherlands.

My dog died from eating Purina Pet Food bought at Pets Mart. She had always eaten ONLY Purina dry food and was a healthy indoor Lab Mix. The Vet was confused because the only thing being reported was that wet food had made the pets get renal failure and the her tests showed her liver was not operating, it was shutting down. She had jaundice and he suspected anemia. Her blood count was way off and something was killing her red blood cells. We did what we could put she was too far gone and had to be euthanized. This thing played out so horrible. It seems that the only ones who could have helped the Vets, were in the dark too. I know that high levels of acetominophen can cause liver damage. It says right on the box of most bottles anyone of us would pick up at the drugstore that it can cause liver damage. I know she died from eating the food. It was only a few days to a week after starting a new bag of food. She had thrown up a few times, was having some diarreah, which was not normal for her, ever. When I finally realized she was sick she was limping weak, had urinated blood and was having breathing problems when she was rushed to the Vet.
She died in May, on 5-12-07, we buried her right before Mother's Day. Her name was "Isis." I hope and pray that her death was not in vain and not only will we get to the bottom of all of this but something will be done about it so that this will never have to happen to all of our children again.

"Isis" My you rest in peace and know that we love you, you will never be forgotten.

It seems like we "de-bunked" that theory (melamine/cyanuric acid)!!! This latest testing better bring about some more answers as I now have many more questions.
At least the packets were unopened, recalled and made animals ill---this should be enough to get something rolling! I hope....

Actually, there is no clear scientific evidence to support the theory that melamine and cyanuric acid combined could cause what happened. The resulting crystals would still be only slightly more toxic than common table salt.

An easy way to visualize the situation is if you found a tenth of a teaspoon of salt in a can of pet food, and the pet died after eating the food, would you assume the pet died from salt? Or that some other, far more toxic substance was involved?

That's been the situation all along. The substances passed off as being the cause of illness and death, couldn't possibly have been responsible because they aren't toxic enough to cause illness and death.

There was no cyanuric acid in the samples that were sent in--the report states that. That is just as important as the aminopterin being found. They had said the melamine and cyanuric acid mixrd is what caused the kidney cyrstals to cause renal failure so how did my cats get sick when no cyanuric acid was found? If that is the theory!
