The owner of a pet shop in Surprise, Arizona has been booked on 126 counts of animal abuse.
Christopher Novak was arrested after 160 dead or neglected reptiles were found at his store by deputies.
Authorities believe the reptiles were left for a three-week period without food, water and care. The power was turned off in the store in 110 degree heat.
Novak told investigators that he got lazy and didn’t go to the store during that time because he thought the reptiles would be fine.
15 tortoises, 10 turtles, and 13 lizards survived from the three weeks of neglect. They were turned over to the Phoenix Herpetological Society.
Novak’s arrest is believed to be the first in Arizona for alleged animal cruelty involving reptiles.
