Tanya, it's because in rape, the victim at least gets to live...this puppy lost its life. There should be much stronger sentences for both, of course. Rapists should in all fairness be castrated, but the ACLU and other criminal advocates will prevent that idea from ever seeing the light of day. But I do think that animal cruelty should be given the same weight as other violent crimes in the courts. It's all the more heinous because the victims of animal abuse are innocent and don't understand why they are being put through the suffering.

Criminal system ticks me off.

not that this guy doesn't deserve real time, but most rapists will get less than 3 years; dui drivers who KILL someone usually get only 5 years.

we have a very strange world when a rape is less important (at elast as far as punitive damages) than a pet.

Glad he was seen as a criminal, though. cause dog, cat, rat, or human, it's a life that he willingly sacrificed to his anger. His own kid could easily have been the victim.

Thank God someone is standing up for animals. Not only don't I like cruelty against fluffy little dogs and cats, I don't like the way the meat industry puts cows to death either. Just because people want to gnaw on flesh, they stun and skin cows before they're even dead. And chickens? It's absolutely barbaric. I think it's hypocritical to get all sad about cute little domesticated housepets, and then go and let someone else cause horror and suffering to a large, smelly, not-so-cute animal so we can chew flesh. But, at least the judges sentence is a start in the right direction. Animals lives are sacred. If you want to be a consumer part of the killing of animals, a link in that chain, well then, go be a native American on the plains. Or an Inuit. And celebrate the life of the beast, which, after all, was put here by the same means as fluffy little cutie-poo muffin.

The fact is, no matter what WE think fitting punishment would be, this is a tough sentence compared to what most judges dole out (even though it should not be so rare). We should write letters to thank this judge, not criticize him. I think the judges who take steps in the *right direction* should be praised. Otherwise, they will get the idea that the animal advocates aren't happy with anything short of blood, and since they can't do that, they might stop issuing sentences even this tough. I think some positive reinforcement is in order.

I personally like the "eye for an eye" sentence. Just think of the tax dollars saved.

Hopefully he will make some "very good friends" in jail, if you know what I mean. Even prisoners love animals.

Hopefully karma will take care of this killer and another killer will bash in his head in prison and he will die of head injuries. Now that would be justice.

I think throwing him off a twentieth storey balcony would be excessive, a tenth storey balcony would be more appropriate, and more to the point than anger management classes. With his current sentence, since he's likely to be out of prison before too long, he should also have a lifetime ban against having a girlfriend, and not be permitted to go above the first floor of any building in future. That, and handcuffing him into a wheel chair for the rest of his life would be more likely to ensure that he doesn't throw anyone off a balcony in future.
