qt hounds is obviously from Nutro and hasn't checked out the consumer affairs. com website to see what Nutro users are stating about the latest use of their products. I know people who feed Pedigree and their goldens live to be 16 and on so if you just pay attention to the condition of your pet and not the marketing you'll do fine. I know people whose pets do terribly on the best premium pet food out there so.......just pay attention.

Wow...this is crazy!

Did Victoriville want Nutro?

Yes.

Did Victorville want the jobs?

Yes.

Did Victorville want the revenue?

Yes.

Did you elect your city officials who wanted the big business in Victorville?

Yes.

It all comes back to the citizens.
You don't vote, you don't have a voice!

and RT: Have you seen the home market? Homes in SoCal, Las Vegas and Phoenix that once sold for a million dollars are now only worth about $200k...it is NOT the Nutro plant that brought your property down, it is the bursting of the housing bubble. People like you want to send jobs to Mexico--you have choices. Victorville committed to the business, so they should see it through.

Evalynn: Eagle Pack: Not as great as Nutro. Those who criticise Nutro food have no idea what you are talking about. Nutro has one of the best performance records in the industry. No ground yellow corn; no chicken heads, feet or intestines--which may be found in the foods YOU feed your dogs. I have had excellent experiences using Nutro and will continue to use it on my dogs and cats.

Chris - I almost forgot. Your statement "This community of Spring Valley Lake is run by a group of homeowners that feel they are better than everyone else in the high desert, the city of Victorville won’t even incorporate them into the city limits." is a little off the mark. The facts are that years ago Victorville WANTED to annex SVL and SVL told Victorville no thanks. I have spoken to many people who were there when it happened. You obviously don't do your homework before you make claims do you?

Chris,

Speaking of people that don't know what they're talking about, you have a few whoppers in your statements from Mar 22! I live in SVL and you don't know what you are talking about. No one has ever said the smell is always present - it might be gone for several days and then appear for several days in a row. So you being anywhere for 3 days and saying there is no problem is meaningless. Did you know AQMD received over 600 complaints about the Nutro smell in April 2007?

And Chris, have you ever heard of obeying the law? That's that pesky little thing that all honest companies that do business in California have to do. And it turns out there's one under CA Health & Safety Code pertaining to air quality that they have violated. As I'm sure you know, AQMD investigated and issued a Notice of Violation to Nutro for violating the law.

What do you think it does to home prices when a seller is required by law to declare that the house is located near a dog food plant? Do you think that helps sales and prices?

What is so difficult to understand that people have a right to enjoy their property without having to smell dog food odors? We choose to stand up for our rights pal, even if you don't like it.

Oh by the way the claims that it smells so bad everyday and that they can not go outside is complete crap as well. I attend a three day dog show put on by the Apple Valley Kennel Club and sponsered by the "EVIL NUTRO" at Victor Valley College( less then three miles from the plant) a few weekends ago, there was not a single smell of cooking dog food in the air. These people are so full of themselves. Why don't they sue all the beer compaines, ever smelled the Miller brewery in Irwindale when they release, how about a Webers bread bakery, anything you cook has an order. Nutro is not breaking any laws or producing anything toxic and releasing it into the air. They have spent millions to make this small group of "better than the rest of us" residents happy. They haven't been sued into doing anything they are doing it to be good neighbors. Maybe they should stop buying all baked products of any kind because where ever those products are being made somebody has to deal with the smell. The land has always been zoned for industrial use, even before the Nutro plant was built it was industrial. The city of Victorville wanted Nutro to built on that site so why aren't the residents suing the city. The mayor's claim of visiting the Nutro plant in Leabon, TN and not smelling anything is a complete lie. That plant, as in any plant where something is being baked or extruded has a smell. The mayor and the city are covering their asses and don't want to fess up to the truth.

Its funny how people love to post information that is not true to stir up peoples emotions. The Nutro plant in Victorville is not a "meat processing plant". It is a gaint bakery for dog food. Everything that comes in has already been processed. They do not can any wet food in that plant. The home values in the Victorville area dropping have nothing to do with the "order of the plant". There are over 7,500 repos in the high desert and many new homes being built. The repos are gowing up everyday because there are not enough high paying jobs in the valley. Get the facts straight. This same group of people that is protesting the "odor" also complained about the "odor" of hamburgers being cooked when they built a Carl's Jr, and an In-n-out resturant a few years back. This community of Spring Valley Lake is run by a group of homeowners that feel they are better than everyone else in the high desert, the city of Victorville won't even incorporate them into the city limits.

EXCUSE ME! Loveholistic why don't you gogle Victorville. I live in what was a million dollar home long before the plant moved in. The Spring Valley Lake area (yes that is correct our homes are on a lake) is just east of the plant. Some homes have been here 25+ years. The MARS/NUTRO was built 3 years ago. So no one is crying after the fact. How dare you tell us to suck it up. YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE!
Come on Donnell none of us would knowing move into a location such as this. LISTEN UP PEOPLE! The lake and our homes were here first.
Nutro lied when they said they would not create any odor. This was a beautiful area
(no crack houses here) until Nutro came. Now the lawns are full of for sale signs, yet
like you said no one wants to live in this stink. The value of our homes are down not just because of the market but because of the STINCH.
We wouldn't wish this on you so why do you have to be so RUDE to us poor souls that have to endure this?

Victorville is a hellhole. I don't think you are smelling pet food rather you are smelling all the crystal meth being made. The plant was there first and the people who bought those houses knew that they were moving near a pet food plant. I have no patience for anyone crying after the fact. If Nutro was not there the only other industry would be drugs. So suck it up.

I live in Las Vegas. When searching for houses, I found a gorgeous house--3000+ square feet, big back yard, less than $350,000. Then, as I learned more about the community and ASKED questions, I learned that there was a pig farm less than a mile from this house. I immediately changed my mind about this house and looked in a different area of the city. My point is that Nutro was zoned for this area. Did homeowners bother to look at the zoning parameters? The City of Victorville wanted the industry and wanted the growth and now residents are blaming Nutro because of their poor planning? Hmmm

Anon,

I agree 2 years is long enough - an agreement of repair should have been made long before that. I did not realize it had been going on that long.

I live within 3 miles of the MARS/NUTRO pet food processing plant in Victorville, Ca.
They operate 24/7. We have endured this gross smell for 2 years now. We can't put up with another year of this awful smell. Our kids can't even eat lunch outside at school.
The stench makes after school sports impossible.

Nutro is owned by the huge MARS, Inc and they can certainly afford to pay their employees while they shut down to make the necessary repairs. We have suffered so now it's their turn to share the pain.

Peace2us, yes the list and scoring rules provide knowledge, but it also is misleading and potentially innacurate info. This Kirkland products rates 110 on the list but yet it has white rice......Kirkland Signature Chicken, Rice, and Vegetables, why is that?

Im just saying that I think its dangerous to try to classify foods on a list, and to give more points for things that are not necessarily good things, its misleading. I think, for people coming here for the first time, its unfair to them to put things on a list rating them at 110 points when rice is not necessarily a good thing to have in the food and when its not made fully clear that certain food on that list is manufactured by a company that was involved in the largest recall ever. I am in total agreement with you that even if a food wasnt involved in the recalls, doesnt make it good if there is junk for ingredients. But you have food on that list, rated pretty high, that does have junk for ingredients so that scoring system is flawed. So while I agree knowledge is power, I think there are lots of other way to determine if a food is good without using a scoring system that has flaws and without representing that a certain food is considered good when it is manufactured by a company that doesnt care what goes into that food. For anyone wanting or needing guidelines on food choices, the forums have lots of valuable info that people have already researched and experienced.

You stated this "And this is what angers me just as much as any recall ever could: That the pet food industry has been selling us bags of garbage for our animals that they have marketed as healthy and good." That "any recall" killed our kitty so I feel pretty angry about it all. Whats strange, is if we had been feeding Fancy Feast, she would have been with us today. Thankfully pet food labeling and ingredient issues is one of the focuses of many folks including Mike Floyd with www.defendourpets.org.

You stated this “And this is what angers me just as much as any recall ever could: That the pet food industry has been selling us bags of garbage for our animals that they have marketed as healthy and good.” That “any recall” killed our kitty so I feel pretty angry about it all. Whats strange, is if we had been feeding Fancy Feast, she would have been with us today. Thankfully pet food labeling and ingredient issues is one of the focuses of many folks including Mike Floyd with www.defendourpets.org.

To me, a company that puts a bunch of poor ingredients not fit for human consumption in a bag with pretty pictures and labels and markets that as quality food for our beloved pets, is just as guilty as a company that would allow poison to enter the pet food supply.
