Petition to Require Pet Food Companies to be Held Accountable for Damages
Request that the U.S. Congress enact legislation to require pet food manufacturers and the companies that market those pet food brands to be held financially liable for any medical costs related to or contributing to the illness and/or death of a pet that can be reasonably attributed to the food consumed by the pet. And that all pet foods include the name of the manufacturer, not just the brand under which it is sold.
This petition is in response to the thousands of pet parents and owners who have suffered under the Menu Foods recall and their slow response that started on March 16th, 2007.
Sign after the jump.
Or read about all the latest news surrounding the recall.
In creating this petition, our motive is three-fold:
- First, we want to ease the pain and suffering of those who have lost their pets due to mistakes and negligence of pet food makers. The loss or illness of a pet can be emotionally devastating. On top of it, the financial burden of uninsured veterinary treatment can be a double-whammy, leading pet parents and their families to significant financial damage — often affecting other family members such as kids and the elderly. This legislation will create a venue for settling these cases fairly and out of court, eliminating the need for a lengthy court case, which companies rely on in order to reduce the likelihood of payout.
- Second, create a financial motive for pet food makers and marketers to set higher standards for pet food. We want to let them know that consumers are interested in higher-grade pet food. And that the longer a company waits in issuing warnings or recalls related to their product, the larger the potential financial damage. This new law would hold the manufacturers (often smaller, less financially sound organizations) and also the larger corporations that market the branded foods — who ultimately control what goes in them.
- Third, a clear public disclosure of who actually makes the food. Since the financial liability falls to the brand as well as the manufacturer, the name of the company that actually produced the food should be obvious to the consumer. How much clearer would this recall have been if the food was labeled “Made by Menu Foods”?
Once the final tally of the pet deaths is complete, the petition will be delivered to the head of the congressional committee that controls FDA funding (Dave Obey, D-WI, chairman of House Appropriations Committee).

They need to be held responsible. They aren’t reporting all the deaths that are occuring at an alarming rate. some of these deaths date back into November. They knew they had a problem and waited almost a month to recall.

The horrible little secret has now been exposed — pet owners have been paying the marketing costs of brand-name pet food retailers — all of whom are merely selling the same product. Now that that product is tainted, they are all exposed for the charlatans they are.
Consumers should be protected from such marketing fraud. Our pets are frequently child-surrogates or childrens’ companions. They are certainly family members. Shame on these awful pet companies.

I am in total agreement with the Petition to Require Pet Food Companies to be Held Accountable for Damages
March 21st, 2007 at 8:23 pm
It is not only unacceptable that these companies knowingly allowed tainted pet food to be sold, and subsequently consumed by our pets, it is criminal. Our pets are our best friends and constant companions; for some they serve as our eyes and ears, for others they are our only source of unconditional love, and for all of us who have pets, they are important members of our families and we need them and love them as such. For all that they give to us, they deserve so much better than to be poisoned by people whose only concern is covering up their negligence and worrying about their bottom line.
In my opinion, those responsible for this heinous act of criminal negligence are the real animals in this scenario, and they must be held accountable.

Even worse, some of us are going out of our way to get “healthy” or special food for our companion animals… and some of THESE brands are also ending up in the recall.
This is a huge concern for me, since I am disabled, and my animal is MORE than a companion… she helps me be able to live on my own. She helps me manage. I’d really be lost if she got sick!

It’s a great idea, but it’ll be an uphill battle… just look at how long it took and how many pets lives were lost before the airlines finally decided to start climate controlling their cargo bays and putting in rules for handling of checked animals

It is sad that we must read your blog to find out the most reliable and detailed information on this tragic situation. We all thank you for that.
We have another solution. After twice returning the recalled food (first Nutro then the Purina), we are now simply making our own soft dog food (which we mix 50 / 50 with hard dog food nuggets that we have purchased for years from Solid Gold) for our two toy poodles out of food that we are also eating ourselves: chicken, rice, carrots, and chicken stock. Our dogs love it!!
If vast numbers of fellow pet owners switched to their own home-made food (at least as a supplement) then it would send a clear message to the pet food industry.

As I sign this, my 5-year-old, previously healthy cat is lying in an animal hospital fighting for his life. He trusted me, and I feel as if I have let him down. They need to find out how this happened and prosecute all those who knew about this prior to the recall. Had the food been pulled from the shelves when it was first known that there may have been a problem, I wouldn’t have purchased the food which sickened my cat.

Thank you for keeping us up to date and the endless hours you contribute to keeping corporate America accountable. I started my own pet food company nine years ago when my German Shepherd died of cancer when he was only five. There is FAR too much the general public does not know about pet food and your petition is a breath of fresh air.
I will post this on my website and actively support making it as widely known as possible.
Thanks again!!!

My 6 month old kitten is at the vet’s right now recovering from a violent illness of a mysterious nature. When I first took her there she was vomiting blood. She’s had every kind of test including barium xrays. Last week she ate some Iam’s tuna flakes with sauce from another batch than the ones which are posted as being tainted. If I find out that it was the food that caused this……….
I’m not in favor of the government regulating our lives but it seems we may need it when there are low standards for certain industries. As the airline industry needs a passenger bill of rights maybe the animals of our country need theirs too. They wouldn’t if people did their jobs as they were supposed to and common sense courtesy was extended. This whole thing is really sickening but maybe it’s what it takes for the industry standards to be raised.

i have a dying cat at the vets right now. i have been feeding her the nutro natural choice wet food for about 5 months now. she seems to be progressing but her kidney levels are not changing. my family and i (including our pets) are very saddened by this. i am trying to get a hold of a lawyer to file suit against this horrible company that has known so long about this contaminated food. if they would have let us know sooner we would not be in the position right now. thank goodness for the banfield animal clinic in petsmart said they are not charging for any vet bills to us that we have/are incurring while she is there and still living. we are keeping our fingers crossed that our cat gets better and comes back home alive.

97330 Bobbie Schroering My Precious perfect Yorkie 2lbs.10 ozs. died this Sunday. She was my little Angel for 13 years. I adored her. She was so loving and kind. She had severe diahhrea and bloody projectile vomiting. I was feeding my dogs Nutro canned . She recovered after 3 vet visits I.V’s, and lots of 24 hr. love and care. A week later she died. I knew before I even heard of the recall that it was the food. I talked with I clerk at the pet store and told him that I knew it was the food. Today I was sent to this website. I never expected this loose to be so terribly excruciating and painful. I protected and deeply loved this little adorable baby. I held her in my arms as she passed on.I told her how grateful I was to have had her for my Little darling. I thanked her for being such a good little girl. I was devastated, watching her struggle ,she could barely breathe. She was a part of our lives for 13 years, I will miss her so much,I can not express how sad I am. I miss her little pitter patter as she followed me from room to room. I miss her beautiful little face and her kisses.

I THINK IT’S UNFORGIVEABLE THAT A COMPANY SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS AND STILL CONTINUE TO PUT OUT A DEADLY PRODUCT!! ALSO, I THINK IT GOES BACK MUCH FURTHER THAN 12/2006, AS MY CAT GOT SUDDEN RENAL FAILURE/DIABETIC SXS. LAST JULY, AND SHE’S NEVER BEEN SICK A DAY IN HER 15 YRS. OF LIFE! I FED HER IAMS, AND SOME OTHER “GOOD” CAT FOODS!! FORTUNATELY, SHE SURVIVED, AFTER I SPENT ABOUT $2000. TO SAVE HER, AND WITH A LOT OF LOVE, AND PRAYERS FROM MYSELF AND FRIENDS! HOWEVER, I STILL HAVE TO GIVE HER AZODYL AND EPAKITIN, TO MAKE SURE SHE IS OK! I WANT TO SUE THESE BASTARDS FOR EVERY PENNY THEY MADE ON THE ILLNESS OF OUR BELOVED COMPANION ANIMALS/FRIENDS!!-KDO;

My heart breaks for those who have lost their babies as a result of the toxic foods. My 18 year old tabby cat, Scratcher, has been in the hospital since Tuesday with enlarged kidneys. He was fed Authority, Nutro Gourmet Classics and Sophisticat wet food brands. His kidney values seem stable (for his age), so we’re hoping it’s an infection, not renal failure. Our other kitties seem Ok. Unfortunately, I discovered I had fed recalled food (Mixables) to our Dobie, Sadie, since last summer. Although she seems fine, we had her blood tested…still waiting for the results. If anything happens to my “kids”, I’ll feel so guilty. We will actively support and sign the “Accountability Petition”.

It would appear that the same safety and hygienic measures used
for products for human consumption are not used for products for
pet consumption. Delay in recall seems to have cost many pet

This cavalier treatment of pets and the people who love them dearly has got to stop. Selling spoiled eggs, carcinogens, and the ground-up bodies of euthanized pets in pet food has got to stop. Delayed recalls in the event of food quality/safety issues has got to stop. Non-disclosure of the names of brokers to whom suspect ingredients are traced has got to stop. Higher standards! Accountability! Transparency! Enforceability! All these things have got TO START.

Carol Sundell 48187. I agree food companies should be held accountable for the deaths of pets from their food. I feel so sorry for all those people that had to spend money out on vet bills and some that have lost pets my heart goes out to you. I used to feed nutro to my Dals and found them in serious problems one day with kidney failure about 4 years ago. Gosh the vet bills alone were really high. I know they claim it wasn’t going on back then, but you wonder. I lost them both one to heart failure and one to kidney failure before their time. I now feed my dogs kumpi food and I’m very happy with the turn around in them. I too searched for various safe foods and found it hard to find a company that didn’t have a recall. I did for a period of time cook my dogs own food. Finally a canine officer and trainer turned me onto the food for my dogs when he saw all the different brands I tried that the collie wouldn’t eat or the Dalmatian. Both are service dogs and I’m very pleased with the food and their coat has a natural shine without a lot of grooming. Thanks for a wonderful product. You have convenienced me to stay with with the products just by the changes in my new pair of canines.

My cats are my best friends, every day I’m astounded with the unconditional love they give me, and to think that these companies sold me food that could have killed them makes me sick. I’ve known for awhile that pet food companies have only their pocketbooks in mind at the expense of our pets’ health, but this is the last straw. They’ve lost me as a customer forever. I’m going RAW. And if my cats get sick from having eaten their stinking food, count me in on every lawsuit there is. They messed with the wrong pet owner.

I’m not a litigious individual, and I don’t believe in frivolous lawsuits. But in cases like this where so many pets and pet owners have been harmed, and there was a delay in the time of the recall from when the company knew there was a problem, there is clearly a need for these companies to be held accountable.

My perfectly healthy 7 year old cat died on 3/10/07. I caught her eating my dogs Nutro Natural Choice dry dog food the day before. As a result, I took my other cat and dog to the vet to make sure they were ok. Got the blood tests back today - cat is healthy, dog has an increased enzyme count in his kidneys. Is it a coincidence, or is there more to this story? I’m extremely concerned this isn’t limited to the wet food.

The simple fact they do not post the many deaths and illness’s is very alarming. The same regulations should be for my pets food as well as ours. Since they are our responsiblity, it is their responsiblity to us, to maintain the decent balance of their food. Not poison our pets, because it is cost effective to them.

Officially, my cat had a bloodclot and complications. But I think a number of those complications could have pointed back to the food he ate. He had Iams canned sometimes. He was one of the best friends I ever had. He was only 13. We could have been together for another 5 years.

It makes me so sad to read of all the people who have lost their beloved pets. I am grateful that our spoiled little cat baby is okay, and I hope that her food doesn’t appear on the list in the future. She has eaten Fancy Feast for years and so far everything seems to be fine. Menu Food should be held accountable, but so should the supplier of whatever ingredient it turns out to be that was contaminated. I hope other pet food manufacturers are aware of who that is and will come forward if they have been supplied by that company. My sense of security is a little shaky until I know for sure that no other manufacturers have been affected. Answers seem to be slow in coming.

I think that most people regard their pets as family members and these pet food companies need to realize that if they themselves wouldn’t want to feed the crap they are manufacturing to their own family members why would we (the consumers) want to feed it to them either? I think that menu foods should be held accountable. They failed to act quickly and I still don’t think pet owners have the “whole” story, and I fear they never will. This company instead of coming forth and trying to save as many pets lives as possible decided to hide behind their wall of corporate greed to milk and mooch as much money out of their products as possible, and instead of consoling pet owners, taking action, and taking responsibility for their actions they commented and complained about how much the recall was going to cost them as if to say you should feel sorry for them because they lost ton of money. They have the nerve to say this despite the fact they have taken away something from people across the country that money can’t buy. Pets lives, our family members lives. For those whose pets became ill but survived how many years, months, weeks have this company shaved off of your pets lives? What are the long term effects? What will the bills incurred end up being in the future because of this? No matter how hard the pet food industry tries to suck up, they are too late, theres one thing they can’t give us back, our pets lives, health, or longevity. For this these pet food companies and menu foods should suffer. I personally will never purchase, buy, or use ANY brand pet food found on the recall list, manufactured by menu foods, or in any way related to those involved. I can not and will not put trust back in these companies. On a final note pet food manufacturers should be made to clearly state which manufacturer makes their products and also the plant code locations so that in the event of a recall there is more organization and the products can be removed from store shelves as quickly as possible, provided the company comes forth before the problem becomes crisis unlike menu foods sorry attempt at swift, effective, action. I am enraged by the way this was handled, and that it happened in the first place, and my heart goes out to everyone who fed their pets any of these products.

I hope all the people at Menu Foods enjoy all the money they made, cause they have no souls. So slow to respond to the complaints because doing the right thing would cost them $$$. I feel for all those who lost their furry family members. I hope these money hungry, soulless companies like this go down in flames.

It is unconscionable that nearly a month elapsed before any Media report on this. It is further disgraceful that Veterinary Professionals were not gvine a heads up and warned to be looking for this problem. How many pets died needlessly? One day! one days notice could have meant an animal could survive. Its also about time that packaging include the processing facility in order to avoid needing to surf through a maze of cover up and double talk when people are looking to the source for a problem. I hop the law suits bury Menu Foods. Its about time to smarten up and reqire proper food preparation practices across the board.

I think that better regulations are a good idea, however the biggest problem is not the laws but the enforcement of these laws. It’s a sad reality that while there are many people that take pride in their work and providing good quality and safe foods, there are many many more that are only here to make a proffit and could care less who or what gets hurt in the process.
I was lucky that my 3 kitties were not affected by this, but a couple of my friends were not and have incured hundreds of dollars of vet bills to have their pets tested and treated from getting sick off of the tainted foods. They are lucky though that now vets know what to look for and did not loose them to an unknown illness like so many have already.

i don’t happen to believe that it is just the ‘wet’ food that has been contaminated. i had a rescue boxer female who died at the end of january suffering from acute kidney failure of unknown origin. she was eating a dry form of nutro natural choice lamb and rice and was also on a supplement (which was in a pouch) to boost her immune system. our other two dogs were having intermittent episodes of vomitting/diarrhea having been on a short term amount of iams chicken and rice, also the dry version. there’s no telling which item was the culprit. but you have not idea the agonizing, helpless experience watching a beloved pet who had already had a traumatic life, to die so quickly before your eyes before she was able to receive any medical help. her veterinarian could not explain her short term and extreme illness, describing it as very, very rare. princess did not make it to her second birthday.
i compel this company to be fully forthcoming with their information. i do not believe for a second that it is just limited to the ‘wet’ version of their production. wheat/gluten is found in the dry product as well and should be fully investigated by the FDA!!!

I would wish that every decision-making executive of each and every company involved in this horrible mess would be made to suffer the exact same pain and death that they have caused for so very many of our four-legged babies. We must find ways to keep this from ever happening again. Labels must contain ALL information as to the production of these foods; Brand name, Production company name, Plant name and location, full and detailed list of each and every ingredient with % of each included. There must be strict and stringent laws put in place to hold these companies, and the individuals of these companies, wholly responsible for their products and whatever damage and suffering their products may cause. There must also be a means to enforce these laws. May God bless and have mercy on all of those affected by this and may He help us all to find the means to keep this from ever happening again.

My pets mean the world to me and anything that can/will harm them is totally unacceptable. Pets are members of families and bring such unconditional love to thos of us who are fortunate enough to be members of their world. They depend on us for everything and those companies who are involved in the well being of pets should be held accountable for anything that can be harmful or deadly to them.
If any companies will not accept this responsibility they should cease operations immediately.

zip: 04864, Carolyn Damon - I believe I now know what killed my 4 1/2 year old Brittany in 2005. She developed vomiting, diarrhea, was leaking urine, and even though I spent $5000 trying to save her life no one had a clue what to do. I had an autopsy done at Portland Emergency Veterinary Clinic in Portland, Maine. She had aplastic anemia. No red blood cells in her body. Her spine was like jello I was told. I am angry. This was now declared on CNN today to be contamination by rat poison. I am outraged. Rat poison would have had the effects on my dog Rheba that I mentioned. I now cook for my current. I have NO remaining confidence in any pet food on the market and will not until regulations are put in place AND enforced that require ongoing toxicological monitoring of all products made by the pet food industry. In the absence of effective oversight of this corrupt industry, every time we open a can or a bag of pet food and feed it to our beloved companions, we’re basically playing Russian roulette wtih their lives.
Oh and . . .thanks again to China and to our government’s disastrous global trade policies for bringing the rat-poison-laced wheat product into this country in the first place. We should be boycotting Menu foods and all pet food manufacturers who use them as a supplier. We should also be boycotting EVERYTHING that comes into this country from China.

I had been feeding my ferals this brand (I feed about 8-10) and trap them for TNR. Two weeks ago, I trapped 2 little ones for TNR, and when I called to see how they were doing, I was told that one of them had died!!! We pet owners purchase feed, relying heavily on manufacturers promise of good nutrition and quality of their products.
Manufacturers MUST be held responsible for poisoning our pets ! They should, by all rights, be forced to reimburse pet owners for vet bills created by their lack of due diligence.
Just why didn’t the manufacturer of the affected foods not discover this dreadful ingredient? Aren’t they supposed to analyze their product, as they state?

I hope a law is made that no company can have the market on this. There would never have been all these losses…………..

Mary Moren 85835 - Pretty sure this recall will not just be for wet/pouch foods! AND I’m pretty sure it won’t be just recent events! We fed our two Beagles dry Science Diet and lo-n-behold… a healthy 5 year with normal blood tests and normal annual exam just a couple months earlier was diagnosed with… yes… acute kidney disease out of the blue.. The vet said she couldn’t figure it out but she did note there had been a few “other cases recently” which was odd in dogs so young…. The saddest part was after treating the first dog for over six months and watching her get worse even with hospitalization, IV’s, Xrays, daily dose of fluids, different meds including steroids and several thousand dollars later…. she had to be put down due to the terrible suffering. Then a very short 11 months the 2nd dog was gone! NEWS FLASH…. This began in August 2005 and the first dog down was January 2006 and second dog down in December 2006. We rescued an older Beagle recently and she appears healthy but immediately threw out the Science Diet last night AFTER I went to the vet and they said they thought the recall would grow to include the dry food too! We will gladly join any Class Action in order to effect changes for the future well being of our of our animals here and abroad as necessary!

Just by pure luck, my cat was being fed foods not on the list. Isn’t there any type of quality control or are stray cats and dogs (taster animals) cheaper than equipment and technicians. Crucify the idiots.

10023, Cynthia Weinman I am so furious at Menu Foods, but even more so at Nutro since they are the brand name and it is likely that they knew about this for a while. Our cat Dennis started to refuse to eat a month ago (he probably knew there was something wrong with the Nutro food) and when I think of the weeks we spent urging our poor cat to eat this poisonous food, it makes me want to cry. Thank god he’s OK, but no thanks to these greedy manufacturers who don’t care about our animals, only about their money. Nutro’s punishment should be that their CEO and vice presidents should have to eat the food they sold to us — that certainly would make them more careful in the future.

The pet food companies should be accountable for their actions or lack of action in this case. For most of my family and friends, our pets are our family, and these companies are killing our “children” inadvertly and they should be held accountable for this.

Once complaints began to come in, this food was tested and as many as one in six animals died during those tests but the manufacturer still did not recall the foods. Pet owners bought into their claims of having a “happier, healthier pet” if they purchased their products. The manufacturers got their money and pet owners all over are left only with carcasses!

The pet food companies should be accountable for their actions or lack of action in this case, including the FDA. The FDA is not doing enough to make sure that the food that we feed our pets (my case my children) is safe. The food that we feed them is also affecting their immune system and this is the reason why our pets die of cancer.

Us pet owners are under alot of stress worrying about if our brand of dog food will be safe– Our furkids are very precious to us and not just consider property but a member of our families. The pet food companies should be held responsible we put our trust in them and they have viloated our trust. Thank you

It is easy to go and buy just any pet food. But pet food, like anything else, is a “get what you pay for” deal. Yes, pet food companies have neat advertising and cute puppies and kittens on their packaging, and they will swear up and down the block that it is the best, most nutritous, most safe pet food you can possibly buy. But a public unwilling to educate themselves on what goes into the making, testing, and marketing of something they will feed a pet, possibly an expensive pet , at the very least an extension of ones family, is a public that is almost asking for a disastrous event such as this to happen. That sounds harsh, but really, a little research goes a long way. Until that kind of thing can happen, I say hold them responsible not only for the owned pets who have died, but for all of the animal lives wasted during their ridiculous testing procedures that are SUPPOSED to prevent an owners animal from dying. If this was one of my dogs,I WOULD WANT TO KICK SOMEONES ASS IN A REAL BAD WAY. Feed Kumpi.

My Family at this point are afraid to feed our pets any wet foods, and were also advised by our vet that any of the softfoods, treats, or even dry foods for pets manufactured by this company should be avoided of which really narrows what we can feed our pets, of which has become very costly..
And how do we know that somehow this was not done on purpose by China, with all that is going on the polictical front with this country and China…

Menu foods has hurt and possibly killed our two cat-children and I believe they should pay. Money alone will not do. The CEO, CFO and COO must resign for the good of the company or whatever is left of this miserable company after all the litigation that is sure to come. After their termination, we, the pet owners, should be allowed to get our hands on them so they can see how we do in the Big Apple. I purchased a six-pack of Iams canned food for my dog in January as a “treat” food - he LOVES to eat canned food. He suffered severe diarrhea but luckily no complications - that I am aware of. (I had NO idea it could have been caused by his food…I assumed he had gotten into something). I had to purchase special food from the vet for him to eat for a few days until he was better. Approximately 2-3 weeks later, I fed him another can out of that 6-pack which he VERY reluctantly ate (HE must have known something about it wasn’t right) and after 2-3 hours was having difficulty urinating, running in circles outside with diarrhea and again, I had NO REASON to suspect the food. He was miserable for 1-2 days. Now all his misery makes sense. If you can’t trust a high-end brand like Iams - then who? This “recall” is too little too late. My dog was lucky -there were others that were not and I feel so, so sad for their owners. My Buddy has been my best friend for 10 years now and I NEVER thought I would have to worry about his food killing him. And the worst thing about this is they DIDN’T LET PEOPLE KNOW IMMEDIATELY ABOUT THIS SO THEY COULD POSSIBLY HAVE PREVENTED THEIR PETS DEATHS. Makes me sick - money and public relations are more important, right?!?!? We all are aware that bad things can happen and we are all subject to that, but gee, let’s wait and see how many deaths there are before we actually WARN people because maybe they’ll never figure it out………. or make the connection that it’s the food………..or just blow it off………………….. or……………………..eventually they’ll forget about it………………or…….

This is a great country. In this country we have the ability to be self sufficient, meaning we don’t need to import crap from foreign countries! If government started taxing the companies that outsource their products maybe it could be a big plus for the American economy.
We make it too easy for companies to make products in foreign countries, it needs to stop!
I know full well that there are American farmers who grow wheat. The recent pet food tragedy could have been avoided by using wheat from the USA! Although cats and dogs don’t actually need wheat in their diets, I know that improper pet diets will continue (unfortunately) At least use products from US suppliers!
Pet food companies need to be regulated, not just said that they are!

NorthEast Ohio alpaca farmers recently lost several of their herd due to Land O’Lakes inadvertently putting antibiotics into alpaca feed. (The antibiotics were supposed to go into chicken feed.) Female alpacas cost anywhere between $20,000 to $40,000 each with prize male studs going for up to $300,000 but moreso is the emotional loss. These poor people were devastated not only because of the financial loss but because they love these gentle animals, calling them a “huggable investment”. ANY food product, whether it’s for humans, birds, mammals, whatever - all living beings are worth ensuring their food source is safe for consumption. Won’t somebody step up to the plate and be accountable, for God’s sake?

our cats, rascal + lucy, have been eating nutro wet food in the pouch for years (in addition to the dry nutro). we stopped feeding them this food as soon as we heard from a friend of the specific recall for the wet nutro products. however, since then, we have learned that the list of recalled foods is much, much larger. we took them to the vet for a check up + blood tests as soon as we could. a day later, the vet called us with the unfortunate news that both of our girls had elevated levels of toxins in their system, most likely due to eating this food. we had essentially been poisoning them for the last few months, and had no idea, which is heartbreaking. we had to take them back to the vet, where they have been put on IVs to try to flush the toxins from their systems. the vet will be testing their blood again to see if the treatment is helping. hopefully, with this treatment, our girls will be better + home with us soon. but, so many other are less fortunate than us, and have already lost their dear friends to this, and my heart goes out to all of you.

I rescued 10 felines last year. Five of them died at Christmas and I was extensively questioned about poisonous items in my house when I rushed the first one to the emergecy hospital. How do I prove this “killing house” is responsible? No wonder they did nothing for 3 months and I think it was going on before that. Now they say if you can prove it. They are just trying to cut their losses. DAMNIT, I’d like to have cut my losses. I’d like to have my babies back. To make matters worse these murderers tested the food on cats and dogs. They finally admitted it when 7 died. THEY DO NOT NEED TO BE IN THE PET BUSINESS OF ANY KIND.

Although my cats were not given food on the recall list, every time I open a can of cat food I worry about the safety its contents. It is especially distressing to discover that many “super premium” pet foods are made by this manufacturer that has betrayed our trust. There should be regulations that the ingredients list and nutrition analysis be readable: black text on white or light colored background. The current 3 oz. Iams label lists its ingredients in tiny black text on very dark violet background — impossible to read even in bright lighting. What are they trying to hide?

We lost our Persian Garfield Jan 2 to kidney failure. He had not been sick . He quit eating, became lethargic, etc. We were devastated….did not know of tainted food in Jan.. We bought an new Persian kitty in Feb and began feeding him the leftover pouches and cans we had from Garfy. Now we are treating the kitty for kidney problems!!!! We threw away old opened packages (as we do other garbage) and we returned the unopened packages so they would not accidentally be fed…..we do have vet records and we do intend to try to be reimbursed for the vet costs…..Now we are afraid to buy pet food as who can we trust? I think the companies knew well before the products were recalled….they need to pay for the sick pet’s vet bills….WHY can’t these companies use wheat from American farmers who both need the business and are required follow American standards?

Our 8 year old Border collie died 2 weeks ago of kidney failure so bad, we had to put him to sleep. My vet questioned me about having rat poison around, but I told him I am an environmmentalist. I don’t use that kind of stuff. Next fear that someone had poisoned my animals. We continued feeding our two Tibetan Spaniels the same food since his death with one of them becoming ill. I am now making homemade dog food and recovery is happening at last. Our medical bills are not huge as he died so quickly and horribly, but the emotional bill is tremendous. I cry all the time and am afraid to feed my special friends. I fed the Iams slices in gravy and the little ones didn’t like it, so the big guy ate it all and died. I then gave the little guys Nutro chicken & rice dinner in can and they became sick. I still have full cans listed on the recall. My vet is filing this information, so I haven’t, but decided I should put my name on your list. Thanks. Nina

I lost my best friend Abby, a 1 year 11 month old 8 lb. Papillon 3 weeks ago, to kidney failure. She had been fed Nutro ultra since I bought her. The entire process is well documented from her admission to the hospital with blood tests ultra sound and at the end a necropsy of her kidneys. This all took place prior to the recall of the affected food but it all came together after that as my vet could not figure out why until then. I have since found 1 can from the list and still have it in my possession. Please get the truth to all the pets affected by this horrible event and make all involved accountable. Joyce Wood Zip 44039

This company, Menu Foods, in order save money, in the name of greed and the botom line, profit, sold out and bought cheap products from another country. They did not check the product and now beloved pets have died. They have died in the name of greed. Menu foods should be held accountable and those that have lost pets and suffered should be compensated. The compensation will do nothing for the loss of their pet, but Menu foods cannot be let off the hook. The best thing we can do is never buy commercial pet food from this company again. They use other dead animals that are diseased, even other companion pets in their foods. This company should pay for their greed.

In loving memory of Tyson, my 6 year old Boxer mix, who died Jan. 16, 2007. His test results were off the charts and he was gone in a matter of days, but never will be forgotten. He was fed Ol’Roy beef and chicken cuts in gravy along with Ol’Roy dry food.

My heart goes out to the entire pet family community. This is beyond catastrophic. Have one comment to make in regard to someone’s comment regarding SOLID GOLD pet food. I called them last week to check whether they processed their own food and was told they contract to a company called Diamond. I must agree it is scary to know what to feed our pets and just who or what companies can be trusted. Last year after researching about half dozen companies as to the contents of their foods because my vet was concerned about one of my dog’s liver, I settled on Nutro Lite. But with 4 types of food on the recall list, I will not support them after this. We pet owners need to never forget this -EVER-and to band together and stop buying from all of the companies on the list and also to make sure to check if a new “name” appears, that it is not the old company changing its name and operating under the same old standards.

If you didn’t investigate what you were feeding your pets, you have only yourself to blame. You blame the company for cheaping out, and look what you did. You bought the cheap food. Even the people who bought “super-premium” brands like Nutro & Iams cheaped out. There are plenty of organic and small batch foods available from companies who think of your pets as furbabies & family, just like you do. I must shamefully admit that I am guilty of the same. I thought Nutro “All-Natural” was a safe & economical choice, and guess what was on the list!? I don’t even feed my cat wet food, but you can bet I’ll be trashing the rest of the Nutro dry food I have and sacrificing a little more dough to do the right thing for her diet.
Like other people have said, this should be a wake-up call to investigate ALL processed foods we purchase, for ourselves and animals alike. Remember all the fuss about peanut butter a few weeks ago? Hmmm…..

To all the people who have lost their beloved furbabies, please accept my deepest sympathy. My heart goes out to you. My thoughts and prayers are also with those who are currently sick and are undergoing treatment.
While my dog wasn’t affected by this recall (THANK GOD), I am signing this petition because she very well could have been. Menu Foods needs to be held responsible for the pain and suffering of these animals as well as the suffering of the people who are mourning the loss of their best friend/child/family member or those who are currently caring for their sick pet. Menu Foods should not only be ordered to monetarily compensate all those pet owners who were affected by this (not that the money could ever begin to replace their loyal companions), but they should also be ordered to make a large donation to pet charities/organizations/shelters in addition to be forced to dissolve their company and business.
This is yet one more reason why the US should ban companies/corporations from outsourcing their business to other countries in order to save themselves money. Look at what this has cost so many people and now our pets too have had to pay a price. This is absolutely outrageous!

I just found out about the extended recall-I rarely feed my cats the wet food, but ran out of the dry, and had to feed them 2 pouches a week and a half ago. I was relieved to see that mine were produced before the date of the ones recalled, until now. So far, I see no sign of abnormal behavior, but am watching carefully until I can get them in for testing. My thoughts and prayers go out to all suffering right now….so many more than are being publicized. I only hope that as a result of this, stronger regulations and accountability are put in place.

First off, our hearts and prayers go out to those who lost their loved ones. I can’t imagine losing my animals in such a terrible way. Luckily I took our dogs off of Iams last year and have only fed them Kumpi foods since. Kumpi is an independent dog food company who I now COMPLETELY trust and I will never take them off it. I took them off of Iams simply because I didn’t know what was really in the food and I didn’t know what my dogs were eating. I researched online and found kumpi.com where a comparison chart of the ingredients major pet food companies (such as menu foods) put in their foods and was completely shocked with the results. The chart explained the ingredients in simple terms that I could understand and I finally realized that a funny commercial, great packaging, or a high price doesn’t necessarily mean that the product is quality. For any of those people that are concerned about their pets I highly recommend they visit www.kumpi.com and research for themselves. Menu foods has taken too many lives due to greed. They have broken up families, caused emotional scars, and have made hard working families pay thousands of dollars in medical bills to save the lives of their family members. They need to be stopped!!! If you truly love your pets, don’t give the greedy, commercial pet food industry your support or money any more. I am in no way affiliated with the kumpi company. I’m simply an average, mid western concerned pet parent who refuses to let the greed of corporate dog food companies ruin the lives and the health of my dogs with my own money. For all of you pet parents who lost your loved ones, I know how hard it is to go home to an empty house and see their empty bowls or their leash. Someday down the road, the scars will heal and maybe if you’re lucky a new little life will find its way to you and melt your heart all over again.

I agree with researching these pet companies. One thing to remember as I found out when I called about one “natural” pet food… Ask them specifically if they use Menu foods for ANYTHING. One of the companies I called said they were not on the recall list, however, when I asked them specifically if they used Menu foods for “anything” they said “yes”. They said they use them for canning one of their brands. In other words, this “natural” pet food is tied in with Menu foods on some level. Thats the problem with this. We don’t know where these places manufacture. This is horrid!

First of all my vet has always warned me about substandard food and insisted that “humangrade” food was best for my pets. My dog Jaeger was diagnosed with a medical condition that required fish and potato diet. The specailty vet recommended Eukanuba (dry). My vet told me about Flint River Ranch a humangrade pet food. Well my two cats were on Friskies and Jaeger often would clean up their left overs. I couldn’t take the chance of him eating cheap food that was not good for him so I confidently changed to Iams fish moist food for my cats. Unfortunately my eldest cat became lethargic on Monday. I quickly made a call to my pet dietician and asked for Flint River Ranch cat food. (dry). I wasn’t going to take any chances. By Wednesday night after many vet visits where he had bloodwork done and IVs for dehydaration, he passed away The vet said that his bloodwork showed he had high numbers 200. . I just took my other cat for bloodwork to make sure that her kidneys are fine. I am waiting for results. I do want regulation on pet food and Menu Foods should pay for the vet bills. But don’t kid yourself there is no monetary value you could possibly put on my Basti’s life. I want them to know that . This is not a monetary issue entirely, this is a character issue and an inhumane act.

My 14 year-old feline “Tailgate” stopped eating on Friday, March 16 and became larthegic. After researching Menu Foods recall list and identify Eukanuba’s Flaked w/Select Tuna in Sauce, and date/plant code was in our pantry I took him to the Veterinarian. His blood chemistry re kidney functions were/are off the chart . . . he has been hospitalized since Tuesday, March 20 . . . PH level has been lowered but CREA and BUN readings are still very high . . . he is drinking water and on IV fluids, been given medication for mouth sores and pain . . . I am sitting with him 4 to 6 hours each day in the hospital . . . taking it day-by-day and praying.
These people/companies must be held accountble. There is no excuse, these critters are our children . . .

They have the most money and staffs of lawyers - all to just prove US wrong. Their goal is to make the public look like a bunch of liars and would be theives. No matter how glaringly obvious the crime is AND no matter how many times they admit their crime and publish it -
Their DEEP POCKETS will line other DEEP POCKETS. They figure it will soon be forgotten and swept out to sea, never to be heard about again.
And, I hate to admit it, but that is the norm. It is just forgotten.
I WILL NEVER FORGET MY PET - NOR - FORGIVE THEM.
I will forever wish them all the hell of the world and a horrible death.

Oh, please. There was great cause for worry and now there is time reflect and there is legitimate basis for some upset, but this blanket “blame the company” like it’s some nameless, faceless corporate veil devoid of heart and soul is now getting ridiculously riddled with “attack mode” borne of upset, yes, but just Step Back for a sec. E.g.: A Marj Wiener writes, “March 21st, 2007 at 6:57 pm - The horrible little secret has now been exposed — pet owners have been paying the marketing costs of brand-name pet food retailers — all of whom are merely selling the same product. Now that that product is tainted, they are all exposed for the charlatans they are. Consumers should be protected from such marketing fraud. Our pets are frequently child-surrogates or childrens’ companions. They are certainly family members. Shame on these awful pet companies.”
Anyone ever been in business? and I don’t mean some “Home Office” eBay venture, I mean cold, hard store-front, vendors and suppliers to buy from, manufacturers and wholesellers to contend with, and so on? I’m a pet owner who’s so madly in love with my bay-bees it’s beyond the beyond but I tell you, you have GOT to evalute the data a bit better before posting. The fact that the foodstuffs all have wheat glutin in common (as far as I can tell from what I’ve read so far) does not mean that all of these companies and outlets are selling the “same” thing just packaged differently. Sigh - the idiocy of the American populace. Do a bit more research! And you get what you pay for, so don’t complain about varied qualities of cat and dog foods. There are TONS of publications, sites, references and research documentations about what a good / natural / workable diet is for a domesticated pet. Gather the info, consult a vet or two, and create your own. Think *any* of the ones you buy are found “in the wild”? all have gravies and fillers and when in history did a wild dog graze on corn? Get the idea. We all of us or most of us use prepared foods for our pets and which to use is a highly controversial subject unto itself.
Tainted foods or ingredients for complex-formula foods (as in, more then a few ingredients!), especially when imported, can only be watched and regulated as much as Quality Control and snap-and-pop checklisting can oversee. One cannot check every batch of every aspect/ingredient, and there has to be a degree of trust in purchasing. To have your home robbed and subsequently mistrust all people because robbers are a member of the group called the human race, is ludicrous. To even narrow it down to wrong-targetting all copys because they somehow did not know of this one person and his intentions and timing to get to your exact home, is equally ludicrous. We all do the best we can in society. These companies are anguishing and suffering enough. To write or to conscience the viewpoint, “I will forever wish them all the hell of the world and a horrible death.” is unconsciensiable. You may not get over the death of your pet (as is understandable) - but get over yourSELF. Honest errors are made. If we also want these things sorted out (including prevention for the future), we have to let these folks do the legwork, with no knee-jerk reactions, no deaths not attributable to the tainting to be “counted” (or WE suffer a disservice by the companies evaluating incorrect data thus delaying the true sort-out). If you’re wildly upset (as I would be) about the death of a pet, seek others to help console you in the right forum, see your religious leader, this type of thing (skip the useless psych crap and their drugs, you don’t “get over” things that way). If you feel outrage or righteous indignation that such tainting could occur, and be a part of a solution and not a blast of stone-throwing. HELP these guys. Find a way to help gather info, organize info. Don’t include comments such as is on this very web site…I was interested in it until I read the little jab on the page about Menu Foods taking financial responsibility: “ABC News coverage of the press conference reports that Menu Foods “would reimburse pet owners who can trace their pets’ illnesses to the company’s products.†This should never have been a question. It should have been assumed from the moment they went into the pet food business. ” The part THIS SHOULD HEVER HAVE BEEN A QUESTION. There in nothing in the article (”reporting”, supposedly, not opining) that there was a question. Give them a chance to fully, fully sort things out before offering up financial compensation. They’re of no use to anyone Out Of Business. Go for their hide and a pint of blood? They’ll be out of business in no time. If they bucked to all the passion and also erroneous data floating around, Menu Foods will be paying for any dog or cat whose died in the past few months, regardless.
If they don’t buckle, they seem heartless. Put yourself in THEIR position. Run a business sometime and have employees, brokers, buyers, liaisons, vendors and suppliers, and try to micro-manage them all. Can’t be done. You do the best you can. I daresay this company has done a fantastic job in the past providing food for our animals. Take a few deep breaths and stop the Attack mode. Then attack the true source of the tainting, whatever that may be. A bad employee or two, bad manufacturers or standards in another country or shipping line or- or - or - … and find the correct targets to take to task.

Julie in Florida: If you want to feed your animals food thats contaminated with RAT POISON simply because you feel sorry for “business owners” and all of their “trials and tribulations”, then you need to recheck your priorities and give your animals away to a shelter where they’d be more safe. To some of us, these are OUR CHILDREN!! Do you have kids?? Imagine if a baby food company found RAT POISON in their strained peas and infants were suffering and dying a horrible death because of it. Would you still feel bad for the poor little businessmen then? The idiocy of the American populace?? WE ARE NOT IDIOTS, WE ARE ANGRY AND OUTRAGED!! Listen to yourself! You are cold and heartless. Thousands of people have lost or will lose their family members and all you do is scold them for being upset because their animals were POISONED! You are blaming the people because they didn’t research their dog food more closely?? Do you research the soup in your cabinet or the milk in your refridgerator? Of course not, you TRUST that the food is safe. If you’re so much more superior than the rest of us, what do you feed your animals?? Please enlighten our poor, “idiotic” souls with your extensive knowledge of the subject.
