These sobs knew all along that wheat gluten was in these and left them on the market…. By now people have probably used these Nov dated cans. But if not, DON”T THROW THEM AWAY and DON”T SEND THEM TO MENU.

  2. Steve says:

“The FDA will not disclose which manufacturers got the toxic wheat gluten AND to make matters worse, all these organizations and companies have been saying foods not on recall lists are “safe” to feed pets. This is criminal negligence of an unprecedented scale”

  3. Jonathan says:

    Jerks!!

Thats not what I really said but I am trying to make it safe for young people to read.

What I want to know is what about the dry food. Add the FDA to the class action.

Heads better roll on this. Starting with Menu Foods and ending with the FDA. The whole process is one big dysfuctional mess.

It won’t bring our poor pets back, but we need to set an example.

  4. 4lgdfriend says:

new piece on howl911 with a VERy convincing review of how the substances (not)found originated from GMO grains, as I previously suspected and posted. I repeat: What this says is: it’s not just wheat gluten it’s wheat and maybe other grains.

  5. Jonathan says:

Also they expanded the products on the recall list. I didn’t get the exact details but please look at this and post it.

ITCHMO SAYS: It’s posted here: http://www.itchmo.com/read/tre.....n_20070405

  6. elizabeth says:

The “use by” dates are what we usually see printed on the cans. How the h. is anyone supposed to know the date it was manufactured? Is there a code? Many of us are not using any Menu products at all since the original recall but I fear many people still might be since their brands are so ubiquitous. You are right, Steve, Criminal…..and nothing will bring our pets back. Meanwhile lobbyists for a national veterinarian group and pet food industries are out there trying to convince the media that home made food for pets is unhealthy and lacking in nutrients. Un-believable.

Also, don’t know if you noticed but on another Itchmo thread this morning I posted my concerns about the disposition of all the millions of cans of this contaminated stuff. It cannot and must not be treated as garbage. It is toxic waste!.

Just one person’s opinion but, at this point, I don’t trust anyone.

In addition to ChemNutra, the tainted gluten went to other companies that FDA won’t identify. Since there are a handful of contract manufacturing companies that make food for many companies, the problem may be very widespread.

I’m staying away from all the BRANDS, and only feeding the essentials. No treats, no nothing. The smaller scale “natural” companies may be safer, at least they think they are, but many of them also use the contract manufacturing companies.

I’ve talked with many companies this week, large and small, and they are very evasive. They just don’t seem to get it!

To further complicate things, the testing continues, and one BRAND company that I talked with suspects toxins other than melamine.

It’s time for everyone to contact their elected representatives!

  10. 5CatMom says:

Can we identify all the foods that Menu produces? FDA is releasing information drip by drip. Meantime, Menu’s so called “safe” products are still being fed.

Menu’s contract manufacturing practices have apparently caused the contamination of many products.

Not everyone has the bandwidth to follow this debacle blow by blow.

A full disclosure by Menu is needed NOW.

  11. Elizabeth R says:

Pet Food Insitute is a lobbying organization pure and simple- headquartered in Washington D.C. Be assured they are currently working all hours to counterbalance against us with our congressmen and senators who count on lobbyists for “insight” and campaign financing. And don’t delude yourselves—it’s lawmakers from both parties being bought and sold everyday by these lobby firms. If our lawmakers in congress don’t come through for us and the pets of America it will not be that they didn’t hear us. It will be that they chose to listen to “someone” else more. I agree with an earlier commenter; my life also has been changed forever because of this.

Don’t think for a second that the media is not getting this same soft kid glove “informational” treatment from PFI and others, also. The pet food industry seems to have convinced a lot of reporters and editors that this was a little problem being overreacted to by a few crazy pet lovers. Nothing to see here, move along, move along.

  12. A.C. says:

This is absolutely criminal and cannot be allowed to stand. Menu Foods specifically and repeatedly stated its recall dates were reflective of those dates it received shipments of wheat gluten from a new supplier. Now that supplier puts out a recall and Menu Foods has to expand theirs so the dates match!!!!?????? What the hell??!!

Menu Foods executives insult our intelligence and kill our pets with careless impunity. They think they’re safe and secure in their glassed-in towers, but they’re vastly underestimating us. We WILL pull that company down and we WILL put a stop to this kind of horrific negligence.

  13. Ronda says:

The expanded recall date of Nov 8,2006 is one day before ChemNutra reports they started shipping this wheat gluten Nov 9, 2006 (according to their press release). Since they couldn’t possibly have received this batch of wheat gluten prior to it being shipped, Why would that be necessary? Just a safety margin? What for? If all the other products are “safe” as they keep trying to tell us (but it seems to fly right back at them - with all these additional recalls - and it ain’t even Friday yet). Can’t believe it for a second.

  14. 3pits says:

What I do not understand is why people are attacking Menu foods?? They are the first one to identify that there was a problem. And I see people are trying to sue them. What about the companies that left their product on the shelf for 7 to 10 days longer than menu. People be aware that bad news sells and the media is out there for a buck and that is it. The big news is pets dieing but our president can kill thousands of our soldiers for no reason and it never makes the news. What a world we live in. The fact is menu bought wheat gluten and it was tainted. As did numerous other pet food companies. The wheat gluten supplier is the one to point the finger at. There is no way on Gods green earth that companies can test for everything. And why would a company test for melamine?? That is used for ??????? who knows what. There are millions of chemicals out there. Each and every company has to do the right thing. The Chinese do not care about their people why should they care about our pets!!!! This is a slap in the face and then when asked they try to lie!! All products from china should be banned if they do not make this right!! That country had something like 300,000,000 food related illnesses last year. THEY FLAT DO NOT CARE!!

  15. sam says:

Walmart in Hernando Cty Florida, located on Rte 50 has Ol’Roy dog food cans now dated best used 2006. Where are they getting this stuff?

  16. DONNALAKATOS says:

NEAR AS I CAN TELL PEDIGREE IS ABOUT THE ONLY ONE THAT DIDN’T SACRIFICE OU FURRY FAMILY MEMBERS LIFE OR HEALTH TO A HIGHER PROFIT

  17. Rocky says:

    To 3Pits,

Testing raw materials is a complicated process for sure.

However, the fact that Menu is in the pet food business, the fact that the gluten came from China, the fact that GM wheat exists, and the fact that aminopterin has been previously identified as a contaminant should give them A CLUE.

They may not have found the melamine, but they should have found the aminopterin which, in turn, may point to melamine. Also, there is a link between melamine, aminopterin and wheat gluten–It’s the GMO thing again. See link at end of post, a “must read” for everyone.

Companies such as Menu need QUALITY ASSURANCE PROCEDURES which ensure that their manufactured products are safe.

This is negligence, pure and simple.

  18. Anonymous says:

    Back to Rocky,

They may not have found the melamine, but they should have found the aminopterin which, in turn, may point to melamine. THAT IS SO FAR OFF BASE IT IS NOT FUNNY. aminopterin HAS nothing to do with melamine at all. One is used for all kinds of things from getting rid of unwanted babies to rat poison. And how would they go from rat poison to a chemical used to make plastics?? Good lord you need to be more informed before making statements that are WAY of base. Poeple unless you have facts do not post. The confusion is only going to make it worse unless you have another agenda.

Remember it took several labs like weeks before they nailed it down. Including Cornell that put it out in the press about the rat poison which they totally jacked that one up :)

SO I ASK HOW COULD A COMPANY TEST FOR THAT WHEN TONS OF LABS COULD NOT FIGURE IT OUT AFTER THEY KNEW THERE WAS A PROBLEM???

    The answer is NO way!!!

The gluten manufacturer is the only one to blame seeing how like 7 to 10 companies got nailed with the same tainted gluten.

And read about them and then you will really get mad. THEY ARE TRYING TO LIE ABOUT IT..
