Authorities raided and shut down a large illegal cockfighting ring in San Diego, California.
After a six-month undercover operation, 50 people were arrested and more than 5,000 birds were seized.
“This is the largest cockfighting ring ever busted up in the United States because of the number of defendants and the number of birds seized,” said San Diego County District Attorney’s spokesman Paul Levikow.
The people that were arrested are charged on suspicion of cockfighting and possession of cockfighting implements. If they are convicted, they will serve one year in jail and fined $5,000.
There may be up to fifty other arrests in connection with the cockfighting ring.
Most of the birds seized from the operation were euthanized by legal injection because they were badly injured.
