Recall Expansion: Menu Foods Adds Two More to Canadian Recall List

In a press release dated today, Menu Foods has added two more items to their Canadian recall list:

1) Western Family Canada Chicken Cuts/Gravy canned dog food dated December 11, 2009 to March 7, 2010 (624g)

2) Western Family Canada Chunks of Chicken/Gravy canned cat food dated December 11, 2009 to March 7, 2010 (374g)

Menu Foods said that these two items should have been added to their recall expansion on May 2 and just recently noticed that they were omitted.

The full press release after the jump.

(Thanks Robert)

TORONTO, ONTARIO–(CCNMatthews - May 22, 2007) -

Attention Business/Financial Editors

Menu Foods (TSX:MEW.UN) has previously recalled wet cat and dog food produced with adulterated wheat gluten supplied by ChemNutra Inc. and, on May 2, 2007, recalled a number of additional products due to the possibility of cross contamination. Menu Foods recently noted the omission of two items in Canada, that should have been included in the May 2, 2007 announcement. These products have already been withdrawn from retailers’ shelves.

Accordingly, Menu Foods advises the Canadian public that these two items have been added to the recall list and are shown below. An updated list of the recalled products, including these additions, is available at the Menu Foods website at

menu foods simply has no credibility whatsoever. with best buy dates this far ahead, i think it was manufactured very recently, a problem was encountered, and rather than expose the fact that contaminants are still being used in manufacture, some dim bulb came up with the idea that they should say these particular products were inadvertently omitted from a previous recall… as though that is somehow better. i think at this point it’s reasonable to assume that no pet food coming out of menu plants is safe, nor is it likely to be safe in the foreseeable future.

“Any suggestions to what dried dog food is “safe”?”

Suggest you look at the forums on Itchmo where people are sharing their experiences.

Natura makes a range of dog and cat food products and they say they are testing, so that’s good to know.

I like the Innova/EVO dry food that they make. I also feed Wellness SuperMix5 (chicken) to my dogs and have had no problems.

But none of us can say for sure at this time…I add 1/2 cooked meat to their food now.

To Straybaby… ACCOUNTABILITY, INTEGRITY, COMPASSION… you are right, anyone in (a normal) business who does not adhere to some STANDARD would be out of business. This of course, does not apply to large corporations, with deep pockets and $ signs in their eyes. They just spend $1 million in advertising, fooling the public into buying their products again. For myself, I will NEVER buy another Nutro product ever again, nor will I buy any products made by companies who use Menu foods. I don’t care what promises they make, or if they give the food away for free.

This has been an eye opener to me as far as food safety goes. I just hope it becomes an eye opener to the NATION, who can then DEMAND that changes are made. Real Changes! Not just “there’s an election soon” promised changes.

  5. Helen says:

Sidney’s Mom: My research is saying that the dry foods I would be willing to feed a dog are: anything by Natura (Innova, California Natural, etc), Canidae, or Kumpi. I am feeding my cat Innova. Natura is testing all products, every batch for melamine and cyanuric acid. Kumpi is testing all batches for melamine. Both claim all US ingredients (where the heck are they getting their supplements then, and can I get some for me!) No one has complained about Canidae, and Teric had his tested independently, posted here it came up clean. These three companies do not seem to be making any pets sick, athough there have been various complaints about digestive upset. Natura makes all of their dry products themselves. Menu South Dakota makes their canned. Evangers in IL makes the canned Canidae I think. Kumpi has only dry food.

“Here is the latest from Canada Free Press about wheat gluten that wasn’t wheat gluten at all. Now they think it is gmo wheat that is causing the sickness in pets. Check it out, and connect the dots.

If you go to this link be prepared to have your hair stand on end for several days. GMO grains threaten the entire worlds food supply.

  7. JanC says:

I believe cross contamination is just a cover for a multitude of things. The first being that they added those tainted proteins to just about everything because it was cheap & saved them a lot of money rather than adding more expensive proteins. I also think that these manufacturers or copackers, as they are sometimes called, added these ingredients whether or not the recipe called for them. So now they really don’t know what they added it to & what they didn’t thanks to lousy record keeping (or not noting it at all because they weren’t supposed to be adding it).

Basically what I’m saying is that there are probably a lot more tainted foods on the shelves right now because this procedure was so widespread that they all did it. Menu, ANI, Diamond & another one I can’t think of right now (Chenango Vly or whatever that one is) have probably been doing this for a very long time, perhaps without the PF companies’ knowledge, so trying to track it down is a real problem. Buyer beware.

The smart companies out there are those who are testing & distancing themselves because they have never used any of these cheap proteins. Right now we don’t have a lot to choose from. I am using Natura products (Ca Natural) because their products are one of the few I trust right now. I have heard good things about many others but some I can’t find around here (Canidae, Orijen, Fromms, Evangers are some I’ve heard mentioned).

If you want to feel safe, go to the websites & see what they have to say & make your decisions based on that. I’m still only doing about 1/4c dry & the rest home cooked. I may start doing half & half because I feel comfortable with Ca Natural. They have tested all their products & will continue to do so……which is more than I can say for the big companies who have never admitted there was any problem with their food.

Its almost impossibe to put Menu out of business. Since they make almost all of the canned and pouched food in this country, all of the pet foods would go out of business with them Since our government almost always supports business over the good of the American citizen, they will not let it happen. Why do you think the FDA keeps not telling us all that they know? Why do you think this recall is dragging out. They are still trying to keep as much as possible under wraps. Most people don’t even know there are still items being added to the recall. The media is pretty much no longer covering it. Did any of you notice the big beef recall last week. It hardly got a mention in the press.

  9. Newf Mom says:

I got into it at the pet food store. They said my date code was not on THEIR list. Well, who cares? After phoning the manager at home, I got my money back. Also, kept samples in my freezer, just in case.
Because I couldn’t do a smooth transition between food, I found that adding yogourt helped to ease the upset tummies.

  10. Flamin says:

It Looks like they haven’t fulfilled the quota at reducing the animal population enough yet, or making enough money……….

Did you know that the worlds food supply, can not feed man, let alone his pets.

Soon the FDA’s plan on people eating cloned meats, & more GM food will start to sound great!

12/27/06: The FDA announces that eating cloned meat and milk and milk products from cloned dairy cows is completely safe. The FDA also announced its plans to allow the sale of cloned meat and milk products WITHOUT ANY WARNING LABELS OR WRITTEN WARNING OF ANY KIND.

Ohhh yummy, cloned meat. Tastes the same, guaranteed, every time!

  11. Jo says:

How much of the food is made in countries that allow certain products to be put in, then ship the whole product to us that are not supposed to allow that product? I am beginning the think maybe that is why this is happening in the little circle that it is. Just a thought. I need another large bag of dogfood and trying to find one that is safe. Our area doesn’t carry many of the safe foods that have no recalls close to them or the tier of companies that you wade thru to find out who actually makes them. I am very discusted over the lack of media coverage for those non computer folks out there.

  12. Helen says:

Jo, you can ask a pet food or feed store to stock something you want. Lots of them are willing to assist with customer requests. Maybe they won’t do it, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. Some pet stores have changed their whole product lineup over this.

  13. LorieVA says:

I once again PO’d one of my friends yesterday trying to educate her on this whole fiasco, she told me she pays no mind to the whole situation because she feeds her cat Fromms dry and its ORGANIC. I said well that ORGANIC is really not a sure fire answer at the moment that NB and BB were both recalled she told me that those 2 brands were not real ORGANIC whatever that means…………..and that it go at that. She again is one of the woamn with a toddler who would rather talk about going to CHUCK-E_ CHEESE etc………like i really give a crap. LOL ALl this people with kids need to be more concerned its not just in the pet food and that is the part they are not getting. But hey not my problem if they do not want to listen.

  14. Barb, GSD MOM says:

I have been feeding Canidae for several years. Hopefully, after all the recalls are over with I am going to search for a new food. My dogs do not like it, but they will eat it when I put half home cooked in their food. My older dogs were 9 1/2 years old when they passed away. One in December and one in March of this year. You would think german sheps live longer than 9 years old. I don’t think this is a good long term food. Their coats are nice, but it could be from adding salmon, or what ever I have available for them. Every morning when I come to work I worry about another recall……geez. I dread checking my email.

  15. Flamin says:

    Morning Helen & everyone!
I hear you LorieVA. I know a lot of people like that. Some of them will watch the news on the idot box, but if it’s not the top story, they don’t think it’s any big deal. Some have children, some don’t so I don’t think it’s about that. Even some people I met and talk to, besides the pet food disaster, going on in the world like wars, poverty, politics, religion , they don’t seem to care. They seem more concerned about buying a new plasma TV, hot tub, going on a luxury cruise, or who’s going to win on American Idull ! However there are people in tune/spiritually aware to what’s really going on in the world & what’s coming, with or without the internet. I don’t think we need to rely on the FDA/government, or these corrupt businesses to tell us anything. Because they won’t, and if they do, it’s not the entire truth.

If you have the means grow your own food, for your family, and pets. That’s the Real Organic way.

  16. Auntienina says:

I don’t mean to be repetitive because it has been mentioned here before but just look at Menu Foods’ corporate name, ‘Menu Foods Income Fund.’ As they say, it’s all in the name or the name says it all.

  17. Helen says:

Barb GSD mom: A friend used to feed his dog Canidae. Dog was never enthusiatic and needed a treat on top to eat it. He changed to Innova a couple of years ago, and the dog scarfs it before he is done pouring it in the bowl. That is what helped me decide to try Innova for my cat after the Nutro dry issue. Cat scarfs it up too and she is a major fuss budget. She is still not happy about any new wet options.

  18. Helen says:

Hi Flamin, Think we will get any word soon about the bee food tests? I found a real honeybee in my yard yesterday and followed it around for about 20 minutes.

  19. Barb, GSD MOM says:

Thanks Helen–I may try Innova. My friend switched from SD to Innova and she said her beagle sucked it down. Her cat is on Evo and she did the same. lol Spoiled rotten kitties & doggies—–Good luck with your spoiled kitty…:o)

  20. Helen says:

Barb GSD MOM: She did eat a can of Nature’s Variety lamb and some partial cans of Evangers. She thinks if she holds out long enough she will get the Fatal Feast again. No go.

  21. Flamin says:

I don’t know Helen, it will take them forever to tell us anything, if at all. I haven’t seen any honey bees around since early last year! Lots of wasps, and hornets, but no honey bees. Been having comp problems, and missed your posts on the melabee thread.

    Keep in touch….

    g2g water the garden…..Have a nice day..

    Except on Fridays…..:(

I’m really starting to hate Fridays. I need a new acronym for TGIF like the FDA!

  22. Flamin says:

    TGIF= Thank God It’s Friday

TGIF = Thank God for Itchmo Forum! :)

    ok, off to the garden…….

  23. angelcatj420 says:

They have got to be kidding!! Menu Foods “JUST NOTICED” those two foods had been omitted from the recall!!! This company needs to be put completely out of business, with the money from the assets going to those people who lost pets because of Menu Foods negligence. I will never buy one of their products again…….if I can help it! It is so darned hard to even find out who manufactures what cat foods. Pet food quality and safety needs to be monitored now and from now on.

  24. Helen says:

TGIF means “Tainted Grains In Food”

  25. Barb, GSD MOM says:

Fatal Feast, as in Fancy Feast? well…my friend here at work feeds her three cats FF. Nope, notta, not going to change. Some people think that I am crazy most of the time telling them about the dog and cat foot crisis.

  26. Helen says:

Barb, GSD MOM: It is too bad that other clueless people who have not lost a pet (or a child) YET cannot learn something from the grief of others. We know we are not crazy.

  27. Cheryl W says:

I fed NB Ultra for several months & then had dogs die abruptly after buying a new bag. I switched directly to EVO & the dogs & cats love it. I did not have any problems getting any of them to eat it. When I put it down for them they went after it like they were starved.

  28. LorieVA says:

No one wants to hear the truth till it is too late.

  29. janet says:

Ummm, hello. Elliot, I believe you mentioned Nature’s Variety can dated to 2008? Were you just saying this as a date thing? I do not recall(uh, bad word) reading that that company had had recalls and their web site said they were not effected by the recall. That was yesterday.

Was this conversation about dating cans in general? I am asking, because the check I did on the website yesterday said they were not involved, but today I tried to double check and their web site is down.

  30. Barb, GSD MOM says:

We’re not crazy at all…well, just a little bit. But, I only try and educate these pet owners and they could care less!

  31. Barb, GSD MOM says:

Cheryl–sorry about your dogs. I have heard good things about Evo.

  32. kellie says:

Funny little off topic kitty story to brighten your day.

Remember I said the two stray kitties in the hood have been getting my kitties rejected foods every evening? Well they are now thanking me in their way. when I went out to retreive the dish and refill it , next to it was a tiny bird egg and the remnants of a dead mouse.

I guess it’s their way to offer something to me in return..How cool is that? How can anyone not like cats? They wont let me pet them and run from me but still show their gratitude for all the quality meals they have been getting for the last week.

  33. elliott says:

Janet - There have been no recalls for Nature’s Variety. We had been discussing the fact that food recalled last night in Canada had expiration date in the year 2010. I thought that 3 years seemed like a long time. We started to advise of other expiration dates of other foods we had in our homes. Guess you could say we were comparison shopping. I feed Nature’s Variety to dogs and cats, and am comfortable with it.

  34. elliott says:

Janet - I should add that the Nature’s Variety I am referring to is the dry.

  35. Jo says:

I live in a very small town of population of 800. Sleepy Town is what we have and a lot of elderly. Our local stores didn’t even post about the recall meaning our Super Walmart. Today, it was all I could do to not spaz out and clear their shelves. I may do it anyway. I have never been in jail so if I have to do a first, it might as well be for our pets. I am working on getting all of the old rebels from the hippy days and have a parade. I do work answering phones for a Vet while he is out of the office and it is so unbelievable how many do not even know there is a problem. Instead of passing urine, there are dogs passing blood, 3 calls in one morning. I am short on time, but will explain our dog/cat world where we live. Quite different than the City Folks as we call them. I married one and he had quite the time. We are in Northwest Oklahoma where life is simple, but great. Anyway, I do have a plan for our 100 year State Birthday Cattle Drive that is part of the festivities. Maybe make the news and get word out if I can get enough oldies like me from the Flower Child Days to join in. I am starting to pass the word as our problem is since there is no coverage in the Daily Oklahoman and if so, searching for it is another trial. Maybe a page 10 with tiny little paragraphs in areas people tend to pass over. Our lifestyle is so quiet and simple, which is awesome, but also maybe too laid back on this type of World Issue. I don’t want to put my boss in a bind as he and his wife are very awesome people who actually have a passion for what they do. They haven’t lost heart even tho they cannot get any rest since we all know where they live and if cannot be reached by phone, just pull into their driveway. If not for him, losing my pup, the 11 days of working very hard to save her would have cost me a fortune. I had to ask him to figure my bill up. He said lets see how it turns out and I am a fair person and he has done many good deeds for my dogs and if not for him and his prices of compassion, I wouldn’t have made a dime when I bred SharPei. He and his wife who have been together since College days have done me very good and teach me so much, so good that if he fired me, I couldn’t say a bad word about either. They truly have kept their heart even tho their charge tickets are sometimes never paid and have made it hard trying to raise 4 kids and putting them thru College. Not many can actually say that about their Vet and I am l lucky to have been asked to hang the Shingle for them when they do their work at the salebarn. Ok, I will explain further later. But, the thing is, they pick their hired hands on how they are with animals and I felt very honored to be asked to work for them. Story continued at a later time….Jo aka lover of all living creatures, except I am scared of anything that doesn’t have fur…even feathered animals freak me out, feathered critters know I am nervous and pick on me and snakes, well I respect them, but just cannot get the nerve to handle them at all. I have tried and once again, they sense my fear or smell it. I can handle dogbites easily, but cats, i don’t understand and they know it, so they pick on me, but if they are overnighters or being boarded, I do my best to give them the TLC and am working on understanding their different personalities, just new to me, but if they ahve needs, I will do whatever is needed even if it is holding them and giving cuddles while they are going to their Rainbow Bridge. Just never had any, but am learning and would give them the best of care, no matter what. Nothing that breathes wants to be alone while dying and I cuddle them and sing or let them look outside and make their journey to the next world with love from this world as not many want to deal with that. I would want someone to do that for my dogs if I couldn’t deal with it. That way they are not alone or scared.
“Thanks Itchmo for keeping us up to date” since the Federal Denial Administration is way behind” on all their recall info and should be held responsible along with our media as if not for your info, I am able to give a way to those who want info to go to this and keep up.

  36. Jo says:

I wish I understood the Cat Attitude better, I am working very hard at it, had every other type of critters when young even wild rescues from Turkey’s that had no mama, Deer that had been injured and even little Cottontails, etc…
I am a country girl raised by a Dad who loved every living creature that needed mended up and that was before rescue org. existed and we saved many and lost a few, but no Vet in those days here and no type of info available then, we just used instinct and of course lots of TLC mixed with giving the will to live. No money from grants, all ours, but our reward was beyond any funding could give us. Early post mentioned being fearful of feathered animals, but the little Turkeys, well they came by name, so I guess it was the only ones I didn’t fear, but age seems to make strange fears come into play, but being attacked by Roosters a couple of times helped a little oon the fear.

  37. Barbara says:

That IS cool! Aren’t they just so sweet. A little thank you gift.

  38. Helen says:

Jo, thank you for telling all that. It must be very hard to be at the vet’s office right now, and just knowing you are in one of those towns that Wally has shut down and no other options are there for people to care for themselves and their pets just makes my blood boil. You are very brave to comfort people’s pets when they can’t bear to watch them die themselves. That must be very hard. I hope you find an answer for what to do about this that helps you. This is just the type of situation that might bring all the fellow Flowers out to help. There are Rainbows when it rains.
