Petition to Require Pet Food Companies to be Held Accountable for Damages

Request that the U.S. Congress enact legislation to require pet food manufacturers and the companies that market those pet food brands to be held financially liable for any medical costs related to or contributing to the illness and/or death of a pet that can be reasonably attributed to the food consumed by the pet. And that all pet foods include the name of the manufacturer, not just the brand under which it is sold.

This petition is in response to the thousands of pet parents and owners who have suffered under the Menu Foods recall and their slow response that started on March 16th, 2007.

In creating this petition, our motive is three-fold:

  1. First, we want to ease the pain and suffering of those who have lost their pets due to mistakes and negligence of pet food makers. The loss or illness of a pet can be emotionally devastating. On top of it, the financial burden of uninsured veterinary treatment can be a double-whammy, leading pet parents and their families to significant financial damage — often affecting other family members such as kids and the elderly. This legislation will create a venue for settling these cases fairly and out of court, eliminating the need for a lengthy court case, which companies rely on in order to reduce the likelihood of payout.
  2. Second, create a financial motive for pet food makers and marketers to set higher standards for pet food. We want to let them know that consumers are interested in higher-grade pet food. And that the longer a company waits in issuing warnings or recalls related to their product, the larger the potential financial damage. This new law would hold the manufacturers (often smaller, less financially sound organizations) and also the larger corporations that market the branded foods — who ultimately control what goes in them.
  3. Third, a clear public disclosure of who actually makes the food. Since the financial liability falls to the brand as well as the manufacturer, the name of the company that actually produced the food should be obvious to the consumer. How much clearer would this recall have been if the food was labeled “Made by Menu Foods”?

Once the final tally of the pet deaths is complete, the petition will be delivered to the head of the congressional committee that controls FDA funding (Dave Obey, D-WI, chairman of House Appropriations Committee).

I used to get an email from itchmo every day but it suddenly stopped this year. Since then I have been unable to sign in or get any information regarding the pet food lawsuit. In 2005 I lost Eva to cancer, rudy, smokey and whitey to kidney failure, and in 2007 I lost Red to kidney failure and Pierre to gastroeneritis. Beauty and chickerina are suffering at present from kidney failure. I have used science diet recalled pet food. I did sign up with the lawsuit but have not heard from anyone.
I would like very much to be alerted as I did previously and would like to sign this petition but for some reason unable to. I would appreciate hearing from you as in the past. thank you so much. distressed.

Why is BHA BHT allowed in dog food and treats when it has been associated with cancer. I unknowingly was giving Milk Bone Marrow treats to my dog that on 9/25/08 was put down for having cancer. If these bastards that make these foods could have gone thru the suffering that my dog did, then they may have thought twice before selling this crap.

all dog food companies should be held accountable.dogfood should be made safe for all pets.all dogfood plants should be made to undergo rigourous inspections.if their dogfood makes any pet sick then they should be held accountable if the pet becomes sick and or succumbs from eating the tainted dogfood this goes for all dogfood manufacturers!!!!! the dogfood manufacturers should be made to pay for all pet medical bills and burial.

I have Two Boston’s with cancer. My two year old had papers and the 5 year old was a puppy mill rescue. The only thing in common was the dog food I was feeding them!
Maybe I can’t prove anything- But I feel it was caused by their food!

Please do what you can to stop the dog food industry from their practices!! I am so tired of seeing so much hair in my pets food…even the “quality” food has strands of hair in it…have started supplementing real turkey with their food to try to extend their lives.

32563 Tedda Morris - it’s been quite a while since I last saw this, more than 2 years. Each and every day I still feel the pain from both of my friends (dogs) dying due to the tainted dog food which I bought and feed to both of them. Every time I am at any store that sells dog food, it makes me ill. My husband and son keep trying to get me to have another pet, unfortunely after what I went through with both friend (dogs) and witnessed their suffering, I don’t think I’ll ever own another pet. And if I do decide to take care of another living being, I will make the food myself every day to make sure something like that never happens again on my watch. I still feel so lost without my babies and wish I could do anything to change what happened at any cost. When I look at their pictures it makes me extremely sad and extremely angery at the pet food companies because they knew about this and did nothing. I PRAY FOR JUSTICE and peace in my heart and mind for this terrible sin which was committed. My heart feels for everyone who has lost a loved one over this.

I think it would be great if the pet food industry could get the Arsenic out of their pet food! It’s the Agricultural Industry (Farmers) that are putting Arsenic in every piece of meat produced in America! This means that the Pet Food Industry would have to import the meat they use from the E.U. (European Union) because they
are the only Government that has banned the use of Arsenic in meat and other food
products. No!, that is not just for Pets! It is also for Human consumption! The
U.S. still allows the use of Arsenic in the raising of Chickens whether it is to be
eaten by animals or not! The U.S. allows the Chicken Litter to be reprocessed for
feed for Cattle and Swine too! The Chicken Litter can also be used as fertilizer
on farm soils too! To get the Arsenic out of pet food it would have to be eliminated from Human Food First and I’m all for that!

  38. Marianne Wray says:

My friend’s precious dogs were all poisoned by Cargill dog food in Oct/Nov. 2009 and it was a terrible tragedy. They had bleeding capilliaries in their lungs, ear infections, horrible open lesions and it caused organ damage. I feel so very badly for her, and the horrible deaths that the dogs went through. I am aware that this is not an isolated incident and wholeheartedly agree that the manufacturers of dog food should be monitored more closely and also held accountable for toxins in their food. Anyone with a heart would agree.

Please add my name to the petition.
