Pet Owners Blame Nutro Dry Food For Their Pets’ Illnesses

In a ConsumerAffairs.com article, numerous pet owners are blaming Nutro dry dog food for their dogs’ illnesses or deaths. Owners all saw the same types of symptoms: diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, excessive drinking, and lack of appetite. When pet owners contacted Nutro to tell them of the problem, Nutro representatives assured customers that Nutro dry food products are safe. ConsumerAffairs.com tried to contact Nutro but received no response. One pet owner said: “This food was supposed to be safe and it isn’t…it nearly killed our two dogs.”

My dog died in April. He was on Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice. He had be sick on and off for over a year. I’m convinced it was the food.

What’s going on here is that Nutro is in the process of being sold to Mars. When that sale goes through - ALL LIABILITY IS GONE. They have been evading so that they can get the sale through and not lose a dime. There were some venture capitalists who bought the company several years ago and are now bailing out. As it was explained to me, Mars will purchase only the assets of the company, so the shell that is left of Nutro will have no assets - therefore, no liability.

I don’t care about how much I spent on vet bills, I’m so angry that people are not aware of what is happening and more pets are becoming ill. Mars must know what is going on. Does anyone know what to do the stop this sale? The media and the FDA are surely no help - I haven’t been able to get a response from either.

They have known for months that there was a problem, yet more and more pets have become ill and died so that they would not lose any money. They just keep denying everything.

I want to add another note re Nutro. The first couple of years I fed it there were no problems.

I believe something changed in the ingredients last year, and to a more or less extent depending on the bag you purchased (so you might have a dog not get very sick, just look unthrifty, or if enough of whatever it was or enough of several things in the food interacting, you might get a more or very sick dog from it).

My dogs didn’t have major multiple issues until December last year, mainly because I buy way in advance, in bulk, with their largest sacks. Up until December or so I was feeding out sacks produced many months earlier in that year, maybe even the end of the previous year (would have look it up. In the beginning, their symptoms would ebb and flow at least until their symptoms turned into a crisis in early march. I think it just depended on how much of the contaminant or contaminants were in the sacks I was using at that time).

Kim please let me know if you need me to repost my comments about Nutro food and my Curly Joe. If we can get them to do anything at all I’ll be surprised, but it’s worth a try. Our pets deserve justice. kldt7@yahoo.com

I have been feeding my pom Charlie Natural Choice Vension and brown
rice for about the last 6 weeks. He has been fine. HIgh energy level,
no vomitting, no bloody stools. BUT, I don’t feed it to him all the time.
However, he has eaten enough of it that I would have noticed a change.
My cats have been eating Nutro Natural Choice Weight Management
in the blue bag for quite some time, and none of the 3 of them has
ever gotten sick on it. One of my cats has a sensitive stomach and will throw up every now and then, but the other two have been fine. I just don’t want to take any more chances, and today have thrown away all the Nutro food inmy house, and will be buying new bags of Innova later. I hope I am not over-reacting as I have double checked the ingredients in the bags, and all looked ok, but better safe than sorry.

We lost our beautiful Blue Great Dane ” she was only 2.5 years old. She bleed to death in less then a week a little over three years ago. She only ate NUTRO Large breed puppy and we had started to give her the Lamb and rice.

Our new Blue is 2.5 and has been suffering from some weird looking pimple like round dry spots on her stomach and rear end, Her tail has 50% hair loss. All she does is sleep and is very inactive. Guess what she has been eating. No longer I changed her food yesterday. I’m so upset with the Nutro company. Or Mars or whoever you are. I wish you could have seen my young children pray and cry as I rushed our first BLUE down to Purdue to try and save her. Shame on NUTRO

I started feeding my dog Nutro 3 days ago. The first day she had a runny stool, but that is normal with her after a food change. I have noticed excessive drinking, and then she’s started peeing everywhere. Once in a while she’ll pee if ignored, or if she’s not had enough attention, or if she just can’t hold it because I’ve been out too long, but she never has accidents several times in a few days. I’m going to stop this food. I switched because it was supposed to be so pure and natural. However, something is very wrong here.
