More Than 240 Dogs Rescued From Texas Puppy Mill

Texas puppy millMore than 240 neglected dogs living in horrible conditions were taken from a puppy mill and were taken to safety.

Authorities were tipped off by a man who went to the Texas property to buy a camper trailer, but instead he saw hundreds of dogs that were underfed and malnourished. Seeing the conditions, he was prompted to bring back food for the dogs.

When the SPCA of Texas came to the scene, they saw hundreds of dogs in cages and kennels all over the property. Some were dead already and some were in need of desperate medical attention.

One worker said that this was one of the worst she had ever seen. She said there was feces and trash everywhere, and the dogs were living in horrid conditions.

Authorities found Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians, Boston Terriers, and other small breeds of dog that were locked up and used for breeding.

Upshur County Sheriff Anthony Betterton said: “The way it seems to me is that the individuals that owned this property and was taking care of these dogs were looking out for greed, money, and whatever they could make off of these animals. That’s just totally embarrassing. It’s uncalled for and it’s inhumane.”

The SPCA has seized all of the dogs off the property and will give them the attention and care they need and deserve.

Thank God for the man who saw what was happening and DID something about it. I hope that the rescued pups will be treated and find wonderful new homes. Puppy (and kitten and rabbit) mills are beyond horrible and I wish we could shut them all down!!! For today, I’m happy to read that some of the victims will have a chance at a normal, happy life.

I really, really hate people like this puppy mill breeder. They should be stuffed into a small cage and left to starve and die of thirst like they do to the poor dogs and puppies they use. Why do these people insist on showing such a lack of compassion for other beings? For the almighty dollar? Do not buy from pet stores or puppy mill breeders. Put these bastards out of business and then put them in jail for animal abuse.

What I want to know is if the property owners are going to have any charges leveled at them….like 240 counts of animal cruelty. Unless authorities crack down on these guys, they’ll just start up again somewhere else.

Heartbreaking. Yes, we need laws so people like this do some serious jail time. And God bless the man who cared enough to take action. Some humane society should give him an award.

The USDA’s APHIS is supposed to license and inspect all breeders who sell to pet stores. I wonder if this place had the federal license. The license they would be required to have is called Class A. if they are involved in brokering they are required to have a class B. I have four dogs rescued from puppy mills laying at my feet. Some of these dogs are very hard to turn around as they have never learned to trust people. They also, have learned that human touch usually means a kick or a slap. They don’t know how to drink from a pail as they are used to lick its. Many have rotten teeth as drinking from lick its doesn’t allow them to get water around their teeth to rinse of food. Lapping from a bowl or pail allows the teeth to get rinsed off. One of my four rescues had displaced knee caps from the horrible conditions she was kept in. Her pen was app. 3′by 3′ the 3 bigger pups were bullying her , the pen was app. 18 inches deep in urine and feces. There wasn’t any water dish and the food dish was an old rusted garbage pail lid. Empty of course. The mennonite who ran this puppy mill was going to hang this 13 week old puppy if we didn’t take her. We took her with us that night, she was seen by a vet the next day and with exercise and care her kneecaps went back in place and she is now a canine good citizen. She still doesn’t trust easily.

One of the best ways to stop puppy mills is don’t buy their pups and don’t buy from pet stores. Lobby your local autoritys to pass laws outlawing pens on laegs, lobby for police to enforce current animal cruelty laws, lobby for tougher cruelty laws and tougher sentences.

Thomas, Bless You for having and loving those dogs.
Does every state require a license to sell to pet stores? there is a puppy mill here I would love to shut down.

    Right on, Nora!

Some of these mills sell dogs to biomedical research companies like Giuliani’s consulting business clients.

This is no longer acceptable in our society today. People who do this need to be put out of business and put in jail. Did NO ONE see what was going on here before now? That is hard to believe. What about the neighbors–didn’t they know? I think we need to extend culpability to anyone in the vicinity who knew and didn’t do anything.

When “stars” with more money than brains, like Britney buy puppies spontaneously from pet stores, this promotes these types of horrible situations. IF she could read, someone should show her where her $5,000 puppy really came from.

I just watched the tape. It’s the most discusting thing I’ve seen. how terribe for those poor dogs. I hope they all find great forever homes.

  13. Realist says:

Just because a local Humane Society removed these animals does not mean that they will be re-homed and live happily ever after. I’m betting a majority will be euthanized either due to space considerations or for medical reasons prompting the shelter to deem them “un-adoptable”.

Maybe some local no-kill shelters will step in and remove the dogs from the humane society. Now that would be a happy ending.

I despise you puppy mill owner’s and worker’s. You are heartless, cruel and dumb. Obviously, the only way you know how to make money is by using and abusing innocent animals!! Man, you should feel real good about yourselves! NOT. There isn’t any word in the English dictionary that could possibly describe how terrible you are. You are lower than dirt. You shouldn’t even be able to sleep at night, nor should you even exist. You have NO purpose here. You need to go directly to jail (in a cage/bars) with no parole ever and rot there.
