Nearly 200 Animals Saved From Pet Shop Fire
Almost 200 animals were rescued from a fire at a Long Island pet shop after a basement fire filled the building with smoke. The firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in 5 minutes, but it took more than an hour to save the 74 dogs and cats, 50 birds and 60 small animals including lizards and hamsters.
“All of the pets in the entire store were scared, which is understandable,” [Assistant Fire Chief Gary] Hatton said. “None of them were injured, and none of the firefighters were injured by any pets,” he added.
