Menu Foods was formerly a client of MPG:

"In late 2005, Menu Foods switched away from the US-based MGP Ingredients and signed a 10 year contract with Chem Nutra to take advantage of the lower-priced Asian imports."

MGP INGREDIENTS’ WHEAT GLUTEN NOT LINKED TO MAJOR PET FOOD RECALL March 21, 2007

"Newkirk acknowledged that MGPI has done business with Menu Foods in the past, noting that the company’s last shipment of wheat gluten to Menu occurred over 18 months ago."

"Other ChemNutra clients included Del Monte and Purina."

So they went on record to say that both Del Monte and Purina were dealing with ChemNutra directly, just as Menu Foods was.

LV importer 'totally stunned' by tainted pet food ingredient

"He is also confident that ChemNutra will survive. Menu Foods is the only customer ChemNutra has lost, leaving 17 others.

"The businessman believes the U.S. government will pursue more serious charges against others domestically.

"I don't want to go into details, and I don't want to say "who" may be charged with a crime, Miller said."

So if this is true, Purina and Del Monte remain among those 17 ChemNutra customers--and BTW--we are still waiting for those "more serious charges" to be pressed.

Here's a good article about MPG Ingredients (Atchison, Kansas), the largest US producer of wheat gluten. Last year, domestic gluten was $.65/lb compared to Chinese gluten at $.43/lb.

"People who work for MENU and who are (rightly) worried about losing their jobs should take their concerns and their criticisms to Mr. Henderson.

"I’m sure Mr. Henderson can explain why the PET FOOD RECALL occurred in the USA."

I'm sure he can tell everyone--employees and customers--why Menu stopped buying wheat gluten from their former supplier of it in KS. The ChemNutra/Zuxhou Anying deal was CHEAPER.

That decision which affected one and all was either made or approved by Mr. Henderson.

PILOT-------DO YOU THINK IT WAS ANOTHER COINCIDENCE THAT MENU FOODS DID NOT SEND OUT THE CORRECT CLAIM FORMS TO PET PARENTS UNTIL A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE "NO CONTACT" ORDER??? I HAD BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THEM AND THEY KEPT SAYING BE PATIENT------AND THEY ALSO WERE NOT GIVEN THAT COURT ORDER BECAUSE THEY WERE BEING "NICE" TO AFFECTED PET PARENTS AND THEY DID NOT DISPUTE IT EITHER. DO YOU THINK THEY MADE JUST ONE MISTAKE----HOW ABOUT WAITING AT LEAST 3 WEEKS TO NOTIFY THE FDA AND THEN TO NOT BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE CALLS THAT CAME IN AND THEN IF ONE WAS ABLE TO GET THROUGH TO THE PHONE LINE, I CAN TELL YOU FIRST HAND HOW RUDELY I WAS TREATED AND THE PERSON DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO KNOW MY NAME---SHE ONLY COULD CONFIRM THAT THE FOOD I WAS FEEDING MY ARF CATS WAS INDEED ON THE RECALL LIST----I THINK I ALREADY FIGURED THAT ONE OUT. AND THEN WHEN I CALLED TO CONFIRM ALL MY PAPERWORK WAS IN ORDER THEY SAID THEY HAD NO INFO ON ME YET I HAD A CLAIM NUMBER FOR TWO CATS AND WAS IN CONTACT BY PHONE EMAIL AND MAIL. I HAVE NEVER GONE WITH PUBLIC CRITICISM ABOUT ANY COMPANY IN MY 49 YEARS BUT THIS HAS HIT A NERVE. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY----READ MY POSTS STARTING IN APRIL AND YOU WILL SEE JUST WHY MY CONCERN FOR THIS COMPANY DOES NOT EXIST ANY LONGER. (THE CAPS ARE INTENTIONAL)

“they have pets to that they love and the company itself is one of the most family oriented companies operating in the United States.”

Well, what says family values like poison by the ton?
There is nothing I like to share more with my family than watching a half million pets die in agony, unless it is taking a hammer to a litter of newborn puppies!
Or tying a sack of kittens into a burlap bag and playing" toss the unwanted litter into the river", goes hand in hand with the "just one litter, so the kids can see the miracle of birth" .
Good for target practice too, maybe training pit bulls.
Sounds like a family tradition to me!
What are you, some pinko commie tree hugger?

For the TOO DUMB TO LIVE (and yeah, I know you are here, we all know that sad fact), the above is called sarcasm, LOOK it up.

"As far as Menufoods is concerned I am well aquainted with their practices I am sorry they made such a large mistake that yes they should have to pay for but if some of you people had any idea what the company is about maybe you wouldn’t be so harsh.

They are based in CANADA--operating 2 plants--one in KS, the other in NJ. The old Iams plant they bought was sold recently to Mars.

USA Today May 26, 2007

Court: Menu Foods harassed pet owners

"The pet food company that recalled 60 million cans of contaminated dog and cat food repeatedly made harassing phone calls to pet owners who had lawyers and said they didn't want to talk, even after a judge ordered the firm to leave them alone, court records show.

"Lawyers from six firms representing clients who claim their pets were harmed by Menu's pet food asked a federal judge in New Jersey Wednesday to stop Menu from "bullying" people who had called the company since the recall was announced March 16, according to their court filing.

"U.S. District Judge Noel Hillman in Camden, N.J., agreed with the plaintiffs, describing the calls as "aggressive," according to a transcript of the hearing obtained by USA TODAY.

"Hillman ordered Menu Foods to have no contact with anyone who believes their animal was injured by its product unless a lawyer representing them is involved.

"At a previous hearing on Friday, May 18, the judge had cautioned Menu and Crawford that they should not contact people who had joined one of the lawsuits against the company. Legally, Menu cannot contact those plaintiffs directly but must go through their lawyers.

"But in affidavits presented in court Wednesday, pet owners said they received calls that weekend from Crawford representatives who pressed them to answer questions even after being told the owners had hired lawyers. In some cases, the pet owners also received multiple calls from Crawford's computerized phone banks after telling representatives they were represented by attorneys, according to the affidavits.

"It appears that the company was engaging in a cynical strategy, designed to settle some of the strongest claims cheaply and induce pet owners to give up information it might be able to use to defend against others," Blim & Edelson said in a letter Friday that was sent to clients and posted on Internet blogs for pet owners."

So pet-loving are they that a US federal judge had to issue a legal order stopping them from harassing the families of those they harmed.

and what about the people who could ill afford it who were financially drowned in vet bills? it's as if you lost part of your job- have hours cut from your pay- when an unexpected bill comes in that makes the difference of whether you can pay rent that month or not. menu foods is reponsible for its business pratices and employess- not the consumer.

if someone is putting a product on the shelves that's deadly they don't deserve to be in business. i doubt many people here are going to be class guilt tripped into thinking it's not ok to bitch about what was basically killing people's pets because someone at menu foods might lose their job.

i will never buy anything made by menu foods- they deserve to be bashed into the ground.they have not come clean in the least about what really happened and now they're playing the victim -"oh the manufacturer was hoodwinked too boo hoo". they are not the victims- they are the perps and unrepentant at that- dragging out the cross as if we're viciously waiving the hammer and nails in the air.

menu foods has some nerve aligning themselves with people who lost their pets as if they give a flying about anything but their bottom line. they'd kill and throw their grandmas into the pot if it would shave a percentage point off food cost.they saw nothing wrong with pet death being the consequence of their cost cutting. they knew the food was poisoned and they shipped it out anyway.

malice aforethought. ive not a smidgeon of sympathy for menu foods.

You FORGOT the China bashing!!

How can you drive people away and make them totally sick to even read the thread if you FORGET the racist stuff!??

And not a single Bush bashing post, VERY effective in driving people away.

Very disappointing.

The trolls and shills these days are just not as good as they were in the good ole days.

Peace2us, there's more info about the Innova stuff on the itchmo forum. Dumb question - if you're boycotting Menu, why are you still feeding your one cat one of their brands? Or is it the dry from some other plant?

I tried Honest Kitchen Prowl freeze-dried raw for my cat, but it was such a departure from what he was used to he didn't like it much so I had to go with Felidae Chicken and Rice in order to keep him eating. He likes it so much he doesn't appreciate changes, even to a different flavor. :D If I were to ever get a kitten, tho, I'd start them out on the Prowl and added meat.

Pilot,

As I have been collecting numerous recalled doll sets this week to be returned to Mattel, I have been e-mailing, snail mailing, phoning, and blogging about toys from China. I wouldn't say that this recall madness is focused on one company. Several times this week I've targeted the FDA, Congress, and the White House.

However, you're on a pet page. Don't expect too much chat about toys and toothpaste. Get a clue!!!!

Let me give some insight and details about vomit and diarrhea and obscure pet food brands for the newbies who are about to leave in disgust.

Thank you for emailing me, I understand why you are frustrated.

NO commercial pet food can be trusted at this point and if someone says that the food of a company can be trusted, please make sure that you know that persons name and correct address in case your pet sickens or dies.

At this point, I certainly would not trust ANYONE who endorsed a brand of commercial pet food because unless they MAKE the food, and are willing to ensure that your vet bills are paid if the pet dies, in writing, well, you could end up with a sick or dead pet and what are you going to do if that happens? And it happens a LOT.

The forum has good info but I cannot advise anyone to feed a pet ANY commercial food at this time. And I suspect that any pet owner who has dead or sick pets would say the same.

The pet food companies have another story. And some of the posters on some sites have turned out to be paid shills!

Shocked me too.

Nothing like that can ever happen here, and pets vomit, so why worry?
Just get whatever food your vet tells you is safe and be sure to get THAT in writing too because those vet bills add up!

The diarrhea is no big deal to a pet owner who can live up to the high standards of say, a professional pet rescuer and if you can't live up to THOSE standards then you should not have pets.

The whole thing is such a minefield and so nasty that having a pet is really not worth the trouble these days BUT if you can wade through 5 months of posts and then read another 90 posts from today about what pet food made which cats puke then you MIGHT be worthy to get a pet from a shelter.
See how simple that was?

CRAP, I forgot the dog food grading system!!
Just forget it, newbie, you REALLY don't want a pet THAT much.

I have just about had it with the Menu Foods bashing have you people looked at all at all the products that are being recalled. We are slowly being poisoned humans, animals all of us. As far as Menufoods is concerned I am well aquainted with their practices I am sorry they made such a large mistake that yes they should have to pay for but if some of you people had any idea what the company is about maybe you wouldn't be so harsh.
they have pets to that they love and the company itself is one of the most family oriented companies operating in the United States.
There is alot of companies caught in this mess and I hope none of you people ever find that your jobs and your families well being (including your pets) is altered because of a bunch of people who like to attack one and only one company!
As far as Menufoods paying off the court has said they are not to have any contact with the consumers until they (the court) say it is okay.
