Manna Pro Recalls Young Animal Feed

It’s not known if this is related to the melamine recalls, but Manna Pro is asking their customers to discard their Uni-Milk milk replacement product for young animals. Ingredient list does include soy protein isolate.

This recall was announced March 30 and is not listed on the FDA site.

(Thanks Ginger)

Full release after the jump.

Manna Pro has a heritage of quality and takes pride in maintaining the highest quality standards
for the products it produces and sells under the Manna Pro brand name.

Very recently, a few customers have reported that, when mixed with water, the Unimilk they
purchased turns light grey in color rather than the characteristic creamy white. As we have
investigated these consumer calls, we have identified that a single batch of Unimilk is affected
by this issue.

This was reported by another source (they believe there is contaminated gluten as a protein source - wonder if any testing is being done.)

  2. Bichon Mom says:

I recived this alert just a few minutes ago, via e-mail …

I am sorry this is so long, but felt it important for those out there who breed/raise kittens and puppies. Please read immediately!

    URGENT BREEDER ALERT

BEWARE PUPPY MILK REPLACERS AND WEANING FORMULA

by Robert Jay Russell, Ph.D., Coton de Tulear Club of America President
    CotonNews@aol. com
    www.CotonClub. com

April 26th, 2007. I was monitoring a livestock email list today when I noticed a post by one of the members who was looking for milk replacer for her kids (goats). She wrote:

Recently I had some kids born and mother refused them. Not having
enough milk from mother to feed these kids I went to Milk Replacer. I usually use Land-O-Lakes Kid Milk Replacer but could not find any anywhere. I went to Tractor Supply Company (TSC) and purchased two 10# bags of MannaPro UNIMILK. I have since lost one kid. I happened to be talking to a friend in Indiana about what happened and she asked me what replacer I was using, so I told her…This is when I found out that brand had a RECALL notice. I searched through the information and found that INDEED the bags I purchased were part of that recall. I Called the TSC store and they had no idea anything had a recall on it. I printed the info out and the next day I took everything into the store to prove to them. The recall has been in place since 3-30-07. All the Unimilk was still on the shelf, not taking my word for it. I showed the manager the
printout and he searched the TSC website and found no alerts. He
said he would give me my money back for both bags but he couldn’t do
anything about the kid. Yesterday I stopped at a friends house and
found they she was using UNIMILK for a calf… She got it at TSC
about 2 weeks ago. Why wasn’t TSC informed? And then when they
were? Why didn’t they do anything about it?

    Dr. Russell continues:

I went on the Manna Pro corporation web site today and had a very difficult time finding a tiny button which stated “Information about Manna Pro Milk Replacer” (nothing about “Alert” or “Recall” or Danger”). This is what that MannaPro information page stated:

    Updated 3/30/2007″

    Dr. Russell continues:

Note that the MannaPro recall mentions nothing about poisoned gluten nor does it mention any report to the FDA. However, it is reasonable to suggest that this company may be quietly attempting to cover up another case of Chinese gluten/protein concentrate melamine poisoning. Manna Pro makes livestock feed for farmers AND inexpensive pet food most often sold at farm supply stores (but note: The Tractor Supply Company is located in suburban and even urban areas throughout the US and is popular with suburbanites, not just farmers).

What is significant here is the penetration of possible highly toxic food into the category of “Milk Replacer” and “Weaning Formula” for dogs and cats. Many CTCA Code of Ethics Breeders and others use milk replacers and weaning formulae routinely, often as a bridge between mother’s milk and puppy food at weaning time. So BEWARE!!! Check ingredient lists carefully.

AN ALTERNATIVE: you need not use a commercial weaning formula. Instead, blend milk with some finely blended puppy food or dog food that you’ve checked to make sure is NOT on any recall list and does NOT contain grain products (rice, corn, wheat, soy). This, in fact, is probably a far better formulae for weaning and milk replacement.

AND EVERYONE: check ingredient lists with care. Even milk replacers may contain protein concentrates, grain powders or glutens!

This crisis is far from over.

  3. YaYa says:

And Now the Agriculture World is Involved!

Well this is Just wonderful! Thank Goodness I called about my Horse *Feed* back in March and was assured ALL products from ground to bag are USA Made. Grown to Mill to Shelf. I use Kent Feeds.

BUT I’ve bought {in the past} and friends buy Manna Pro Horse Treats.

In Feb. I went back home for one of my trips and purchased Farm and Fleets Horse Treats 2 5lbs. bags.
    {can’t get F&F where I am now}

In March I also called Farm and Fleet and was assured that the Product was USA made. BUT I am going to call Farm and Fleet again about “their” own brand pet/Ag. foods and treats AGAIN!

Shoot, I hope I’ve got the bags out in my truck and not out to the barn. It’s late and I need to hit the rack. I just have this feeling…I’ve not opened the F&F Treats Yet tho.

But Manna Pro?! It’s a Good Company. This gets more Sad every day.

    It never crossed my mind. {haven’t given her any for some time and know the bags have been kept cold for months}
I need to find out WHAT the Manna Pro Treats are made of anyway and despite!

At least my horse Loves Carrots More than “treats” from the bags :-D So she gets carrots more often.

I DO feel good about her Feed tho, and Totally trust them {Kent Feeds}. I’m Glad I called back in March and “asked the questions”…The answers were: Local farmers, local mills, local distributors, etc.

BUT, All those orphaned babies getting GARBAGE now!

    I’m Disgusted!

I’m calling the local Feed and Supply places to check on their knowledge about this UniMilk stuff tomorrow.
Tell them to get it OUT of the tores Pronto!

Obviously the Reps are not getting the word out!!!!!!!

Now THAT Really Ticks me OFF!

I’ll cuss em’ just for that, if I find the stuff on shelves in stores in This area!

OH MY Gosh! This is SOY! SOY! SOY!

It’s Used In, BABY FORMULAS!!!!!!!!!!!!! HUMAN BABIES!

    Oh Lordy…Can’t be…calm down…take a Breath.

THAT should have Struck me First!

    {tho I don’t have any ‘babies’} :-D

This is VERY Scary! All I’ve heard is FOOD GRADE.

Tell me they’ve checked Baby Formulas, wouldn’t there have been symptoms by now, showing up?

    Ugh. I just Feel SICK!

  4. E. Hamilton says:

The symptoms of kidney damage may take a long time to show up. The baby formula may very well have been poisoned for a long time. A lot of food was,
kidney failure rates have been rising for around 12 years that I know of and no one could figure out why, so that is maybe one mystery solved.
The dying and sickness may have just started with our pets.
Expect the bad news to continue for a while.
It was not tainted food, it was not contaminated food, it was poison by the metric ton and it has been pouring in for years.

And no one would know if not for a bunch of crazy pet owners.

  5. Bichon Mom says:

YaYa, regarding what the Manna Pro treats are made of … the website for Manna Pro is here:

    http://www.mannapro.com/

There are links to all products and there is a small link to click on for “ingredients” for each product, once you get to that product’s page.

And I noticed that on the main Manna Pro page, that tiny button (to which Dr. Russell refers, in the e-mail I copied above) is right on the top of the home page … it says “Click here for information on Unimilk”. That takes you to the page about the Milk Replacer and weaning formula recall.

And remember, this Manna Pro recall could indeed be something unrelated to the Chinese ingredient-related recalls. (anyway, we can hope!)

  8. Cynthia says:

This situation is getting worse and there doesn’t seem to be an end in site.

I feel that the only way you can protect your pets and yourself is to buy 100% organic and make your own pet food.

Don’t allow yourself to be brainwashed by pet food manufactures, the media and veterinarians who sell pet food into believing that you can’t provide your pet with the nutrients it needs. I would be very careful in choosing a pet supplement. Check with the company to make sue they don’t source their ingredients from China.

If you have health problems that prevent you from making your own pet food, there is one brand that appears to be a safe choice, Check out Evangers pet food… http://www.evangersdogfood.com.....sion1.html

Evangers is a small company that has their own plant. They use human USDA grade food that you can actually eat! The suppliments they use is made in the US. Evangers told me that they do not source any of their ingredients from China.

  9. Deb G. says:

I just watched a 30sec. report on CNN headline news (that’s the most I’ve seen in days) which ended with “the FDA has determined this past weekend that this is not harmful to humans”. I am soooo depressed. Our media (especially TV) has totally let us down. I worked in radio for 15yrs. and recently spoke to the owner of the stations I worked for. He said the last 3yrs. have been the worst. They are controlled and we are seeing it with this issue more and more each day. I have written to all of them over and over during the past several weeks. I am so dissapointed in them, our govt. these greedy corporation, CHINA….We are living in a world of greed, lies to feed the greed, and feed God knows what to our pets, and now us. But it’s “OK” says the FDA. Don’t worry, eat the tainted food, it won’t harm you. Thank you itchmo for without this site there would be many more harmed, although I’m afraid the main stream media is covering this up, so far, successfully. I pray God will help us learn to finds ways to survive in a country that is out of control. Itchmo is a huge help in this fight to survive! Thank for all for sharing this important info. here, it has helped me tremendously (and of course my little Poofy, my Shih tzu).

  10. Diane says:

Does anybody know if this has hit the horse feed… I have a mare that foundered last August I wonder if this has gone back that far….

  11. Jan Hoadley says:

TSC **DID** have a recall of Unimilk. It WAS removed from the shelves and the stores WERE aware of it. There were signs posted in the stores available through the company site about it. If the individual store didn’t do it that’s unfortunate - but there absolutely was milk pulled from the shelves as well as some dog food that was affected. There is restocked Unimilk on the shelf that is not the affected dates - recall isn’t forever. It’s been a few weeks since the stuff was pulled and the notice appeared in it’s place. It no longer appears due to assurances it was an issue only in that set of bags - but if ANYTHING appears different than normal take it back. Don’t feed it. There’s also other brands of milk replacer - a little higher cost - and unfortunately most people go for cost alone and even when there’s an issue won’t buy the stuff that’s $5 more.
TSC has a guarantee on their feed - if it doesn’t look right take it back. When a replacer turns an odd color it was the customers decision to use it anyway. :-( Sadly there have been animal deaths because of it.

  12. Bonni says:

Cynthia, Canidae canned food is also made at Evangers w/human grade ingredients.

  13. Gloria Picchetti says:

Do we not still have a couple farms left in Illinois and Iowa? Is the entire United States of America completely covered sea to shining sea in Seven Elevens and Wal Mart?
I encourage free trade but we forgot ourselves and our land. Please let us get on the right track, natural and organic. Why are all the bees dieing?
When China cleans up it’s act it can play with the big kids but it needs a time out for it’s pollution and abuse of people and animals.

  14. alabelreader says:

I was going to post yesterday, Aquaculture has also been affected in Canada. Soy. No recalls on fish products that I am aware of.

Most farm fish, trout, salmon, and who knows what else eat soy protein
in the form of pellets. I read, but cannot remember where, possibly
on this site somewhere that a shipment of tainted soy protein was traced
to at least one Aquaculture farm.

Face it, most livestock have probably eaten this stuff, authorities are of the opinion that the meat will be fine for human consumption.

  15. alabelreader says:

what I want to know is.

When testing the proteins, how often, did they find cyanuric acid?

Wasn’t it the combinationn of cyanuric acid and the melamine that
causes the crystals to form in animals kidneys?

I broke down and cooked for my six dogs yesterday……..’spot stew’
they loved it, I teared up and said here is some real food…….stools
were great this morning………( my big concern) it was not that hard
and I know they got good organic stuff. It was not expensive either.

I wonder what organic chickens are fed tho……………….

  16. Maddy says:

Deb-I’ve also been really depressed. I keep waiting for TV or radio to pick up the stories. Last night I checked on of all the network local news channels- none of them mentioned anything about the “China’s open secret.” One local station’s lead story was the rising # of cavities in children. While listening to the radio this morning for any news, I heard an apt quote: “cause when they own the information, oh they can bend it all they want.”- Waiting for the World to Change. They don’t care. Only animal people care. My vet still things that only 18 animals have died.
How can he be so blind?

  17. YaYa says:

I know TSC is a Good company, have them round here too. But the article printed above, just shows, as with the Grocery store chains with recalled foods Still on their shelves, It Happens.

The woman found the Milk replacer On the shelf After the Recall.

There are Hundreds and hundreds of Independent Feed Stores, Everywhere. And other Small Chain Farm supply store around, Everywhere.

And when there “kids” {and most have Great Farm family kids working in them} but KIDS, stocking {and UN-stocking} the shelves; this is why we find recalled ’stuff’ on the shelves Yet.

They don’t SEE the Issue and it’s Importance. It’s not a Big Deal, unless it’s personal in many cases.

WELL This is Getting Even More Personal for Me.

I Can Not Afford to have a Sick Horse! And it’s Breeding AND Birthing time; and the Pet Food Recall
was/Is in the Height of the Ag World “baby” time.

Tainted Soy Milk Replacer NOW Just Got My Attention!!!

IF We All just sit back and say well we/they sent out the Warnings and its up to the customer to ‘Notice” anything strange…W-E-L-L, THAT is part of What’s wrong with the Whole ISSUE!

Companies say “we did our part”.

I’d No-more depend on a 2nd Or 3rd Party to Cover my 6 than believe there is water on the Moon!!!

    At Least HERE at Itchmo We Help Each other and watch-out for the REST of the Animal World! {and Petconnection etc}

I Pesonally Could NOT take Anything like this happening to My HORSE!

Nor could I stand to watch a Friend and their Horse go through what’s happened to/in the Small pet world right now!

I’m going to Call and Do What Ever I can for Myself and those who Don’t have a Clue!

Where Ever the TSC store is that the “Goat Lady” found the Milk Replacer In…the Manna Pro REP should be walking IN there and making Sure the Stuff is OFF THE SHELVES!

Horse Breeders spend Tons to Breed for foals. I’d hate to see a baby NOT get the Nutrition it needs if there was a Problem with the mare-momma Due to someone saying…it’s up to me/them to notice an Off COLOR of the Milk!

UniMilk is used for Puppies, kittens, kids, foals, calves etc. Whether is On the label or not. All of them are.

This story sounds just like the Chinese Babies who died of Starvation, while drinking Milk that was Made of Chalk and Water!

Babies Do Not Starve Over NIGHT!

SO I”M gonna do My neighbors a Favor and CALL around and Call MannaPro and my Own Farm supply company fav. and simply ASK.

I’m Not going to put my Whole trust into STORES doing the Removal jobs.

And that is Not necessarily a Bad reflection upon ANY particular Brand of Store!

It’s Just due to Howthings are in this Da and Age and I am covering My Butt and Others as much as Possible!

Sorry. I got a little pumped up here BUT Gees.

The Whole Idea HERE is to Make Sure Folks KNOW!
We are Trying to be Pro-Active as Much as Possible!
    Not Reactive.

That ANY TAINTED FOODS Or RECALLED Foods ARE: G-O-N-E! Period!

    Am I Right??????

    If I’m Wrong Tell me.

  18. YaYa says:

Has anyone tried to make bigger batches of Home-made food in Crock-pots here? It might help cut down on time. Then bag it up “per serving” and freeze it. There are 6 quart and even 8 quart sized Crock-pots.

Makes a Heck of a Batch of Stew and chili! :-D

  19. YaYa says:

BichonMom Thanks for the Links! Made things faster for me.

The Apple nuggets and Apple Wafers are HUGE Sellers and the Favorites of most Horses Everywhere. Followed by the Peppermint nuggets.

Thing is the Apple Wafers come in a 20LBS bag and are Not cheap either :-)

IF and I’m saying IF…there wee a problem with say the Treats, it might be hard to “See” it. As we just give Treats a few a day or week. Depends on how much you Luv yer Horse :-D hehe

I’m worried if things get In-to sch thing and you’ve got a Pregnant Mare or Cow lets say, or momma Goat etc…
You might not notice a problem with the Mommas.

I read these “chemicals” melamine, amtnoptrin (sp), cynauric acid (sp) etc. Can cause Alterations in DNA.

That’s Exactly what you Do Not want.

    Also…you can’t just drive a Horse In-to a Vet Office! :-D

It’s Spring and Real busy on Farms right now too. Ag Vet. are Swamped.

I wish the Feed/Food companies would Simply Step up and Remove FOODS Period. that would be a serious hard ship.
    But my horse could get by on hay and grasses IF her Food was a Problem. {and I firmly believe it is not}

But this Manna Pro thing Really bothers me.

Ah and then there would be the “dumping” issue. Don’t want to Contaminant the soil or water or get it in Runoff etc. Or it would come right back to Us. Eventually.

Wonder if these Poisons are “accumalative” in tissue/flesh or soil, how they “break-down”?? FDA hasn’t menioned THIS Yet.

  20. MEK says:

Just want to say everyone here deserves 5 stars ***** for your diligence during this recall. You are always at the front of the latest news! Thank you! My question is, are there any blogs that are dealing just with contaminated human foods? Would someone be willing to start one? If not, do we have a list of what foods the prudent buyer would not use? I thought I was safe being an organic vegetarian. Now I doubt the safety of anything. So what DO they feed organic chickens? You know, we have to “care for the caregivers” (that’s us) first. Would like to see exactly where our grains and pantry staples are coming from, and how they are produced. Thanks!

  21. mgm says:

Just a reminder. We should all be hounding our senators and representatives and demanding that they take action regarding regulations for importation of foreign food stuffs. Demand, too, accountability from the FDA. I’m not interested in hearing any more excuses about how overworked the FDA inspectors are. That’s just tough! If FDA needs more money to hire investigators then Congress should be moving FAST to get the finances and overseeing how the money is spent. This is Congress’s job–it’s Americans’ food supply that’s endangered. What is more important than that?!? We’re the ones who pay their salaries and they should be held accountable. MEK, perhaps you could start a Thread In FORUMS Here on Itchmo.
    There is a link on the Homepage for them. And a special ’section’ or the Vigilence on this Whole Issues. Broke into Categories. {ie, one for sick pet costs, a photo Memorial of the deceased pets etc.}

One for Human Foods to Watch out for, would be Great for the Ingredients BUT I must warn you that is an Immense undertaking. :-( Vegan or Organic or Not; this Affect ALL of us Creatures in the USA.

    I say Do It MEK!

    Also, mgm: The Senate Hearings on the Contaminations are OPEN until the 29th? of MAY, so said the Panel Chairman. {or 30 days from the last on last Tuesday}

    ChemNutra and Menu Foods Both, were ordered by the Chair. to provide certain papers for/to the Panel by To-day I believe {1 weeks time} can’t remember the specifics. {of what those papers were–maybe Orders and accounts?, where the other supplies went?}

Maybe take a look at the Committee:
“House Commerce Subcommittee” was last Tuesday. I think there might be, an Agriculture Committee Hearing this week sometime. I believe they are going to discuss this issue too.

I think you can look for them at:

    http://www.congress.gov

    They show schedules. Committees etc.

I mention this because I think it would be Great to Target the folks *Doing* The actual Hearings first {as it’s a time issue this month} Those Reps are there because the want to Do them and be On Them. Tho I don’t know the names of each Individual Rep that are in these Committees.

Just my observations and thoughts. Hope these help.

Sorry I do Not have time to read all the posts today. But may I tell you what my experience is with SOY?

Soy acts like an estrogen in the body. It might be good for menopausal women, BUT it can block the action of the thyroid in the those prone to hypothyroidism accelerating acquiring the disease. (See thyroid problems, p. 271, EATING WELL FOR OPTIMUM HEALTH, by Andrew Weil, MD ) I am hypothyroid and was using soy milk frequently. I developed a goiter which shrunk when I got off the soy.

My daughter who was fed soy based formula for three years got endometriosis at age 21 and has since had her uterus removed.

  25. SmileOnADog says:

I can’t believe this. I shouldn’t be shocked anymore, after the last month plus of recall craziness. I dodged bullets with my dogs, cat and rescue dogs and puppies, and now I’m dodging bullets with my rescue horses/donkey! Unbelievable.

Thank God last year we switched them over to a Natural Horsemanship (Jaime Jackson) system of living, giving them free feed hay, teensy bit of alfalfa (cheating a little with that), and we took them off the sweet feed, senior feed, grain feeds, etc.

But my equines would do cartwheels and even stand on their heads for Manna Pro Apple Wafers.

Now for the absurd — I didn’t think an animal food label could get worse than the ones for cat and dog food, but it does:

Manna-Pro Apple Wafer Ingredients: (first 3)

“Processed grain by products, grain products, plant protein products”

Could it get any more ambiguous? How can a person look for a specific ingredient in an emergency when they’re lumped together like that?

It’s like the label depends on people not bothering to read it in the first place. I know Apple Wafers aren’t being recalled like Uni-Milk, but I’m going to be proactive and cautious. Like the pet food recall, the wave hits and then could ripple outward to other feed products.

Also scary about contaminants getting into equine feed is colic, which of course in horses can be lethal, and the fact that digestion (food) issues can affect the hoof and laminae. Laminitis and Founder can not only do permanent damage, but also cause the kind of pain that puts an equine down.

I haven’t been feeding apple wafers much the last year, not after seeing the Lipizzaner show : ). My horses now get occassional sugar cubes. And carrots and apples, always.

My prayers are with all hoofed-animal parents and their weanlings, foals, kids, etc. It’s bad across the board already for the animals, but it’s a different kind of painful when the animal *babies* get sick, too.

    PET FOOD LABELS:
sorry if this is a repeat of info… read the earlier posts… and remembered: i learned recently via itchmo or thepetfoodlist.com/forums, as i understood it, that pet food companies (and who knows what other companies) only have to use ingredients listed on the label for a limited amount of time thru out the year (something like 3-6 months).

the rest of the time they can put whatever they want in our pet food…

does anyone have any info on this?

even more reason to go homemade.

    WHOLE FOODS:
I went to whole foods last night and laughed at their new display of ground raw pet food. they have a new huge container packed full with packages of frozen ground meat (and bones?? have gotten different answers re. bone content). ingredients show: chicken backs, turkey backs, lamb, veal

one of my kitties loves it.

SUPPLEMENT FOR RAW 4 CAT WITH CRF
i just need to find a supplement to add to complete nutrients for him and his crf. i’m hoping to find one that contains everything like frazier’s. i know many recipes have you add each separately.

i like frazier’s vita-mineral mix but it just seems too high in phosphorus for crf. i’m asking everywhere, including feline-crf support groups. (there are several in yahoo.)

Founder has a few “opinions” as to causes. ONE being “toxic” chemistry in that part of the horses leg.

I’ve even read ‘Too Rich’ grasses and/or alphalfa especially after, a Good growing season, could be a cause. It becomes Toxic to the horse and it can Founder. {become crippled} You won’t see a 3 legged horse :-(

Just a quick note for panicked horse people… I never fed my horse “horse treats”. All my horses (and the other lucky horses in the stables I boarded at) LOVED Archway Ginger Snap cookies (human cookies), and the cheap sunbelt oats and honey granola bars (also for humans). Just an idea as a treat alternative. I can vouch for both, my horse loved them. Other ideas… Baby carrots (come pre-peeled in little bags in the grocery) make good “training treat” sized treats. Some cereals would work too, like frosted mini-wheats, or other larger-bite-sized cereals.

For the person seeking raw food supplement for a CRF cat, this company makes one specifically for that purpose, it’s on here, but you’ll have to scroll down a way to get to it:

Hey Thanks for the Ginger snaps Idea! My horse loves the Carrots most {thank goodness}. I buy 10lbs. bags almost every week :-D
Two other things she Really like {easy and easy to carry around} are, the red and white Peppermint spin candies and Hall’s Honey lemon cough drops LOL

But the other gals at the Barn are going to have to find something else for the MannaPro Apple Wafers…
Those big ole bags of them :-(
I know they wont want to use them for a good while IF the Milk has/had a problem.

And it’s not that I’m saying that MannaPro has a contamination Problem {yet}…it’s just that, IF I’m using a product of a company that has a Recall…I Do Not use ANY of their products. That’s just me.

And Horse and Colic are a Horrid ordeal. I can imagine Any contaminants, could very well cause it. But especially some odd ball Chemicals like these.

Mine has never had it, {thank Gawd} but I’ve been around one who had…it’s a Horrid Horrid experience. I just could Not Bear to see it again and watch an animal {horse/colt} suffer like that.
Putting the tube down his throat and pouring oil etc…it was so hard to do, I pitched in with the Vet, do to the owner not being able to stand watching. I stayed with the Colt for 2 days…just trying to rub his tummy and let him roll in the sand back and forth… soothe him and talk to him. Hoping his gut would turn. They gave him meds and some shots. But…

    I went home to sleep. They called and told me not to come out later. They’d put him down and he was waiting to be picked up out front. {didn’t want me to see him there}

Just Killed me. He was a Good boy and smart. He was an expensive Arabian. Great breeding. Down the drain.
I’ll never forget Him or the Bad experience. For both/all of us.

So maybe Im a worry wart But…………

My Horse is like a Huge Cat! LOL She plays with me like one. Especially if I put a candy in one of my pockets :-D
I talk to her just like my Cat at home :-)

Thank you, Phaewryn, for the ginger snaps idea. I’m just hoping once we read the label it isn’t made up of problem grains.

Your post made me smile — my equines also like Vanilla Wafer cookies. The label mentions wheat and soy, though.

When we rescued a wild mustang, the only way we could get the wormer into him was to make little Ritz cracker wormer sandwiches. My husband and I crack up every time. The mustang just *loves* Ritz crackers — and, of course, “everything tastes better on a Ritz”. : )

    Yaya,

I’m so sorry to hear about the horse’s colic. How sad. It sounds like you did all you could, and I’d bet the horse knew it. Colic has to be one of a horse owners’ worst fears. I’ve never experienced it myself, and hope I never do. It’s partly why my geldings are on free feed hay, as we live in a sandy state, and sand colic is always a worry.

I have a sweet old (22 yrs) Arabian gelding with laminitis/founder issues, but not due to any feed problems. We saved him from going to slaughter because of it, and we’re using Jaime Jackson’s mustang trim to get his feet back in shape. He’s still about 5 months away from his new hoof capsule being complete, but he’s doing much better. The decades of shoes and high heels just did in his hooves, making them brittle and weak and predisposed him to laminitic issues.

Even if he’s never rideable again, it doesn’t matter to me; he’s my big “dog” and just a dear, dear horse. And yes, *smart* — I have to lock all the gates with a tubular lock because he can open anything!

I love them all, but there’s something about those Arabians — some believe it’s because, back when, the Arabian and its owner would travel the desert for months and only had each other, with the horse and rider even sleeping next to each other, and the bond is now in the horse’s genes.

Add to the above company doubletalk the interesting news that chickens in over thirty poultry processing farms/plants have been fed melamine tainted feed, and processed, and shipped all over the country despite the companies involved knowing full well that their feed contained melamine. I don’t know about you folks out there, but I get the sneaking suspicion that the top dogs in the pet food and human food industry knew full well what the Chinese were putting into their gluten products as far back as the 1990’s because the Chinese themselves were open about the “fact” that they were indeed including melamine in wheat gluten in 1991! The simple truth is that the Chinese have tainted virtually ALL of the pet and human processed food supply over the course of “at least” two decades. The question is “why” did the big north american food chains let this all slip into the business as usual school of thought. You might even begin to wonder if melamine or some other as yet unknown contaminant in Chinese imports is at least a part of the reason for the huge jump in Alzheimers disease in humans over the past few decades. I am not a conspiracy buff, but this is perhaps the most insideous case of widespread food poisoning in the history of mankind to date. And, to put the cherry on top of this fiasco, according to a scientest quoted in the 04/30/07 Sunday edition of the Chicago Tribune, no one in the scientific community has any research whatsoever on how humans react to melamine ingestion simply because the scientests figured there was no way any humans would ever ingest any even a miniscule amount of melamine. Face it folks, if they have done no human reaction research re; melamine, you know they never did any research re: animal reaction to melamine ingestion. If this whole situation does not have you shaking in your boots right now, you have to be soulless. NOT ONLY IS OUR PET FOOD INDUSTRY CONTAMINATED BY MELAMINE (AND LORD KNOWS WHAT ELSE!), BUT SO IS OUR HUMAN FOOD SUPPLY INDUSTRY (HOGS, POULTRY, BEEF (ON TOP OF ALL THE PHARMACEUTICALS THAT WE ALREADY KNOW ARE GIVEN TO ALL CATTLE RAISED FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION), CEREALS, CANNED FOODS, ETC)!

This is all so unbelievable that you would simply laugh it off if it were the plot for a grade B sci-fi flick. But, make no mistake, this is not science fiction.

And if you are worried, think about all those vegetarians out there who have been “religiously” scarfing down wheat, rice, and corn glutens in their meat, egg, and dairy substitutes on a daily basis for years. Turns out that their quests for “optimum health(??) and fitness(??)” may have been little more than digging a deeper grave for them in the long run.

The implications of all this are mind-boggling. The only hope we have of surviving this is if we start forcing the business owners, the global corporations, the gladhanding and smooth talking windbag politicians, and the conniving lobbyists for even more globilization who “slither” everywhere in the halls of local, state, and national government, to STOP THIS POISONING OF OUR PETS, THE ANIMAL POPULATION OF THE WORLD, AND THE HUMAN POPULATION AS WELL! Enough is enough! We are all being led to our graves by people and governments with only one goal in mind…THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR…animals and humanity be damned!

Herb, actually there has been animal testing done with melamine, probably to make sure that all the melamine used in dishes etc were safe to use. They determined that it was not that toxic to rats at certain levels, hence the confusion about why it is killing animals now. Probably has something to do with the processes used to manufacture the foods and the release of other chemcals in the breakdown of the melamine…bacteria actually plays a role in the breakdown of melamine as well and this could possibly be another factor as toxins.

FINALLY! Got Hold of MANNA-PRO Corp.

I could not get through on the Recall 866# yesterday or today. Went and got the land line and Corp. 800# {different than the Recall 800#} instead of using the “published” one.

Steve in the Nutrition Dept., said to my First question: What were the Results of the testing on the UniMilk Milk Replacement product??

“We’ve done many many tests and still have Not found out anything yet”
I asked him if they were going to continue until they Find “Something”, he said they would continue testing.

I asked if All elements in their “recipe” for UniMilk were IN the recalled product. He said Yes. So nothing was “missing” from the “recipe”? “No, nothing was missing.”

I asked, So so far Nothing ADDED to their recipe has been found in the testing so far? No thing Added has been found. Nothing to cause the discoloration of the product or anything to cause any of problems/complaints with the animals, who received the UniMilk product. Yet? No not yet.

He said some had No problems with the product some did.

I said, seems that is the same sort of problem the Pet Foods are showing too, with the contaminants they’ve found. Some got sick, some did not, Some died.

I asked if they’ve tested OTHER MannaPro Products. ie, Equine, goats, calf, poultry, etc., He said, Yes with no problems found.

I asked if they get Their ingredients from let’s say a 2nd 3rd or 4th party? He said YES they do. But that “they are Not from the same sources as in the Pet Food issue”.

I just passed on my thoughts and opinion about that like this: Well it’s hard to know when you deal with so many parties, as to WHERE *They* get Their supplies, just for example as Wilbur/Ellis= ChemNutra, and others.

I told im I have nothing ‘against’ ManaPro, but would be Very cautius right nw with any Animal products to feed. And for example I don’t usually eat KFC Chicken BUT that I certainly would Not be eating it right now!

Steve was Very Nice and open with me. Did not try to stall me or shut me down.

    He asked if I used UniMilk, I said no, but have friends who raise Goats and other Ag Animals and I have a Horse and have used MannaPro products in the past and have friends who Use MannaPro Equine products Now. {I have not gotten hold of all of them yet about all of this}

I asked if I called back in a Week to check on the Further testing being done, to him, for any Results would that be, Ok?

    He said Yes.

I said for this situatin I am Not pointing fingers. Nor implying that there is a problem.

I Did forget to mention that the Recall 866# was BUSY all the time tho, -Sorry Folks!

HERE are Numbers IF you need/want to call Them, that *Work* for MannaPro: Land Line# 636-681-1700, Toll Free# 800-690-9908.

MannaPro is in Chesterfield, Mo 63005

    Sorry for my typos.

    YaYa,

Thanks so much for your post, the research, calling and for sharing it.

I got on the phone yesterday and called the feed stores in my area and told them about the recall of Uni-milk. They hadn’t known about it. I’m also going to follow-up by dropping off pages of the recall numbers for them, just to be sure.

I don’t know if I missed it somewhere, but are some of the same ingredients tainted in the pet food also in the Uni-Milk? Or, is it that Uni-Milk contains ingredients from the larger, FDA seizure of imported Chinese grain products?

  39. Dawn Turner says:

Maria wrote: “PET FOOD LABELS: the rest of the time they can put whatever they want in our pet food… does anyone have any info on this?”

I didn’t see anyone else address this, Maria, so I wanted to answer your question and concerns. The reality of the situation is that the FDA permits the pet food manufacturers 6 months to change their labels if they change any of the ingredients in pet food. They make this allowance because pet food companies often change “recipes” but have a lot of bags already printed up in stock with the original ingredient list on it. Allows them 6 months to use up their in-stock supply and get bags with the new ingredient list.

The loophole in this is that anytime before that 6 months is over, the company can switch BACK to their original recipe and not ever have to change their labels. Needless to say, this is a HUGE loophole because they pretty much have the freedom to change ingredients without informing customers. For example, from this latest string of recalls: Natural Balance suddenly adding rice by-product to foods they claim don’t include corn, wheat, soy or rice products. They added the rice protein concentrate but did not change either their labels OR their website. As long as they removed that ingredient before 6 months was up, they wouldn’t need to change their labels to reflect the TRUE contents of the bag.

The FDA does a fine job of protecting us and our pets, eh? Between the foods, drugs and vaccines that cause problems and are approved without proper research, it’s a wonder they haven’t allowed us all to be killed, imo.

Anyway, I hope that answers your question about pet food labels. I do NOT know if livestock feed labels are any better or trustworthy, but I have my doubts.

  40. Cynthia says:

Why on earth would anyone want to buy Uni-milk!
It’s LOADED with very TOXIC ingredients!

    Uni-milk http://www.mannapro.com/uni-milk.htm

I listed a few of the ingredients …

BHA, BHT (known as butylated hydroxyanisole) In test animals, BHA has caused cancer in the forestomach. Humans do not have a forestomach, although the cause of any kind of tumors in animals is cause for concern. In test tube studies, BHA has mimicked the hormonal actions of estrogen. Repeated contact with skin may cause irritation and skin allergies/dermatitis.) http://www.aplus-flint-river-r.....?win=small http://www.canine-epilepsy-gua.....of_bha.htm

ETHOXYQUIN - CARCINOGENIC, TOXIC FOOD PRESERVATIVE, ALSO USED AS A PESTICIDE! http://www.customcaninecookies.....yquin.html

PROPYLENE GLYCOL - ANTIFREEZE Propylene glycol is as a humectant, which means it keeps substances from drying out, and it was originally developed as an anti-freeze. Today it’s used in paint, dog food, floor wax, and you guessed it, many deodorants. Propylene glycol is neurotoxin known to cause contact dermatitis, kidney damage, and liver damage. In the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for propylene glycol, the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety warns workers to avoid skin contact with the toxic chemical, and yet millions of people apply it under their arms everyday. From the MSDS: “May cause eye irritation, skin irritation. Chronic exposure can cause gastro-intestinal disturbances, nausea, headache, vomiting, and central nervous depression.”
(The FDA has classified propylene glycol as an additive that is “generally recognized as safe” for use in food. ARE YOU REALLY GOING TO TRUST THE FDA ON THIS?) http://www.acreaturecomfort.co.....etfood.htm

ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS - A single artificial flavoring can be a combination of
hundreds of individual chemicals, many of which are derived from
petroleum. The FDA does not monitor these flavorings nor require that they be tested. Even when testing is done, however, it may be ignored. Vanillin, for example, continues to be listed as GRAS despite its ability to inhibit the liver enzyme dopamine sulphotransferase by 50%. Other flavorings affect RNA, thyroid, and enzymes (el-Saadany 1991). Most flavorings have never been studied for safety and neurotoxicity. http://www.feingold.org/color.html
