Petition to Require Pet Food Companies to be Held Accountable for Damages
Request that the U.S. Congress enact legislation to require pet food manufacturers and the companies that market those pet food brands to be held financially liable for any medical costs related to or contributing to the illness and/or death of a pet that can be reasonably attributed to the food consumed by the pet. And that all pet foods include the name of the manufacturer, not just the brand under which it is sold.
This petition is in response to the thousands of pet parents and owners who have suffered under the Menu Foods recall and their slow response that started on March 16th, 2007.
Sign after the jump.
Or read about all the latest news surrounding the recall.
In creating this petition, our motive is three-fold:
- First, we want to ease the pain and suffering of those who have lost their pets due to mistakes and negligence of pet food makers. The loss or illness of a pet can be emotionally devastating. On top of it, the financial burden of uninsured veterinary treatment can be a double-whammy, leading pet parents and their families to significant financial damage — often affecting other family members such as kids and the elderly. This legislation will create a venue for settling these cases fairly and out of court, eliminating the need for a lengthy court case, which companies rely on in order to reduce the likelihood of payout.
- Second, create a financial motive for pet food makers and marketers to set higher standards for pet food. We want to let them know that consumers are interested in higher-grade pet food. And that the longer a company waits in issuing warnings or recalls related to their product, the larger the potential financial damage. This new law would hold the manufacturers (often smaller, less financially sound organizations) and also the larger corporations that market the branded foods — who ultimately control what goes in them.
- Third, a clear public disclosure of who actually makes the food. Since the financial liability falls to the brand as well as the manufacturer, the name of the company that actually produced the food should be obvious to the consumer. How much clearer would this recall have been if the food was labeled “Made by Menu Foods”?
Once the final tally of the pet deaths is complete, the petition will be delivered to the head of the congressional committee that controls FDA funding (Dave Obey, D-WI, chairman of House Appropriations Committee).

They need to be held responsible. They aren’t reporting all the deaths that are occuring at an alarming rate. some of these deaths date back into November. They knew they had a problem and waited almost a month to recall.

The horrible little secret has now been exposed — pet owners have been paying the marketing costs of brand-name pet food retailers — all of whom are merely selling the same product. Now that that product is tainted, they are all exposed for the charlatans they are.
Consumers should be protected from such marketing fraud. Our pets are frequently child-surrogates or childrens’ companions. They are certainly family members. Shame on these awful pet companies.

I am in total agreement with the Petition to Require Pet Food Companies to be Held Accountable for Damages
March 21st, 2007 at 8:23 pm
It is not only unacceptable that these companies knowingly allowed tainted pet food to be sold, and subsequently consumed by our pets, it is criminal. Our pets are our best friends and constant companions; for some they serve as our eyes and ears, for others they are our only source of unconditional love, and for all of us who have pets, they are important members of our families and we need them and love them as such. For all that they give to us, they deserve so much better than to be poisoned by people whose only concern is covering up their negligence and worrying about their bottom line.
In my opinion, those responsible for this heinous act of criminal negligence are the real animals in this scenario, and they must be held accountable.

Even worse, some of us are going out of our way to get “healthy” or special food for our companion animals… and some of THESE brands are also ending up in the recall.
This is a huge concern for me, since I am disabled, and my animal is MORE than a companion… she helps me be able to live on my own. She helps me manage. I’d really be lost if she got sick!

It’s a great idea, but it’ll be an uphill battle… just look at how long it took and how many pets lives were lost before the airlines finally decided to start climate controlling their cargo bays and putting in rules for handling of checked animals

It is sad that we must read your blog to find out the most reliable and detailed information on this tragic situation. We all thank you for that.
We have another solution. After twice returning the recalled food (first Nutro then the Purina), we are now simply making our own soft dog food (which we mix 50 / 50 with hard dog food nuggets that we have purchased for years from Solid Gold) for our two toy poodles out of food that we are also eating ourselves: chicken, rice, carrots, and chicken stock. Our dogs love it!!
If vast numbers of fellow pet owners switched to their own home-made food (at least as a supplement) then it would send a clear message to the pet food industry.

As I sign this, my 5-year-old, previously healthy cat is lying in an animal hospital fighting for his life. He trusted me, and I feel as if I have let him down. They need to find out how this happened and prosecute all those who knew about this prior to the recall. Had the food been pulled from the shelves when it was first known that there may have been a problem, I wouldn’t have purchased the food which sickened my cat.

Thank you for keeping us up to date and the endless hours you contribute to keeping corporate America accountable. I started my own pet food company nine years ago when my German Shepherd died of cancer when he was only five. There is FAR too much the general public does not know about pet food and your petition is a breath of fresh air.
I will post this on my website and actively support making it as widely known as possible.
Thanks again!!!

My 6 month old kitten is at the vet’s right now recovering from a violent illness of a mysterious nature. When I first took her there she was vomiting blood. She’s had every kind of test including barium xrays. Last week she ate some Iam’s tuna flakes with sauce from another batch than the ones which are posted as being tainted. If I find out that it was the food that caused this……….
I’m not in favor of the government regulating our lives but it seems we may need it when there are low standards for certain industries. As the airline industry needs a passenger bill of rights maybe the animals of our country need theirs too. They wouldn’t if people did their jobs as they were supposed to and common sense courtesy was extended. This whole thing is really sickening but maybe it’s what it takes for the industry standards to be raised.

i have a dying cat at the vets right now. i have been feeding her the nutro natural choice wet food for about 5 months now. she seems to be progressing but her kidney levels are not changing. my family and i (including our pets) are very saddened by this. i am trying to get a hold of a lawyer to file suit against this horrible company that has known so long about this contaminated food. if they would have let us know sooner we would not be in the position right now. thank goodness for the banfield animal clinic in petsmart said they are not charging for any vet bills to us that we have/are incurring while she is there and still living. we are keeping our fingers crossed that our cat gets better and comes back home alive.

97330 Bobbie Schroering My Precious perfect Yorkie 2lbs.10 ozs. died this Sunday. She was my little Angel for 13 years. I adored her. She was so loving and kind. She had severe diahhrea and bloody projectile vomiting. I was feeding my dogs Nutro canned . She recovered after 3 vet visits I.V’s, and lots of 24 hr. love and care. A week later she died. I knew before I even heard of the recall that it was the food. I talked with I clerk at the pet store and told him that I knew it was the food. Today I was sent to this website. I never expected this loose to be so terribly excruciating and painful. I protected and deeply loved this little adorable baby. I held her in my arms as she passed on.I told her how grateful I was to have had her for my Little darling. I thanked her for being such a good little girl. I was devastated, watching her struggle ,she could barely breathe. She was a part of our lives for 13 years, I will miss her so much,I can not express how sad I am. I miss her little pitter patter as she followed me from room to room. I miss her beautiful little face and her kisses.

I THINK IT’S UNFORGIVEABLE THAT A COMPANY SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS AND STILL CONTINUE TO PUT OUT A DEADLY PRODUCT!! ALSO, I THINK IT GOES BACK MUCH FURTHER THAN 12/2006, AS MY CAT GOT SUDDEN RENAL FAILURE/DIABETIC SXS. LAST JULY, AND SHE’S NEVER BEEN SICK A DAY IN HER 15 YRS. OF LIFE! I FED HER IAMS, AND SOME OTHER “GOOD” CAT FOODS!! FORTUNATELY, SHE SURVIVED, AFTER I SPENT ABOUT $2000. TO SAVE HER, AND WITH A LOT OF LOVE, AND PRAYERS FROM MYSELF AND FRIENDS! HOWEVER, I STILL HAVE TO GIVE HER AZODYL AND EPAKITIN, TO MAKE SURE SHE IS OK! I WANT TO SUE THESE BASTARDS FOR EVERY PENNY THEY MADE ON THE ILLNESS OF OUR BELOVED COMPANION ANIMALS/FRIENDS!!-KDO;

My heart breaks for those who have lost their babies as a result of the toxic foods. My 18 year old tabby cat, Scratcher, has been in the hospital since Tuesday with enlarged kidneys. He was fed Authority, Nutro Gourmet Classics and Sophisticat wet food brands. His kidney values seem stable (for his age), so we’re hoping it’s an infection, not renal failure. Our other kitties seem Ok. Unfortunately, I discovered I had fed recalled food (Mixables) to our Dobie, Sadie, since last summer. Although she seems fine, we had her blood tested…still waiting for the results. If anything happens to my “kids”, I’ll feel so guilty. We will actively support and sign the “Accountability Petition”.

It would appear that the same safety and hygienic measures used
for products for human consumption are not used for products for
pet consumption. Delay in recall seems to have cost many pet

This cavalier treatment of pets and the people who love them dearly has got to stop. Selling spoiled eggs, carcinogens, and the ground-up bodies of euthanized pets in pet food has got to stop. Delayed recalls in the event of food quality/safety issues has got to stop. Non-disclosure of the names of brokers to whom suspect ingredients are traced has got to stop. Higher standards! Accountability! Transparency! Enforceability! All these things have got TO START.

Carol Sundell 48187. I agree food companies should be held accountable for the deaths of pets from their food. I feel so sorry for all those people that had to spend money out on vet bills and some that have lost pets my heart goes out to you. I used to feed nutro to my Dals and found them in serious problems one day with kidney failure about 4 years ago. Gosh the vet bills alone were really high. I know they claim it wasn’t going on back then, but you wonder. I lost them both one to heart failure and one to kidney failure before their time. I now feed my dogs kumpi food and I’m very happy with the turn around in them. I too searched for various safe foods and found it hard to find a company that didn’t have a recall. I did for a period of time cook my dogs own food. Finally a canine officer and trainer turned me onto the food for my dogs when he saw all the different brands I tried that the collie wouldn’t eat or the Dalmatian. Both are service dogs and I’m very pleased with the food and their coat has a natural shine without a lot of grooming. Thanks for a wonderful product. You have convenienced me to stay with with the products just by the changes in my new pair of canines.

My cats are my best friends, every day I’m astounded with the unconditional love they give me, and to think that these companies sold me food that could have killed them makes me sick. I’ve known for awhile that pet food companies have only their pocketbooks in mind at the expense of our pets’ health, but this is the last straw. They’ve lost me as a customer forever. I’m going RAW. And if my cats get sick from having eaten their stinking food, count me in on every lawsuit there is. They messed with the wrong pet owner.

I’m not a litigious individual, and I don’t believe in frivolous lawsuits. But in cases like this where so many pets and pet owners have been harmed, and there was a delay in the time of the recall from when the company knew there was a problem, there is clearly a need for these companies to be held accountable.

My perfectly healthy 7 year old cat died on 3/10/07. I caught her eating my dogs Nutro Natural Choice dry dog food the day before. As a result, I took my other cat and dog to the vet to make sure they were ok. Got the blood tests back today - cat is healthy, dog has an increased enzyme count in his kidneys. Is it a coincidence, or is there more to this story? I’m extremely concerned this isn’t limited to the wet food.

The simple fact they do not post the many deaths and illness’s is very alarming. The same regulations should be for my pets food as well as ours. Since they are our responsiblity, it is their responsiblity to us, to maintain the decent balance of their food. Not poison our pets, because it is cost effective to them.

Officially, my cat had a bloodclot and complications. But I think a number of those complications could have pointed back to the food he ate. He had Iams canned sometimes. He was one of the best friends I ever had. He was only 13. We could have been together for another 5 years.

It makes me so sad to read of all the people who have lost their beloved pets. I am grateful that our spoiled little cat baby is okay, and I hope that her food doesn’t appear on the list in the future. She has eaten Fancy Feast for years and so far everything seems to be fine. Menu Food should be held accountable, but so should the supplier of whatever ingredient it turns out to be that was contaminated. I hope other pet food manufacturers are aware of who that is and will come forward if they have been supplied by that company. My sense of security is a little shaky until I know for sure that no other manufacturers have been affected. Answers seem to be slow in coming.

I think that most people regard their pets as family members and these pet food companies need to realize that if they themselves wouldn’t want to feed the crap they are manufacturing to their own family members why would we (the consumers) want to feed it to them either? I think that menu foods should be held accountable. They failed to act quickly and I still don’t think pet owners have the “whole” story, and I fear they never will. This company instead of coming forth and trying to save as many pets lives as possible decided to hide behind their wall of corporate greed to milk and mooch as much money out of their products as possible, and instead of consoling pet owners, taking action, and taking responsibility for their actions they commented and complained about how much the recall was going to cost them as if to say you should feel sorry for them because they lost ton of money. They have the nerve to say this despite the fact they have taken away something from people across the country that money can’t buy. Pets lives, our family members lives. For those whose pets became ill but survived how many years, months, weeks have this company shaved off of your pets lives? What are the long term effects? What will the bills incurred end up being in the future because of this? No matter how hard the pet food industry tries to suck up, they are too late, theres one thing they can’t give us back, our pets lives, health, or longevity. For this these pet food companies and menu foods should suffer. I personally will never purchase, buy, or use ANY brand pet food found on the recall list, manufactured by menu foods, or in any way related to those involved. I can not and will not put trust back in these companies. On a final note pet food manufacturers should be made to clearly state which manufacturer makes their products and also the plant code locations so that in the event of a recall there is more organization and the products can be removed from store shelves as quickly as possible, provided the company comes forth before the problem becomes crisis unlike menu foods sorry attempt at swift, effective, action. I am enraged by the way this was handled, and that it happened in the first place, and my heart goes out to everyone who fed their pets any of these products.

I hope all the people at Menu Foods enjoy all the money they made, cause they have no souls. So slow to respond to the complaints because doing the right thing would cost them $$$. I feel for all those who lost their furry family members. I hope these money hungry, soulless companies like this go down in flames.

It is unconscionable that nearly a month elapsed before any Media report on this. It is further disgraceful that Veterinary Professionals were not gvine a heads up and warned to be looking for this problem. How many pets died needlessly? One day! one days notice could have meant an animal could survive. Its also about time that packaging include the processing facility in order to avoid needing to surf through a maze of cover up and double talk when people are looking to the source for a problem. I hop the law suits bury Menu Foods. Its about time to smarten up and reqire proper food preparation practices across the board.

I think that better regulations are a good idea, however the biggest problem is not the laws but the enforcement of these laws. It’s a sad reality that while there are many people that take pride in their work and providing good quality and safe foods, there are many many more that are only here to make a proffit and could care less who or what gets hurt in the process.
I was lucky that my 3 kitties were not affected by this, but a couple of my friends were not and have incured hundreds of dollars of vet bills to have their pets tested and treated from getting sick off of the tainted foods. They are lucky though that now vets know what to look for and did not loose them to an unknown illness like so many have already.

i don’t happen to believe that it is just the ‘wet’ food that has been contaminated. i had a rescue boxer female who died at the end of january suffering from acute kidney failure of unknown origin. she was eating a dry form of nutro natural choice lamb and rice and was also on a supplement (which was in a pouch) to boost her immune system. our other two dogs were having intermittent episodes of vomitting/diarrhea having been on a short term amount of iams chicken and rice, also the dry version. there’s no telling which item was the culprit. but you have not idea the agonizing, helpless experience watching a beloved pet who had already had a traumatic life, to die so quickly before your eyes before she was able to receive any medical help. her veterinarian could not explain her short term and extreme illness, describing it as very, very rare. princess did not make it to her second birthday.
i compel this company to be fully forthcoming with their information. i do not believe for a second that it is just limited to the ‘wet’ version of their production. wheat/gluten is found in the dry product as well and should be fully investigated by the FDA!!!

I would wish that every decision-making executive of each and every company involved in this horrible mess would be made to suffer the exact same pain and death that they have caused for so very many of our four-legged babies. We must find ways to keep this from ever happening again. Labels must contain ALL information as to the production of these foods; Brand name, Production company name, Plant name and location, full and detailed list of each and every ingredient with % of each included. There must be strict and stringent laws put in place to hold these companies, and the individuals of these companies, wholly responsible for their products and whatever damage and suffering their products may cause. There must also be a means to enforce these laws. May God bless and have mercy on all of those affected by this and may He help us all to find the means to keep this from ever happening again.

My pets mean the world to me and anything that can/will harm them is totally unacceptable. Pets are members of families and bring such unconditional love to thos of us who are fortunate enough to be members of their world. They depend on us for everything and those companies who are involved in the well being of pets should be held accountable for anything that can be harmful or deadly to them.
If any companies will not accept this responsibility they should cease operations immediately.

zip: 04864, Carolyn Damon - I believe I now know what killed my 4 1/2 year old Brittany in 2005. She developed vomiting, diarrhea, was leaking urine, and even though I spent $5000 trying to save her life no one had a clue what to do. I had an autopsy done at Portland Emergency Veterinary Clinic in Portland, Maine. She had aplastic anemia. No red blood cells in her body. Her spine was like jello I was told. I am angry. This was now declared on CNN today to be contamination by rat poison. I am outraged. Rat poison would have had the effects on my dog Rheba that I mentioned. I now cook for my current. I have NO remaining confidence in any pet food on the market and will not until regulations are put in place AND enforced that require ongoing toxicological monitoring of all products made by the pet food industry. In the absence of effective oversight of this corrupt industry, every time we open a can or a bag of pet food and feed it to our beloved companions, we’re basically playing Russian roulette wtih their lives.
Oh and . . .thanks again to China and to our government’s disastrous global trade policies for bringing the rat-poison-laced wheat product into this country in the first place. We should be boycotting Menu foods and all pet food manufacturers who use them as a supplier. We should also be boycotting EVERYTHING that comes into this country from China.

I had been feeding my ferals this brand (I feed about 8-10) and trap them for TNR. Two weeks ago, I trapped 2 little ones for TNR, and when I called to see how they were doing, I was told that one of them had died!!! We pet owners purchase feed, relying heavily on manufacturers promise of good nutrition and quality of their products.
Manufacturers MUST be held responsible for poisoning our pets ! They should, by all rights, be forced to reimburse pet owners for vet bills created by their lack of due diligence.
Just why didn’t the manufacturer of the affected foods not discover this dreadful ingredient? Aren’t they supposed to analyze their product, as they state?

I hope a law is made that no company can have the market on this. There would never have been all these losses…………..

Mary Moren 85835 - Pretty sure this recall will not just be for wet/pouch foods! AND I’m pretty sure it won’t be just recent events! We fed our two Beagles dry Science Diet and lo-n-behold… a healthy 5 year with normal blood tests and normal annual exam just a couple months earlier was diagnosed with… yes… acute kidney disease out of the blue.. The vet said she couldn’t figure it out but she did note there had been a few “other cases recently” which was odd in dogs so young…. The saddest part was after treating the first dog for over six months and watching her get worse even with hospitalization, IV’s, Xrays, daily dose of fluids, different meds including steroids and several thousand dollars later…. she had to be put down due to the terrible suffering. Then a very short 11 months the 2nd dog was gone! NEWS FLASH…. This began in August 2005 and the first dog down was January 2006 and second dog down in December 2006. We rescued an older Beagle recently and she appears healthy but immediately threw out the Science Diet last night AFTER I went to the vet and they said they thought the recall would grow to include the dry food too! We will gladly join any Class Action in order to effect changes for the future well being of our of our animals here and abroad as necessary!

Just by pure luck, my cat was being fed foods not on the list. Isn’t there any type of quality control or are stray cats and dogs (taster animals) cheaper than equipment and technicians. Crucify the idiots.

10023, Cynthia Weinman I am so furious at Menu Foods, but even more so at Nutro since they are the brand name and it is likely that they knew about this for a while. Our cat Dennis started to refuse to eat a month ago (he probably knew there was something wrong with the Nutro food) and when I think of the weeks we spent urging our poor cat to eat this poisonous food, it makes me want to cry. Thank god he’s OK, but no thanks to these greedy manufacturers who don’t care about our animals, only about their money. Nutro’s punishment should be that their CEO and vice presidents should have to eat the food they sold to us — that certainly would make them more careful in the future.

The pet food companies should be accountable for their actions or lack of action in this case. For most of my family and friends, our pets are our family, and these companies are killing our “children” inadvertly and they should be held accountable for this.

Once complaints began to come in, this food was tested and as many as one in six animals died during those tests but the manufacturer still did not recall the foods. Pet owners bought into their claims of having a “happier, healthier pet” if they purchased their products. The manufacturers got their money and pet owners all over are left only with carcasses!

The pet food companies should be accountable for their actions or lack of action in this case, including the FDA. The FDA is not doing enough to make sure that the food that we feed our pets (my case my children) is safe. The food that we feed them is also affecting their immune system and this is the reason why our pets die of cancer.

Us pet owners are under alot of stress worrying about if our brand of dog food will be safe– Our furkids are very precious to us and not just consider property but a member of our families. The pet food companies should be held responsible we put our trust in them and they have viloated our trust. Thank you

It is easy to go and buy just any pet food. But pet food, like anything else, is a “get what you pay for” deal. Yes, pet food companies have neat advertising and cute puppies and kittens on their packaging, and they will swear up and down the block that it is the best, most nutritous, most safe pet food you can possibly buy. But a public unwilling to educate themselves on what goes into the making, testing, and marketing of something they will feed a pet, possibly an expensive pet , at the very least an extension of ones family, is a public that is almost asking for a disastrous event such as this to happen. That sounds harsh, but really, a little research goes a long way. Until that kind of thing can happen, I say hold them responsible not only for the owned pets who have died, but for all of the animal lives wasted during their ridiculous testing procedures that are SUPPOSED to prevent an owners animal from dying. If this was one of my dogs,I WOULD WANT TO KICK SOMEONES ASS IN A REAL BAD WAY. Feed Kumpi.

My Family at this point are afraid to feed our pets any wet foods, and were also advised by our vet that any of the softfoods, treats, or even dry foods for pets manufactured by this company should be avoided of which really narrows what we can feed our pets, of which has become very costly..
And how do we know that somehow this was not done on purpose by China, with all that is going on the polictical front with this country and China…

Menu foods has hurt and possibly killed our two cat-children and I believe they should pay. Money alone will not do. The CEO, CFO and COO must resign for the good of the company or whatever is left of this miserable company after all the litigation that is sure to come. After their termination, we, the pet owners, should be allowed to get our hands on them so they can see how we do in the Big Apple. I purchased a six-pack of Iams canned food for my dog in January as a “treat” food - he LOVES to eat canned food. He suffered severe diarrhea but luckily no complications - that I am aware of. (I had NO idea it could have been caused by his food…I assumed he had gotten into something). I had to purchase special food from the vet for him to eat for a few days until he was better. Approximately 2-3 weeks later, I fed him another can out of that 6-pack which he VERY reluctantly ate (HE must have known something about it wasn’t right) and after 2-3 hours was having difficulty urinating, running in circles outside with diarrhea and again, I had NO REASON to suspect the food. He was miserable for 1-2 days. Now all his misery makes sense. If you can’t trust a high-end brand like Iams - then who? This “recall” is too little too late. My dog was lucky -there were others that were not and I feel so, so sad for their owners. My Buddy has been my best friend for 10 years now and I NEVER thought I would have to worry about his food killing him. And the worst thing about this is they DIDN’T LET PEOPLE KNOW IMMEDIATELY ABOUT THIS SO THEY COULD POSSIBLY HAVE PREVENTED THEIR PETS DEATHS. Makes me sick - money and public relations are more important, right?!?!? We all are aware that bad things can happen and we are all subject to that, but gee, let’s wait and see how many deaths there are before we actually WARN people because maybe they’ll never figure it out………. or make the connection that it’s the food………..or just blow it off………………….. or……………………..eventually they’ll forget about it………………or…….

This is a great country. In this country we have the ability to be self sufficient, meaning we don’t need to import crap from foreign countries! If government started taxing the companies that outsource their products maybe it could be a big plus for the American economy.
We make it too easy for companies to make products in foreign countries, it needs to stop!
I know full well that there are American farmers who grow wheat. The recent pet food tragedy could have been avoided by using wheat from the USA! Although cats and dogs don’t actually need wheat in their diets, I know that improper pet diets will continue (unfortunately) At least use products from US suppliers!
Pet food companies need to be regulated, not just said that they are!

NorthEast Ohio alpaca farmers recently lost several of their herd due to Land O’Lakes inadvertently putting antibiotics into alpaca feed. (The antibiotics were supposed to go into chicken feed.) Female alpacas cost anywhere between $20,000 to $40,000 each with prize male studs going for up to $300,000 but moreso is the emotional loss. These poor people were devastated not only because of the financial loss but because they love these gentle animals, calling them a “huggable investment”. ANY food product, whether it’s for humans, birds, mammals, whatever - all living beings are worth ensuring their food source is safe for consumption. Won’t somebody step up to the plate and be accountable, for God’s sake?

our cats, rascal + lucy, have been eating nutro wet food in the pouch for years (in addition to the dry nutro). we stopped feeding them this food as soon as we heard from a friend of the specific recall for the wet nutro products. however, since then, we have learned that the list of recalled foods is much, much larger. we took them to the vet for a check up + blood tests as soon as we could. a day later, the vet called us with the unfortunate news that both of our girls had elevated levels of toxins in their system, most likely due to eating this food. we had essentially been poisoning them for the last few months, and had no idea, which is heartbreaking. we had to take them back to the vet, where they have been put on IVs to try to flush the toxins from their systems. the vet will be testing their blood again to see if the treatment is helping. hopefully, with this treatment, our girls will be better + home with us soon. but, so many other are less fortunate than us, and have already lost their dear friends to this, and my heart goes out to all of you.

I rescued 10 felines last year. Five of them died at Christmas and I was extensively questioned about poisonous items in my house when I rushed the first one to the emergecy hospital. How do I prove this “killing house” is responsible? No wonder they did nothing for 3 months and I think it was going on before that. Now they say if you can prove it. They are just trying to cut their losses. DAMNIT, I’d like to have cut my losses. I’d like to have my babies back. To make matters worse these murderers tested the food on cats and dogs. They finally admitted it when 7 died. THEY DO NOT NEED TO BE IN THE PET BUSINESS OF ANY KIND.

Although my cats were not given food on the recall list, every time I open a can of cat food I worry about the safety its contents. It is especially distressing to discover that many “super premium” pet foods are made by this manufacturer that has betrayed our trust. There should be regulations that the ingredients list and nutrition analysis be readable: black text on white or light colored background. The current 3 oz. Iams label lists its ingredients in tiny black text on very dark violet background — impossible to read even in bright lighting. What are they trying to hide?

We lost our Persian Garfield Jan 2 to kidney failure. He had not been sick . He quit eating, became lethargic, etc. We were devastated….did not know of tainted food in Jan.. We bought an new Persian kitty in Feb and began feeding him the leftover pouches and cans we had from Garfy. Now we are treating the kitty for kidney problems!!!! We threw away old opened packages (as we do other garbage) and we returned the unopened packages so they would not accidentally be fed…..we do have vet records and we do intend to try to be reimbursed for the vet costs…..Now we are afraid to buy pet food as who can we trust? I think the companies knew well before the products were recalled….they need to pay for the sick pet’s vet bills….WHY can’t these companies use wheat from American farmers who both need the business and are required follow American standards?

Our 8 year old Border collie died 2 weeks ago of kidney failure so bad, we had to put him to sleep. My vet questioned me about having rat poison around, but I told him I am an environmmentalist. I don’t use that kind of stuff. Next fear that someone had poisoned my animals. We continued feeding our two Tibetan Spaniels the same food since his death with one of them becoming ill. I am now making homemade dog food and recovery is happening at last. Our medical bills are not huge as he died so quickly and horribly, but the emotional bill is tremendous. I cry all the time and am afraid to feed my special friends. I fed the Iams slices in gravy and the little ones didn’t like it, so the big guy ate it all and died. I then gave the little guys Nutro chicken & rice dinner in can and they became sick. I still have full cans listed on the recall. My vet is filing this information, so I haven’t, but decided I should put my name on your list. Thanks. Nina

I lost my best friend Abby, a 1 year 11 month old 8 lb. Papillon 3 weeks ago, to kidney failure. She had been fed Nutro ultra since I bought her. The entire process is well documented from her admission to the hospital with blood tests ultra sound and at the end a necropsy of her kidneys. This all took place prior to the recall of the affected food but it all came together after that as my vet could not figure out why until then. I have since found 1 can from the list and still have it in my possession. Please get the truth to all the pets affected by this horrible event and make all involved accountable. Joyce Wood Zip 44039

This company, Menu Foods, in order save money, in the name of greed and the botom line, profit, sold out and bought cheap products from another country. They did not check the product and now beloved pets have died. They have died in the name of greed. Menu foods should be held accountable and those that have lost pets and suffered should be compensated. The compensation will do nothing for the loss of their pet, but Menu foods cannot be let off the hook. The best thing we can do is never buy commercial pet food from this company again. They use other dead animals that are diseased, even other companion pets in their foods. This company should pay for their greed.

In loving memory of Tyson, my 6 year old Boxer mix, who died Jan. 16, 2007. His test results were off the charts and he was gone in a matter of days, but never will be forgotten. He was fed Ol’Roy beef and chicken cuts in gravy along with Ol’Roy dry food.

My heart goes out to the entire pet family community. This is beyond catastrophic. Have one comment to make in regard to someone’s comment regarding SOLID GOLD pet food. I called them last week to check whether they processed their own food and was told they contract to a company called Diamond. I must agree it is scary to know what to feed our pets and just who or what companies can be trusted. Last year after researching about half dozen companies as to the contents of their foods because my vet was concerned about one of my dog’s liver, I settled on Nutro Lite. But with 4 types of food on the recall list, I will not support them after this. We pet owners need to never forget this -EVER-and to band together and stop buying from all of the companies on the list and also to make sure to check if a new “name” appears, that it is not the old company changing its name and operating under the same old standards.

If you didn’t investigate what you were feeding your pets, you have only yourself to blame. You blame the company for cheaping out, and look what you did. You bought the cheap food. Even the people who bought “super-premium” brands like Nutro & Iams cheaped out. There are plenty of organic and small batch foods available from companies who think of your pets as furbabies & family, just like you do. I must shamefully admit that I am guilty of the same. I thought Nutro “All-Natural” was a safe & economical choice, and guess what was on the list!? I don’t even feed my cat wet food, but you can bet I’ll be trashing the rest of the Nutro dry food I have and sacrificing a little more dough to do the right thing for her diet.
Like other people have said, this should be a wake-up call to investigate ALL processed foods we purchase, for ourselves and animals alike. Remember all the fuss about peanut butter a few weeks ago? Hmmm…..

To all the people who have lost their beloved furbabies, please accept my deepest sympathy. My heart goes out to you. My thoughts and prayers are also with those who are currently sick and are undergoing treatment.
While my dog wasn’t affected by this recall (THANK GOD), I am signing this petition because she very well could have been. Menu Foods needs to be held responsible for the pain and suffering of these animals as well as the suffering of the people who are mourning the loss of their best friend/child/family member or those who are currently caring for their sick pet. Menu Foods should not only be ordered to monetarily compensate all those pet owners who were affected by this (not that the money could ever begin to replace their loyal companions), but they should also be ordered to make a large donation to pet charities/organizations/shelters in addition to be forced to dissolve their company and business.
This is yet one more reason why the US should ban companies/corporations from outsourcing their business to other countries in order to save themselves money. Look at what this has cost so many people and now our pets too have had to pay a price. This is absolutely outrageous!

I just found out about the extended recall-I rarely feed my cats the wet food, but ran out of the dry, and had to feed them 2 pouches a week and a half ago. I was relieved to see that mine were produced before the date of the ones recalled, until now. So far, I see no sign of abnormal behavior, but am watching carefully until I can get them in for testing. My thoughts and prayers go out to all suffering right now….so many more than are being publicized. I only hope that as a result of this, stronger regulations and accountability are put in place.

First off, our hearts and prayers go out to those who lost their loved ones. I can’t imagine losing my animals in such a terrible way. Luckily I took our dogs off of Iams last year and have only fed them Kumpi foods since. Kumpi is an independent dog food company who I now COMPLETELY trust and I will never take them off it. I took them off of Iams simply because I didn’t know what was really in the food and I didn’t know what my dogs were eating. I researched online and found kumpi.com where a comparison chart of the ingredients major pet food companies (such as menu foods) put in their foods and was completely shocked with the results. The chart explained the ingredients in simple terms that I could understand and I finally realized that a funny commercial, great packaging, or a high price doesn’t necessarily mean that the product is quality. For any of those people that are concerned about their pets I highly recommend they visit www.kumpi.com and research for themselves. Menu foods has taken too many lives due to greed. They have broken up families, caused emotional scars, and have made hard working families pay thousands of dollars in medical bills to save the lives of their family members. They need to be stopped!!! If you truly love your pets, don’t give the greedy, commercial pet food industry your support or money any more. I am in no way affiliated with the kumpi company. I’m simply an average, mid western concerned pet parent who refuses to let the greed of corporate dog food companies ruin the lives and the health of my dogs with my own money. For all of you pet parents who lost your loved ones, I know how hard it is to go home to an empty house and see their empty bowls or their leash. Someday down the road, the scars will heal and maybe if you’re lucky a new little life will find its way to you and melt your heart all over again.

I agree with researching these pet companies. One thing to remember as I found out when I called about one “natural” pet food… Ask them specifically if they use Menu foods for ANYTHING. One of the companies I called said they were not on the recall list, however, when I asked them specifically if they used Menu foods for “anything” they said “yes”. They said they use them for canning one of their brands. In other words, this “natural” pet food is tied in with Menu foods on some level. Thats the problem with this. We don’t know where these places manufacture. This is horrid!

First of all my vet has always warned me about substandard food and insisted that “humangrade” food was best for my pets. My dog Jaeger was diagnosed with a medical condition that required fish and potato diet. The specailty vet recommended Eukanuba (dry). My vet told me about Flint River Ranch a humangrade pet food. Well my two cats were on Friskies and Jaeger often would clean up their left overs. I couldn’t take the chance of him eating cheap food that was not good for him so I confidently changed to Iams fish moist food for my cats. Unfortunately my eldest cat became lethargic on Monday. I quickly made a call to my pet dietician and asked for Flint River Ranch cat food. (dry). I wasn’t going to take any chances. By Wednesday night after many vet visits where he had bloodwork done and IVs for dehydaration, he passed away The vet said that his bloodwork showed he had high numbers 200. . I just took my other cat for bloodwork to make sure that her kidneys are fine. I am waiting for results. I do want regulation on pet food and Menu Foods should pay for the vet bills. But don’t kid yourself there is no monetary value you could possibly put on my Basti’s life. I want them to know that . This is not a monetary issue entirely, this is a character issue and an inhumane act.

My 14 year-old feline “Tailgate” stopped eating on Friday, March 16 and became larthegic. After researching Menu Foods recall list and identify Eukanuba’s Flaked w/Select Tuna in Sauce, and date/plant code was in our pantry I took him to the Veterinarian. His blood chemistry re kidney functions were/are off the chart . . . he has been hospitalized since Tuesday, March 20 . . . PH level has been lowered but CREA and BUN readings are still very high . . . he is drinking water and on IV fluids, been given medication for mouth sores and pain . . . I am sitting with him 4 to 6 hours each day in the hospital . . . taking it day-by-day and praying.
These people/companies must be held accountble. There is no excuse, these critters are our children . . .

They have the most money and staffs of lawyers - all to just prove US wrong. Their goal is to make the public look like a bunch of liars and would be theives. No matter how glaringly obvious the crime is AND no matter how many times they admit their crime and publish it -
Their DEEP POCKETS will line other DEEP POCKETS. They figure it will soon be forgotten and swept out to sea, never to be heard about again.
And, I hate to admit it, but that is the norm. It is just forgotten.
I WILL NEVER FORGET MY PET - NOR - FORGIVE THEM.

Oh, please. There was great cause for worry and now there is time reflect and there is legitimate basis for some upset, but this blanket “blame the company” like it’s some nameless, faceless corporate veil devoid of heart and soul is now getting ridiculously riddled with “attack mode” borne of upset, yes, but just Step Back for a sec. E.g.: A Marj Wiener writes, “March 21st, 2007 at 6:57 pm - The horrible little secret has now been exposed — pet owners have been paying the marketing costs of brand-name pet food retailers — all of whom are merely selling the same product. Now that that product is tainted, they are all exposed for the charlatans they are. Consumers should be protected from such marketing fraud. Our pets are frequently child-surrogates or childrens’ companions. They are certainly family members. Shame on these awful pet companies.”
Anyone ever been in business? and I don’t mean some “Home Office” eBay venture, I mean cold, hard store-front, vendors and suppliers to buy from, manufacturers and wholesellers to contend with, and so on? I’m a pet owner who’s so madly in love with my bay-bees it’s beyond the beyond but I tell you, you have GOT to evalute the data a bit better before posting. The fact that the foodstuffs all have wheat glutin in common (as far as I can tell from what I’ve read so far) does not mean that all of these companies and outlets are selling the “same” thing just packaged differently. Sigh - the idiocy of the American populace. Do a bit more research! And you get what you pay for, so don’t complain about varied qualities of cat and dog foods. There are TONS of publications, sites, references and research documentations about what a good / natural / workable diet is for a domesticated pet. Gather the info, consult a vet or two, and create your own. Think *any* of the ones you buy are found “in the wild”? all have gravies and fillers and when in history did a wild dog graze on corn? Get the idea. We all of us or most of us use prepared foods for our pets and which to use is a highly controversial subject unto itself.
Tainted foods or ingredients for complex-formula foods (as in, more then a few ingredients!), especially when imported, can only be watched and regulated as much as Quality Control and snap-and-pop checklisting can oversee. One cannot check every batch of every aspect/ingredient, and there has to be a degree of trust in purchasing. To have your home robbed and subsequently mistrust all people because robbers are a member of the group called the human race, is ludicrous. To even narrow it down to wrong-targetting all copys because they somehow did not know of this one person and his intentions and timing to get to your exact home, is equally ludicrous. We all do the best we can in society. These companies are anguishing and suffering enough. To write or to conscience the viewpoint, “I will forever wish them all the hell of the world and a horrible death.” is unconsciensiable. You may not get over the death of your pet (as is understandable) - but get over yourSELF. Honest errors are made. If we also want these things sorted out (including prevention for the future), we have to let these folks do the legwork, with no knee-jerk reactions, no deaths not attributable to the tainting to be “counted” (or WE suffer a disservice by the companies evaluating incorrect data thus delaying the true sort-out). If you’re wildly upset (as I would be) about the death of a pet, seek others to help console you in the right forum, see your religious leader, this type of thing (skip the useless psych crap and their drugs, you don’t “get over” things that way). If you feel outrage or righteous indignation that such tainting could occur, and be a part of a solution and not a blast of stone-throwing. HELP these guys. Find a way to help gather info, organize info. Don’t include comments such as is on this very web site…I was interested in it until I read the little jab on the page about Menu Foods taking financial responsibility: “ABC News coverage of the press conference reports that Menu Foods “would reimburse pet owners who can trace their pets’ illnesses to the company’s products.†This should never have been a question. It should have been assumed from the moment they went into the pet food business. ” The part THIS SHOULD HEVER HAVE BEEN A QUESTION. There in nothing in the article (”reporting”, supposedly, not opining) that there was a question. Give them a chance to fully, fully sort things out before offering up financial compensation. They’re of no use to anyone Out Of Business. Go for their hide and a pint of blood? They’ll be out of business in no time. If they bucked to all the passion and also erroneous data floating around, Menu Foods will be paying for any dog or cat whose died in the past few months, regardless.
If they don’t buckle, they seem heartless. Put yourself in THEIR position. Run a business sometime and have employees, brokers, buyers, liaisons, vendors and suppliers, and try to micro-manage them all. Can’t be done. You do the best you can. I daresay this company has done a fantastic job in the past providing food for our animals. Take a few deep breaths and stop the Attack mode. Then attack the true source of the tainting, whatever that may be. A bad employee or two, bad manufacturers or standards in another country or shipping line or- or - or - … and find the correct targets to take to task.

Julie in Florida: If you want to feed your animals food thats contaminated with RAT POISON simply because you feel sorry for “business owners” and all of their “trials and tribulations”, then you need to recheck your priorities and give your animals away to a shelter where they’d be more safe. To some of us, these are OUR CHILDREN!! Do you have kids?? Imagine if a baby food company found RAT POISON in their strained peas and infants were suffering and dying a horrible death because of it. Would you still feel bad for the poor little businessmen then? The idiocy of the American populace?? WE ARE NOT IDIOTS, WE ARE ANGRY AND OUTRAGED!! Listen to yourself! You are cold and heartless. Thousands of people have lost or will lose their family members and all you do is scold them for being upset because their animals were POISONED! You are blaming the people because they didn’t research their dog food more closely?? Do you research the soup in your cabinet or the milk in your refridgerator? Of course not, you TRUST that the food is safe. If you’re so much more superior than the rest of us, what do you feed your animals?? Please enlighten our poor, “idiotic” souls with your extensive knowledge of the subject.

The practices of irresponsible food suppliers have been causing countless
pet deaths every year? toxins in food are not only the one’s recenly found to cause death, fillers and coloring have caused organ damage ,thus shorting pets live for years. the pratices must be abolished.. trade with
unregulated former communist goverments is a dangerous idea? menufoods was looking a a way to maximise it’s profit. my cat was very ill
but survived. i WILL no longer use any food i find maunfactured by any company that trades with unregulated countrys. this is the TIP of the iceberg? the future of free trade, the saftey of people and their pets and childern demands safguards against dangerous practices, TERRORISM and
greed? i hope you will consider the impact change will make for the saftey
of all of us?

I’m glad everyone is trying to do something about this terrible situation.I am treating my precious Mr. Cat as we call him now , he has been diagnosed with renal failure, first stages. I feel Menu Foods should be held accountable for this situation & closed down, so they cannot do this again and it will show any other food company the public will not stand for the way they handle our safety, things are getting to relaxed ,first the spinach, then peanutbutter, now our special friends!!! enough is enough, !!!!!!
March 25th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
Jake Caeronas 04210. I feel they should be accountable, and they should have to disclose their manufacturing responsibility for the company for which it manuf. for. Many differ. distributors were affliated with menu foods, I have a few cans still which do not appear specifically to their recall list except the name on the label. My cat died from his only 2 weeks of exposure to canned cat food. Bad timing to introduce an adult cat to canned food due to his sensitivty to dry he was eating. It is amazing to see that name brands and store brands are probably identical in content except for the labeling and the costs. Only our pets know for sure about the content, and in this case it has proven, they all had the poison in them. One big batch, hundreds of different labels, all for one and we are all paying for their mistake.

My daughter’s dashhound died after consuming the Nutro brand recalled food for only 11 days, and suffering terribly painful side effects while in a pet hospital on IV’s for six days! It doesn’t matter that this was a pet that was lost - it was one of the most devastating deaths our family has ever experienced!

I am in total devastation. I have lost my handicapped cat whom I’ve nursed from the day he was born. He had a neurological disorder and was blind. He had seizures due to this disorder and was on meds to control them. There is no way that he could ever be replaced. One of a kind that never knew what a cat was. He went with me every where I went. He slept with me. He depended on me to care for him. There is so much I want to tell about him so everyone would know my loss. But I’ll be brief for now. He was my companion, my child and now he’s gone. If this company was testing the food on their poor lab animals, then they knew something long before they made it public. They can never repair the emotional damage that so many families have gone through because of this. I tried to get my baby to the vet, but they were so busy they couldn’t get him in. This was in February, the announcement was made March 17th, this is not acceptable. I know in the end God will take care of this and everyone involved will get their just. I don’t wish anything bad for anyone, but when you put the almighty dollar before life the you get what you deserve.
I, as others, don’t have the have any extra money. Everything I make I use to pay bills, feed my animals and survive. When I called the vets office I was told if I wanted to pay extra they would work him in. Now if they could work him in, why didn’t they just do it? I would have given my own life for Special, he was my baby. But I didn’t have any money and they want theirs right then. What do you do?
I had fed Special a pouch of the Special Kitty-Duck and Wild Rice, it was his favorite, on Sunday Feb.11th. About an hour after feeding him he started having seizures. This was strange because his meds had that under control. I never once thought it could be the food. By the next morning Monday Feb.12th he was lathargic, not eating or drinking, not going to the bathroom and his breath was awful. He was getting worse and I couldn’t get him in to see the vet so my only option was to stop his suffering and have him put down. I didn’t have any tests done, he was already too far gone and I didn’t want him to suffer anymore. I took pictures of him that day and that’s all I have left. Sad to say they just don’t show my true Special. He was 10 days shy of being 2 years and 8 months old. I miss my baby boy.

My Bene cat was effected by ingestion of Eukanuba Cuts & Gravy food purchased at Petsmart in Bothell. He is in treatment for renal failure and we are not clear if he has suffered permanent damage yet. He will be retested at the vet’s office tomorrow 3/26/07 after being on Sub Q fluids for 2 weeks. We are hopeful that we caught it in time but cannot be sure if we will lose him or not. This has been a very emotional and exhausting 3 weeks since it all started.

This is America. We must have accountability of big companies and safe foods for our pets. There must be punishment when these tragedies occur. There must be quality control and the quality control should not consist of feeding trials. We must know what’s in the food and who made it.
I will never again buy food from any of the companies who used Menu to produce their foods.

I’m signing this petition in hopes of better laws and regulations. I had my precious 17 year-old kitty, Jinxy, put down on Dec. 15, 2006. I had him tested on Dec. 8, 2006 — only 2 days after I bought the food. He had always been very healthy and I didn’t understand his rapid decline in health, of course, until now.
I had some of food left in my pantry and it matched the affected lot numbers. If you buy items at PetsMart with the PetPerks card, they can pull your file and email you what you’ve purchased. I had purchased pouches from several of the ones recalled. This makes me sick to my stomach to know that I feed my darling kitty poison. I’m very lucky that my other 2 kitties don’t like wet food or I would have their deaths on my conscience too.

Anyone making pet food out of meat that has been thrown\
away because it isn’t fit for human consumption should be
required to eat it first. Just because a pet is considered to be an “animal” by many non-pet lovers is no excuse to make
and sell the product. My cat is not just a pet to me. She is
just as important in my family as any other family member, and in some cases, more important. Don’t punish dogs and cats by feeding them garbage, because they are defenseless
beings and a thousand times better than the people making
the food they are now eating. Money talks loud, doesn’t it?

This has opened my eyes to the fallacy of “high quality” pet food. Never mind that the product I feed my beloved pets isn’t on the recall list (Nutro Ultra dry dog food), it might well be in the future. This is total deceit.

These beloved pets dying is an abomination!! Why aren’t these companys required to have better quality control than this? And if they don’t,…… how many other companys could serve food tainted for human consumption?
As far as I’m concerned this is just a test to see how far terrorists can go in our country, think about that when pass laws concerning our pets. If someone can do this to animals, then they can do it to humans too. Both are abominations, and everyone know that congress is bought by large corporations and they will sideskirt the laws of quality control for profit, because the corporations have no morals except the ones concerning enough profit in their pockets! And yes, I do beleive that it is this Bad!!! Get with it Law makers, you work for us!!!

Ingredients like wheat, corn, soy, etc., should not be in food for dogs and cats to begin with. We need better quality control in plants where pet food is made. The number of pet food recalls recently is getting out of hand.

I am MORE than OUTRAGED at the whole mess! It is just INCONCEIVABLE that ANY of this could EVER happen! WE all need to keep grouping together to make sure that change happens! EVeryone can also go to the pet connection at www.petconnection.com for more information and to also report their losses and illnesses. We also need to report directly to the companies that produce the food and the FDA. I have heard that a company out of colorado called Kumpi Pet Foods is supposed to be a good alternative choice, a small business with pet nutrition as it’s top priority. Hopefully some home made food recipes will follow.

I am sorry that I did not follow instructions earlier as I voted to save our pets, our family. Now I speak. To say that our pets are “property” not family tells us all that those who are in this “pet” business to “feed” “our pets” do not understand or deserve our business. These pets are a part of our family. They love us no matter what our flaws are. They assume, innocently as we do, that we will take care of them. Those of us who do take care of our family absolutely will not rest until we change the laws that affect our family, which also includes our pets as defined family members. How dare someone tell you and me that our pets are “just” property? Why then do our hearts ache with our loss of our pet, just as strongly as when we lose blood family members? Our family is not only our loved ones, but also our beloved pets. If there is anything, we should have learned is what we learn and observe from the aged in this country. Their pet stayed by their side when no one cared or was too busy to visit. Their dog or cat or whatever “pet” continued to make them get up in the morning and live and find purpose! If this is not so, then why do so many brillant individuals name their “pets” in their will? This loss felt by so many, should scream throughout this country and make change. We will hold you responsible for our loss until you understand; you will be told our stories repeatedly; you will accept responsibility, and you WILL say you are sorry and you will not make the same mistake ever again.

We have a deceased kitty, MOMO, and has a seriously ill Lab. Angel our Lab has survived. Our 3 elderly remaining kitty’s also ate Iams but so far they seem ok but we have no way of knowing.
We are still in possession of MOMO as we buried him on our property. Menufoods didn’t like hearing that our Vet was not allowed to destroy him. He died in my wife’s arms before we could get him back to the Vet to Euthanize him.
We do not know what will happen to Angel our Lab as she was so ill but only through luck she is still with us.
We have not been contacted back by MenuFoods.

I would like to see a provision for national and local news affiliates to be required by law to at least provide links, numbers and or the information that what is being said officially, in this instance 16 deaths, may be inaccurate. Or that every “Humane Society” or County Health Agent be required, by law, to make a public statement to the same affect in the instance of any health crisis. We are in the information age and are incredibly deprived of information. I understand the responsible party choosing not to expose the true gravity of the situation for financial and liability reasons but I cannot understand our government continually allowing the public it serves to be duped.

I am outraged at Menu Foods. They knew there was a problem at least by 2/20/07 but didn’t announce this to the public until 3/16/07. I have a cat that has renal failure that started to show symptoms on 2/15/07. The public should have been notified about this problem when it was first reported to Menu foods. NOT after Menu Foods killed more animals doing their own testing first.
I feed feral cats and there will be no way we can know if they are missing because they have died from natural causes or were poisoned by the recalled foods. I AM OUTRATED! WHO WILL BE ADDRESSING THIS FERAL CAT ISSUE?

I watched him till about 4:30am, he just went down hill quickly and he had been so uncomfortable and crying in pain … I called an ER Vet and took him in. NOW my dog had a liver huge and was beyond weak. Lots of xrays and labs were done. I was exhausted….he was exhausted, we guessed at what was going on with him. There was no option but to put him to sleep. Many have kidney issues but I have read others with sudden liver problem..who is to say what caused it. My research says toxins. Poison will make one toxic.
Till I fed him these foods, he was fine. You call it. I am buying no canned foods for my 3 cats. I cook for them now. I want some justice for all of us who love our animals.

I have a Pug who is like my child. By the Grace of God I did not feed her any of the substandard food being recalled. However, I had been feeding her what has been touted as a “premium” dog food. I have now switched to a hollistic, human grade dog food manufactured by a company that makes ONLY pet food, and I will NEVER, EVER AGAIN purchase another bag of that so called “premium” dog food, which I now know to be like letting my dog eat from a trash can. Maybe worse. After finding out that they continued to kill innocent animals by continuing to feed that garbage to them, I will also be boycotting alot of their other products. They knew for at least a month that this was happening and said nothing. They are the worst kind of greed mongers, preying on helpless, innocent animals and the people who love them all in the name of the Almighty Dollar.

A petition to change the FDA policy of permitting ‘Diversion of Unfit Food to Animal Use (http://www.fda.gov/cvm/Policy_Procedures/3650.pdf) is needed to strengthen protection for pets from this practice of diverting unsafe and unfit food to animals. The FDA leaves pets unprotected because pesticide contamination in excess of the permitted tolerance or action level and where the pesticide involved is unapproved for uses on a food or feed commodity is a criteria used for their FDA Diversion Request to animals. The FDA diverts food unfit for human use to be used for feeding animals. The FDA responds after they receive complaints but there is the possibility of unsafe and unfit raw materials being widely distributed for human use, making it a potential security threat. The FDA is checking for that now. Unsafe and unfit food is not fit for consumption.
The pet food standards described at FDA Sec. 690-300 Canned Pet Food (CPG 7126.18) are unacceptable and those commodities used may violate standards before processing, some occuring from packing house offal or the tissues of animals that may have died otherwise than by slaughter and diseased animals. This info is found at http://www.fda.gov/ora/complia.....0-300.html .

My cat Fester went into the hospital on Tuesday, March 20th, and had to be uthenizied on Friday, March 23. They treated him with antibiotics and IV fluids to no avail. His enzyme levels were 141, normal range 30. He also had ulcers in his mouth from vomiting. I had his blood tested for the third time with the same grim results before I made the decision to put him down. The vet informed me that there was little chance , 20% possibly, that his kidneys could ever recover. I fed him the Special Kitty brand food three times a day for a year. So much thinking you are spoiling your pets with the food they enjoy so much. I am heartbroken that this company did not inform consumers quicker than they did. So many of our beloved pets could have been saved. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone that is going through the loss of their pet or still visiting their vet’s office everyday as I did.

We have a well documented case of our cat’s (Vanity) kidney function being normal prior to a dental exam. With fewer teeth, she needed soft food because she couldn’t chew the hard food. March 6, ‘07, our cat was diagnosed with a heart murmur (related to poisoning) and renal failure. Her condition is grave, prognosis is poor. We have the store receipts where we bought Special Kitty (Wal Mart) food.
This hasn’t affected only the ill cat, but EVERY member of my family. We are heartbroken, as we don’t know if our cat will survive and we are taking drastic measures to save her. We are planning to sue Menu Foods, but no amount of money can replace a loved one. The vet bills have bankrupted my family but we can’t stop treatment because the money ran out.
Hugs and prayers to everyone suffering through this.

I’m totally disgusted with what has been revealed since the recall was finally announced. My 3 1/2 year old cat (Jasmine) became violently ill about ten days ago and I hadn’t heard any news about the recall at that point. When I realized that Jasmine was drinking a lot of water I found the recall list on a website and sure enough, the variety pack of Iams I had was contaminated. I was so upset because I had no way of knowing how long I had been feeding my cat poison and I felt that I had failed her somehow.
I took Jasmine to the vet and after spending $400 I found out that she has damage to her kidneys, the exact extent is unknown. I am one of the luckier owners - Jasmine seems to be doing pretty well now although she has not liked any of the vet-prescribed diet I have since had to put her on.
I feel very sad thinking about how many pet owners have had to watch their pets suffer or die and I am furious at the companies responsible for this mess.
I understand that the owners are supposed to be reimbursed for all of the veterinary costs but does anyone have any idea how that’s supposed to happen?

Time for the pet food industry to be as accountable as the folks that handle food for human consumption.
Look what happened with Mad Cow. I heard its from cattle being fed ground up sheep with a disease that crossed to cattle through their feed. Scrappy I believe is what it was the disease was called. Why feed anything animal diseased or tainted food anyhow? Like who that that was a great idea in the first place?

My cat has been suffering from a skin condion since Aug of last year. 500.00 in vet bills had my vet baffled. I was feeding him special kitty. His sugar in his kidneys was elevated back in Ang. 2006. I thought i was upgrading by switching him to nutro. I know by the grace of God that it’s the only reason he’s alive today. The cuts and gravy are his favorite and i know i have fed him the poisoned canned foods in the past. I have shortened his life and put him and my other cats at risk by feeding them this so called top quality product. I will never buy ANYTHING EVER from menu foods again. I feel betrayed and guilty for putting my cats at risk as everyone eles has. Cough up some of that money ive been giving you losers to compensate for the deaths of these pets and their pain and suffering. Who knows when this actually happened since my cat had symptoms back in aug of 2006. What a bunch of ASSHOLES.

I feed my dogs Kumpi. They are safe - I can NOT tell you the comfort I have in knowing this.
My heart goes out to those who have lost their beloved pets to this irresponsible disaster. Manufactuers need to be held reliable for the suffering of these pets and their humans. We are fed MILLIONS of dollars of advertising to ASSURE us that our dogs are SAFE and HEALTHY on their foods - now look. Menu Foods will compensate for the loss of your pet - but you have to send them your dead pet and the food… what are those who lost their pets early on to do? Dig up Fido? What about those who were cremated? What an easy out they gave themselves. Isn’t the vet’s records enough! These were HEALTHY pets - now they are dead.
In December, AS A TREAT, I had fed my year old Yorkie just TWO pouches of Nutro - a brand I had fed fosters before Kumpi. He suffered seizures. My vet asked if I had poisons around the home - we looked at EVERYTHING - however, I had fed Nutro before. I had thought it was the chicken jerky I had purchased - they were made in China. I didn’t think anything about the Nutro. Now I think about it all the time… now I think about how he has not had another seizure since those two pouches. My dogs eat Kumpi and ONLY Kump. THANK YOU Evy for letting me sleep at night - with my healthy dogs around me. FEED KUMPI: www.kumpi.com

The standards for safe and healthy food that millions of people feed their beloved pets must be raised to the highest standards. A blind person who looses his or her seeing eye dog; a child who looses his or her beloved animal; and any other human who benefits from the companionship of his or her animal deserves such standards, as does the animals so many humans depend upon for companionship, assistance, and human growth as spiritual beings.
Sincerely,

Regardless of human or animal, a tragedy has occurred and the responsible party should be held accountable. In this case, Menu Foods has distributed foods that have cause illness and death. But not only Menu Foods, the companies that use them should be held accountable to ensure Menu Foods is producing safe food that is not only safe for animals to eat but safe enough for a human. I would assume this would mean a major shift in the pet food industry with no more dead, diseased and dying animals put in pet food. I mean, how safe can that be? And better testing on the ingredients to ensure it is human grade. That is why I have moved away from traditional pet foods and feed my pets Kumpi Food and Dick Van Patten’s Wet Food called Natural Balance. Thank God I switched from Nutro last October. Because the cans listed on the recall were ones that I used to feed my companion animals. My heart goes out to those who have lost or may lose a loved one.

Turbo was a perfect little 4 pound, 4 1/2 month old Maltese puppy. He was loved as our child. He died at the Vets office as they tried to treat him for this poisoning. His blood work was off quite a lot the first day when I first heard about the recall. By the next day his CBC blood work was off the charts and he ceisured and died a horrible death.
If Menu foods had released the information when they first knew about it as they should have Turbo would be alive now. By stalling for several days or weeks, they killed by little boy.
I am outraged at how the FDA and most of the media are handling this news and how they are grossly skewing the death toll and number of sick pets.
We have reported to the FDA, Nutro Pet Food Co., and Menu Foods Co. The people we have talked to at the FDA have given us no direction for what they are doing for this tragety nor have they givin us any type of case number or reference to our complaits.
Please help to get somthing done to prevent this again,

We agree wholeheartedly that the marketers, and manufacturers, of the food, and treats, that people purchase, for the nourishment of their Animal Companions, need to be held accountable for what goes into their product, and for it being safe for consumption before it reaches the shelves of Retailers.
We also want to encourage all Human Companions to do all they can to inform themselves about care, and feeding issues related to their particular Animal.

My dog, Furby, was being fed Mighty Dog pouched food for a few months now. I’ve just recently heard about the recall and was shocked. Needless to say, despite the fact that the numbers on the packages we have don’t indicate it is among the poisoned food and he shows no symptoms, I will no longer be feeding my pet this product. From now on I’ll be making Furby’s food myself from the same ingredients used in MY food. Hopefully, many other pet owners will follow my example and limit further profits being made by people selling sub-standard food for our precious companions.

Ol’Roy pouch food, Missy’s absolute favorite, forced us to put her down on February 16, 2007.
I want to see the true scope of this destruction published. I want to know exactly how many animals lost their lives, or had their quality of life reduced or shortened. I want to see these numbers splashed across every news wire and front page in this country. I want the companies involved to be held accountable for, and recognize, these losses and I want to see changes in the pet food industry to ensure this will not happen again. Unfortunately, I doubt any of these things will happen. We’re talking big business and government here, not a promising combination, unless they are looking out for each other.
I want to see pet owners educate themselves on what animals REALLY need in their diets. I want to see pet owners spend their dollars stateside, not only on pet food, but all things animal related. And while we’re at it, let’s extend that stateside spending to include items for humans, too. Just because our misguided government has opened the doors to imports, doesn’t mean that we have to buy those imports. I have HOPE that these things will happen because these are things that WE can do. Let’s make a dent in their bottom line. They’ll get the message and changes will follow.
IF, I get over the loss of Missy, our Havanese look-alike, and find the courage to get another dog, I may just cook another portion and feed her from our table. My childhood companion lived to be 15 years old on table scraps and then his death was caused by a car. That’s more years than Missy was allowed, thanks to Menu/Ol’Roy. After all, isn’t it the dog food companies that tell us table scraps aren’t good for our animals? Wonder why????
A nice old lady told me once that she believed there was a hotter place in Hell for people who mistreated animals. With all my heart, I hope she is right.
I grieve as you do, so I’m sending thoughts and prayers your way.

It is incredibly horrible that companies with the image that they “care” about animals were so slow to react to this tradgedy, and that they are doing so little. Standards for animal food should be the same as they are for human food. You wouldn’t want to drink soured milk, eat rotting meat, etc. An animal shouldn’t have to either. And they shouldn’t be exposed to such health risks. Their health is just as important. Food manufacturers should be taking all measures that are needed to uphold a high quality of food for animals. My heart goes out to all that have lost their furry family members.

How do we know what is safe and was isn’t? Where did the poisoned wheat go? How do we know that it didn’t make into the Cheerios we feed the kids or the Frosted Mini Wheats we eat for breakfast? The FDA has dropped the ball on this one!! I have stopped feeding my 2 yr old Coton de Tulear ANY store bought dog food. He gets chiken and rice. My 4 cats are fine and eat Hills Science Diet. I have considered stopping that for them and puttng them people food. As pet owners how long can this go on? How do you place a value on your beloved pets? I couldn’t- the pain and suffering if one of them died due to the food would be to much, but Menu foods and I feel the US gov’t- needs to be held responsible for all the vet bills and losses from this. I also feel they need to be held responsible for long term care of any animal that pulls through this and may need life long treatment.

I work at a Veterinary office. I am simply appalled at what has been allowed happened. We have had several clients come in and are in Intensive Care because of the tainted foods. One sweet kitty passed on this weekend because of it. Others are being monitored and their outcome is unknown. Pets may just be animals to you…but to many of us, they are our friends, companions, and confidants…Those at fault should be held accountable. There should be required testing for those food items. I have seen both animals, and people die first hand. I cared for a Grandmother under hospice as well as pets in last moments of life. And as they breathe in that last moment of air, they are one in the same - A living, breathing creature. I will not stand by and watch innocent lives be extinguished.

Some years ago, against my better judgement because of the stench coming from the cat food, I put it in the bowl of my cat and she eat some of it. Ever after, she refused to eat it.
Nevertheless, shortly after eating the stinking food she fell ill, gradually lost wait, yes, foamed at the mouth, her breath intolerable, refused to eat or drink water altogether, could no longer make it to the litter box, and I had her put to sleep.
Shut this stinking pet industry down, and make those responsible for producing this death-dealing garbage for our animals, not even to mention the cruelty of tests performed on animals. It’s nauseating.

Our pets are family, not “property” as some believe. It is reprehensible that the pet food industry, including so called prescription and veterinary
diets, are not held accountable to higher standards and optimal quality
control. Unsafe preservatives, pesticides, rodenticides and poor grade
by-products have no place in any food source. My heart goes out to those
impacted by this tragic event….it is an example of negligence and arrogance on the part of Menu foods in particular, and the pet food industry

“The Associated Press continues to report 16 dead pets, without even mentioning the possibility that there are hundreds if not thousands more. So does Newsweek….……..
So far, both the Animal Medical Center (the “Mayo Clinic†of veterinary hospitals) and Banfield The Pet Hospital, with more than 600 locations all connected by a central database, have both gone on the record saying there could be thousands of pets sickened or killed by recalled food.
So what’s up, AP?
This afternoon, we got an e-mail from a person in the news department of a radio station, who pointed out to his boss that other media — such as USA Today and ABC News — have been reporting a potentially much higher death rate, and asked to change the AP’s “rip-and-read†radio copy. He was told he could not, and until the AP decides to do more than parrot the FDA line, the story will remain largely under-reported. That means the story of our pets will soon die.”
What should we do?
Try to call talk shows.
Write letters.
Talk to people.
Have people sign potitons.
Big money does not give a damn about quality.
Our pets have been killed.
We have posined spinich tainted with e-coli.
This has never been tested until recently.
We have men an women dying in Iraq that need armour
for the humm-vs (hummer, Miltary transport) to protect them selfs fom bombs. Our Mlitary cuts corners, Food production keeps geting corns cut.
We the people and our pets are dollar signs. Few pets here and a few humans there die. It gets cleaned up. Well forgoten. This goes on all the time. I had for healthy cats die in we one summer. They were a round 10 years old. Kidney Failure is what killed them. I swear the food is what killed them. (This was about 4 years ago)
The gread of the people is going to destroy our world. (Now I hear some out there saying wakco) The climante is being destroyed, In the US now year social helath care, most peoples pay does not eqaute to cost of living, and even most supervisors want you to work 6 to 7 days a week. Then you can not enjoy family and life.
My point is this,if a big company and/or people can not respect and protect each other, the lack of courtesy to living things will end this world.
This maybe a very deep though but thats what the world needs.
I pray for change and good will to all.
PEACE

Seems that Menu Food has widened their list again - March 26th AM. The list now contains a food that Menu Foods and the Nutro said were safe (I called both companies and asked). Good thing I’ve learned not to trust big business - I threw my cans out last week. Do they even know which foods were contaminated? How can they continue to operate when no one has determined whether machinery was contaminated, whether the dates for the recalled cans are correct, whether this wheat was used in any foods for human consumption.
Wake up America. If you think human food is any safer, you’re living in a dream world. This is what we get for turning our country over to people who are in the pocket of lobbyists and are only interested in enriching themselves.

I had my cats tested today, they are fine for now. I do know that they ate poisoned pouches, or cans at least 2 times since February, based on their urine output those days and sleeping all the time. I have receipts showing 15 pouches purchased in February alone with the recalled stock numbers. If the company truly knew what they had done, they should surely be held accountable.

I just finished reading a number of the comments and I decided to speak up too. One comment was questioning “dry” food and I am so glad to find someone else that feels it is not just the “wet” food. I just lost my cat, my precious baby boy Andre on February 11, 2007. I had to make that ultimate decision that no pet owner wants to make and it has been devistating for me. He was healthy just before Christmas and then Christmas week I noticed he was wanting water constantly and acting strange at the time I was on vacation at my sister’s, but as soon as I could I took him to my vet. He was in kidney failure. He was 11 yrs and would have been 12 on February 23, 2007. One minute he was healthy, even though he was older and the next minute he was sick and I could not save him. He was my child. I will never get over his loss. CONGRESS NEEDS TO KNOW THAT WE WANT THE PET FOOD INDUSTRY HELD RESPONSIBLE AND THEY NEED TO BE REGULATED.

My cat who previously had normal bloodwork at the end of Nov. 2006, now has kidney failure after being fed the recalled canned cat food. He needs subq fluids every other day. I spent the last 3 months working with his vet trying to figure out why he was so sick, putting him through numerous tests and watching him suffer. This has been very devastating for us. I am sickened by the fact that I fed him this food and have shortened his life because of it. He is like a child to me. I can’t bear the thought of losing him…I am truly heartbroken.

I had two cats, unfortunately I had to put my baby down on March 8th due to severe Kidney failure. The second one is still alive and is being hospitalized today since there might be hope for him as he wasn’t eating as much of the recalled food as my baby boy. The Bill just for the blood test and to put him down ran $ 193 and now we’re looking at another $ 600! The Petfood company needs to pay for all the damage they have done! We trusted them many years and fed our pets with their food… and now this!!!

Our cat has the kidney failure. We are hoping he will make it. He went from 15 pounds to 9 pounds in 2 weeks. My heart goes out to all those who lost thier beloved family members. I say family member because Booger bear isn’t our pet he is a member of our family. menu foods should pay for thier actions or should I say lack of actions. No amount of money will help pain and burden we have been through. But it wll get them where it hurts, in thier pocketbooks.

My cat Windor died feb 7 2007. the vet said he had kidney failure and there was nothing we could do to save him, he died two days later, in my arms, i dont believe in euthenasia, but suffered longer.
i have other cats, he was the youngest so probably ate more. i divide a can of Special Kitty, the purple or pink labels, between the cats. I also usd to buy Special Kitty dry food.
i called walmart, and they say they have not pulled them off the shelves, only the gourmet in the packets, which mine would get one divided every few months as a special treat. none have had the packets in quite awhile, as i am ill and the list i make for my children is already long.
my cats are in trauma, their feeding routine is changed, and cats dont like changes.
They had been throwing up now and then, for awhile.
I love them as much as i love my children, they are my children at home, as now my human children are adults.
i dont want other’s to suffer the loss of their babies, and it is such a mess, i dont know what kind of food to trust. so i am making homemade foods from tuna and rice, and boiling chicken. but they are none of them eating well.
this is savage, this is an outrage. these are living creatures, who love me and help me, as i am on liver transplant list and have some hard days. they make sure i eat, they make sure i dont fall, leading me through the house day and night.
but if they did nothing, they are helpless creatures in my care, and i am so confused.
I am sorry for other’s who have had to watch their beloved pet die or be sick.
sorry this is so long, but most of all, i want all the tainted food taken off the shelves immediately.
Linda

There should be a way for consumers to trace all pet food ingredients from arrival at processing plant back to the ultimate point of creation. I wanted to know what the USDA inspection reports were like on the farms that grow the beef or chicken in my ‘human grade’ meat pet food. Pet food companies will not and do not give out this information. Perhaps if they were obligated to do so they would hold to higher standards! I would gladly pay more for my pets’ food if I could assure myself a complete level of confidence in my pet food manufacturer.

I have a cat who is suffering from the effects of the foods (he has had 4 different brands). He is almost 18 years old and is having a difficult time fighting. He has always been a healthy cat until this happened. I treat him at home and take him in for weekly rechecks, by bill is climbing! I work for a vet, but it doesn’t make it any cheaper, it just makes it easier for me to take him in. We have accumulated several hundred dollars in vet bills over the last 2 months. I hope something changes in the pet food industry, my pets are like my kids and I know a lot of people who feel the same way!

I did not lose pets to this, thankfully, but it has brought up additional research into what exactly is in pet foods. It’s apalling when compared to the marketing. The waiting to report known problems should not happen. I do feel like the tumor that led to having to put my dog to sleep was due to commercial foods after seeing what passes for definitions on the list.
Poison is a terrible way to lose a pet. Anyone in a position of trust - as pet food companies are - should be as concerned or more so with safety as profit. I wouldn’t take a truckload of Menu Foods produced food right now if it was delivered free. Between that and the insensitive email left at a local SaveALot I will no longer support that store either.

My dog died after consuming tainted food (I only have one poch as proof and IAMS wanted me to mail that to them, my ass) the rest I used to torture and kill my best friend. I am livid at learning they (menu foods)had the information on Feb. 20th and proceeded to kill ten healthy animals for testing purposes…all that time I am cramming poision into my dog. She was drinking lots of water and had become extremly lethargic with bouts of diariah. Had I known of the recall and the side effects she probably would be here today. During the first week of February my cat ate 4 cans of pet pride. During the second week she fell very ill. I took her to the vet where she was diagnosed with crf and hospitalized for four days. Her numbers did not improve with treatment and in fact worsened. I took her home as there was nothing else I could do and during the night sat with her as she cried
out in pain. The following morning (February 28) I made the hardest decision I have ever had to make to give my baby the last gift I could and let her go. I believe it was what she wanted as she was in so much pain. I cried and held onto her the whole way to the vet knowing this was our goodbye and she seemed to understand. I held her in my arms as they adminastered the injection and as she passed from this world. My baby was 16. I found her as a kittenwhen I was taking the garbage to the dumpster, I was 12 and she had been with me ever since. I miss her. I know things happen and sometimes they are not preventable, but am upset in the way things were handled. They knew animals were dying but didn’t care. The more expesive brands like iams biggest concern was that people know that their catfood is superior to the cheaper brands and a “secret recipe”. It never ceases to amaze me the lengths big corporations are willing to go to line their pockets and they should be held accoutable. Maybe it will take a multi-million dollar lawsuit to make them establish and maintain policies and practices to protect our animals.

These guys are worth their weight in gold!I agree with the petition. It seems to me that no one has the “guts” to take the blame for the contaminated animal food. Dog/cat food should be made so that it can be consumed by humans without any ill affect. maxine daCosta and “boys”.

My puppy Max has been eating Nutro pouched puppy food because it was better for him and now I am worried that he will get sick. I dislike the animal testing and feel for every one that has lost a pet as vet bills are expensive - the company should at least pay for the testing of the animals.

I don’t believe in frivilous lawsuits, but with the amount of money the pet food industry is making, basic product safety inspections should be mandatory, and proper package labelling as to manufactuer(s) and country of origin of ingredient(s) should also be required. America has traditionally been the world’s breadbasket; why are we importing wheat from China? I almost lost one of my cats–thankfully he seems to be recovering–but this should never have happened.

18470 j.morris Lost our dog, acute renal failure, Jan 07. Read all the posts, this wet and dry dog food issue is lengthly and a very serious matter. How much toxin, germs, and most definitely ‘unnecessary - unhealthy’ ingredients’ , etc. are in our pets’ food to begin with, along with the added alarm of how much overloaded toxin got in the food recently to destroy so many of our ‘best friends’ ? It would become a very serious matter to all companies to keep our foods , (humans and pets), very healthy ‘IF’ stricter laws were developed and enforced - i.e. compensation if something of this nature and magnitude occurs. Maybe then it won’t be so easily brushed away. Sad, anna nicole smith is getting more air time and attention and she’s not current news, so what does that say to all of us faced with the loss of our pets and the medical expenses of those gone or still in medical care from this issue ? The companies hid the fact there was a problem, and even up to today’s date (March 28th), they ‘are still not facing’ the fact that their numbers are way off what people are reporting / both ill and deaths, and the ‘type of foods’ involved or possibly involved. It would be better to use more caution, then to be relaxed on something so detrimental to anyone’s health, our pets included. They don’t even want to hear from those of us trying to report the suspect dry foods. Heck, they still claim only 15 cats and one dog, and ten of those animals ‘they killed’ in their tests. Come on now, let’s be real about this. That means, 6 citizens are telling the truth about their pet’s illness/death. The rest of us are distraught because we have nothing better to do than make ourselves sick with grief over losing our pets over the very same symptoms, illnesses and deaths from acute renal failure ??? I guess we’re just coincidental according to them, that is if they were open to listen to us in the first place.
Also other products must label their packages with “Manufactured for “so and so” by “so and so”. And it should be the same for any food (including dog food) that is partially manufactured by a particular plant. As many of us are now finding out now, some bigger named brands and holistic brands are partially manufactured by this very same Menu Foods, we have the right to know that and it hasn’t been very easy finding this information out, many of the companies are holding out on telling their customers this information via mail or telephone since this whole incident occurred ! Why should this product be any different, this way everyone knows who they want to stay away from, which is our right to do if we so choose to, in this country.
Something is very wrong in the food and pet food industry and will continue to be if someone of power doesn’t step in and make this right with accountability and tougher enforced laws.

When will these big companies realize that our pets are very important to us. We demand that they take care of and be responsible for the trust we are forced to put in them. When only a few canning companies make the dog food for so many brands the dog food brand companies should over see the process personally because we are putting our trust in them and their brand. These pet food companies are more than happy to profit from our love for our animals, and in their marketing materials recognize that an owner-pet relationship is much, much more. Now that they are responsible for the pain and suffering caused to our “children”, it’s only right that they pay for the damage.
Asking pet owners to take the financial hit of medical bills ON TOP OF dealing with broken hearts is adding INSULT to injury.

Not only do I think that the pet food companies should be held responsible for what is happening to our nation’s pets, I think that the foreign companies who caused this to happen in the first place should be held accountable. It is high time that we stop outsourcing jobs to foreign countries and we should stop contracting foreign countries to service our needs when we can produce the products right here in the United States; especially if those foreign countries have no regard for our standards of safety and security. We should re-develop our own resources for our own United States citizens.

Furthermore a system for reporting unexplained disease and death of animals should be developed, as exists for humans, in order to discover trends and detect problems before they reach this scale.
Such a system would provide benefits not only to animal health but also to human health.

Reposting since I do not see the message after submitting after the first time.
Furthermore a system for reporting unexplained disease and death among animals, as exists for humans, should be established to detect trends and patterns before they affect thousands.
This would provide benefits for both animal and human health.
One complication will be proof. Our cat was diagnosed on 2/5 and treatment began, but we had no idea what the cause was. This food was given as a treat, purchased as needed. We don’t keep our empty pet food containers for a couple months just in case of a problem, who does? As a result our empties are in the land fill and we have no legal evidence whatsoever. The cat has not gained weight after 9 weeks of treatment but is more active and energetic lately.

It is an outrage that our pets have been killed and or deathly ill because of FOOD, we pay for and expensive food at that. ( Iams!!!) I watched my cat dye in my arms after taking exceptional care of him for 17 years and he died because of the food I gave him. These companies definately knew there were problems and tried to hide it, that’s what is upsetting to me, it could have been prevented. There should be more checks and balances in all food distrubition human and pet. Monti was a huge part of my family and it has been devasting for us. My only hope is that some one takes responsibility for their actions.

I just bought a case of Nutro dog food. The pet shop said it was safe to purchase it there. I was looking on the internet the codes of the cans affected. The code on the carton was a different number than on the cans. I’d advise you all to check each can. The cans in the carton were one of the recall codes. So, they are still out there. Beware!!

Even after the fact, I just purchased A case of Nutru dog food from a local pet shop. They said their food was safe. I got home and looked on the internet at the codes recalled. First, I checked the case code a it was not on the list. Then I took out the cans and looked on them. The codes were different than on the case. They were the ones on the recall list. I feed a few cans to my dogs before I noticed it. So keep checking your cans . Beware!! There still out there.

As of the morning of 3/17/07 my cat Giles has been in emergency care at her vet’s office in Detroit, MI. She ate packets of these poisoned Menu Foods brands–specifically, Nutro and Iams foil packets–and went into acute, severe renal failure. I called the Menu Foods hotline immediately after her vet diagnosed Giles and that Saturday afternoon of 3/17/07 is unfortunately burned into my mind. The hotline person was insensitive, telling me that I was the first person to call that day to report a sick animal. I lost it and began crying and yelling that mine wouldn’t be the only call she got.
Almost two weeks later, Giles is not well enough to come home. I try to remain optimistic and pray for her well-being. I visit Giles daily and try to keep abreast of all news about the pet food recall. I guess I just had to get this off of my chest and comment this way as I am feeling so overwhelmed and sad. I cry most of the time now as Giles–previously in excellent health and spirits for her entire life–fights to live and regain healthy kidney function. I am very grateful for itchmo and other web sites that allow for us human companions to share our concerns and questions and stories; if not for these venues, I might cave in to despair about my cat’s poisoning. Peace and justice for us all.

My 2-1/2 year old indoor cat, Ariel, ate slightly more than 1 pouch of the recalled food and is now in acute renal failure-like so very many others. I am now finally hopeful that she may make it, due to very intense veterinary intervention. Ariel has been in the hospital for four days now and is showing some improvement. I haven’t even asked how much the bill is yet, I’m probably just too scared. I recently found out that due to an oversight she won’t be covered under her pet insurance. My Vet tells me that if Ariel makes it through she will have a lifelong condition, and that she will need to be given sub-cutaneous fluids every 1-3 days of her life. She will need frequent exams with expensive lab tests, and will only be able to eat a prescription diet-nothing bought off the shelf. No one can tell me what her life expectancy will be, only that she is now “impaired”. I so very much want her to live, but I don’t know what the quality of her life will be. My life and lifestyle will also be changed dramatically-not to mention the financial aspect of it all. My husband and I have always tried to keep her safe, and give her the best we can. It was our hope that we could live and love her for 20+ years together-now who knows? I tried to only give Ariel the best foods so that she could be as healthy as possible. I thought I could trust a name like Nutro, but now she’s been poisoned. Why should the trusting consumer be held financially responsible for all the medical and lifelong costs. We all acted in good faith and now have either seriously ill, or deceased pets. For most, if not all of us, these pets are so much more to us than just pets. They are precious members of our families. I can only imagine the uncountable number of tears shed for all these dear animals, knowing how many I myself have cried for my sweet Ariel.

I had a yorkie named Zeus that had to be put down due to kidney failure on Feb 15th 2007. He did and was eating Nutro Natural Choice pouches that were on the re-call list. I heard from a company call Crawford Data, and they want me to send them any bills from vets etc that I have. He did not say anything about Menu-foods will to pay for the lost of my Zeus. Zeus was in very good health until he ate that food. No amount of money will bring Zeus back , but I feel that he was taken from me. Zeus was going to be 7yrs. old in May the 28th 2007. He was to young and had many more years left. So if you can tell me if I can be part of a class action against Menu-foods please e-mail me a.s.a.p. Thank you for listening to me I’m still very hurt over the lost of my little boy Zeus.

Our cats and dogs are not just “animals”, they are our loved ones and part of our family. Money cannot bring back our fur babies, but it sure can relieve us of the financial burden of careless manufactureres. My cats did not eat any of the recalled food, but I grieve for all of those who have a lost a loved one.

This recall was too little too late!
-I have lost two cats, both victims of Special Kitty and Nutro foil packs.
-My mom’s cat has also died as a result of eating Special Kitty and now, her registered Springer Spaniel is also dying due to eating Ol’Roy foil pouches!!!
I posted an article on my site about this!

Pet food companies and manufacturers must be held accountable for the production and distribution of their products. There must also be change in Federal legislation regarding the pet food industry. I lost my baby last week to acute kidney failure because I trusted the pet food industry and gave her PetPride dog food.

We lost our cat a week before the news came out and he was only 2 years old and died of renal failure. The vets were stumped and didn’t know how this could happen to such a young healthy cat. One day he was fine, 2 days later he was lathargic and then died. I believe that the cat food is to blame and I look forward to these companies taking responsibility for damages.

My cat Junior died from renal failure a week before this news came out. The vets were stumped as to why a perfectly healthy cat, who was only 2 years old, could die so quickly and we believe it has something to do with the food. I look forward to Menu Foods taking accountablity for the damage they have done to so many families.

I have five dogs and five cats all of which have consumed any number of cans of the recalled foods which I purchased at PetSmart, PetCo and Cobourn’s Grocery Store in Little Falls MN. I am sick to my stomach. I worry about them and wonder how I can even pay for testing on all of them. All are still eating but there are small signs of possible problems. God help me.Someone please help me with this.I would rather have money for testing then anything at this point.

Such a shame that Corporate society does not have a care in the world for the very service they provide, let alone the animals and families that they devastate when their tainted product is massed produced and sold to unknowing customers. Their lack of early response and recall should be punished severely so as to send a message that this behavior will not be tolerated. They are messing with our FAMILIES……including OUR PETS and that is NOT okay.

Thankfully, we have our animals’ food shipped from Evy Serpa in Denver. Our 3 dogs and 4 cats eat KUMPI food. While this petition is a good thing, I can’t imagine any governmental or corporate entity going out of their way to make things right because for them, things ARE right. They’re not interested in making THINGS right…..they’re interested in making THE BOTTOM LINE right. It’s ALL about money. And with regard to all of these dog foods, whether they’re average or high-end — now we see that they all came out of, or off of, the same factory floor. Glad the pricey ones have been exposed. So now we see it’s all about packaging. We buy a bag with lovely colors, or with a name that translates into “get this one, it’s expensive”…..but they’re all filled with the same thing. (I guess they’ve even got the vets fooled.) Sorry to say this, but no one will convince me that the gov’t has any regard whatsoever for family pets. For Christ’s sake! Look what’s is the food WE eat!
Our furry family members, Toby, Gus, Spike, Spanky & Darla and Sydney and Romeo are so lucky to have Kumpi Dog and Kumpi Cat food. This is not an advertisement! It’s simply the TRUTH. Thank you, Every Serpa! You helped our animals avoid eating what corporate America dishes out.
I think if someone wants to hold the pet food industry accountable, perhaps a class action suit would be in order. Take ‘em to Court!
My sympathy to those of you who have suffered such unnecessary losses. :o(

My wonderful and loving Tigger was euthanized on 20 March 07.
In less than a week after eating special kitty he lost his appetite, lost about 31/2 pounds loss muscle tone in his hind quarters and could not walk. He also started vomiting and was partially blind (he could only see
me when I stood directly in front of him
He was 15 and I got him as a kitten. He was an important and special part of my life.

My heart goes out to those who have lost a beloved pet. I can only imagine how heart broken I would be if it had been one of my own. The awful part is that the official number can never be proven - in cases where the pets died even before the recall was announced, or those that don’t still have the food to prove it, or those that can not afford the testing.

Pet food companies make a lot of money off of people who love their pets…of course they should be held responsible for any damage they cause. Also, when a pet food company causes pain, suffering and death to innocent animals by “testing” their foods on them (Menu Foods fed the poisoned food to healthy animals) they should also be held accountable for “animal cruelty.” I don’t know how anyone can trust a Pet Food company who uses Menu Foods to manufacture any of their pet food. People who paid premium prices for “premium pet food” now find out the food contains the same ingredients as the cheaper supermarket brand food!

The biggest fraud in America is the Made in USA label which only guarantees the product was packaged here. It does not even guarantee that the company offering the product is the company that manufactured the end product. A brand name has become a distributor’s label.
To restore accountability we need new label laws, for HUMAN and PET food.
1. We need a ‘Product of USA’ label standard that verifies the contents are all from USA sources.
2. We need a ‘Manufactured by’ label standard to indicate who actually mixed and packaged the product
3. We need a ‘Country of Origin’ standard to indicated the source of the ingredients. This is done on Kroger brand frozen foods ex: ‘Product of Mexico, USA or Guatamala’
4. Most important, we need a Label standard for pet food that demands that all ingredients in that pet food be listed on the label. GRAS standards for humans that allow certain ‘generally recognized as safe’ ingredients to be omitted from the label should not apply in the pet food industry where there are lower standards allowed for ingredients. Pet food is not ‘human grade’ and therefore the consumer should be allowed to know every single ingredient in a pet food.
Anything less than this constitutes fraud on the consumer, and as we sadly find now, a death sentence to thousands of pets.
My own cats became terribly ill. One may not live. I am outraged. I have lost all trust in this fraudulent industry. If you want this industry to survive it must be made honest!

Pets are children in fur coats. If something like this had happened to baby food, then you know that things would have been pulled sooner and financial comensation would be in the works. Some of us have decicen either not to have children or can’t, and pets are our children with the same love attached. Losing a pet is the same a losing a human family member or child. Please regulate where our ingredients come from for our pets the same as for food fo human consumption!!!

Pets are devoted members of their pet person families. It is imperative that those on whom we rely and trust to help us nourish these beloveds take full and complete responsibility for accidents such as this and do everything in their power to not only correct their mistakes but prevent them from ever happening again. My heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by this situation. These pets are not just our “pets” they are our children and deserve the same amount of saftey and regulations in their food that are currently done for our food. If anything positive can come out of this it is for stricter requirements to be mandated for ALL pet food.

the horror of losing a pet is devastating enough. let alone one caused by well intentioned pet owners who thought they were doing the right thing by buying quality pet food, only to find they had been actually serving death in cuts and gravy. the peanut butter law suits are already rolling forth. does menu food need to follow?

Menu Foods must be held accountable! Granted, we can never bring back the beloved dogs and cats who tragically died from eating this tainted food, No amount of money can do that. Menu Foods should be made to pay for any and all vet bills regardless. I hope now the FDA will take the issue of feeding our animals seriously and regulate this industry who clearly can get away with most anything they want!

It’s disgraceful that pet owners were buying different brands that ultimately were the same food and now it comes out that this is factual and that this same food was contaminated. This is a terribly tragedy and all pet foods should be marked as to who the manufacturer is.

What a horrible mess that could of been prevented. I think Menu foods should be held accountable 100%. What kind of company or CEO gains information about the food being tainted & sits on it for 2 weeks before they announce it.I think they should resign their position & eat a huge heaping bowl of that tainted food. This is animal cruelty & the law should be held up to the fullest just like on any other animal abuse case!!!

Companion animals must have representation and must be protected.
Those whose companion animals have died are certainly heartbroken.
The monetary issues are simply one facet and the veterinarian care given must have compensation - by the manufactures.

My dog had to be put to sleep on Sunday. He had sudden kidney failure after eating an Ol’ Roy product not even on the List of recalled foods. What I am angry about is I just had him to the vet 2 weeks prio and he had a clean bill of health. I read the press statment that was released on 3/30/07 and I am furious at this company now. They seem to be trying to weasle out of any responsibility and try to really act as they care about the pets that they killed or injured. Wonder what attorney wrote that one? They are a company that is in deep financial trouble in the first place. This outsourcing of different suppliers of food is just a way to save a penny. They don’t give one shit about the dogs, cats and peoples lives deeply affected by this. This Paul K. Henderson CEO of menu food knew this was going on for some time and did nothing. He needs to do jail time.

Iams mission statement is about quality products for the better health of dogs. In reality. they buy from the same mill as Wal-Mart. They almost killed my 8 month old Akita. It cost $1250.00 to save her. God have mercy on their corporate souls.

The Animal Protection Institure has a very informative web site on the particulars of making/manufacturing pet food. Apparently it has been federal law to list additives for years but this is only starting to be done. A lot of the preservatives have had no testing and effects are not known. I don’t think I want Monsanto making anything that goes in food I feed my furkids.
I guess the alternative is to just make my own. It’s funny that if I want to market this I have to get all sorts of sanctions and OK’s however the crap that is on the market can even break federal law and no one does anything.

I know of at least 3 dogs in my town that have died recently due to sudden kidney failure (Old Roy). Where is the quality control on pet food? I have several pets, and they depend on me to take care of them, not feed them poison. I feed them brands that have recalled some of their foods, luckily so far, they don’t appear sick. But I’m still worried. Hundreds of thousands of animals depend on our government and food industry to not sell food that poisons them. This has been a sad and grave oversight or mistake by the producing plant/manufacturer, and they owe something to those families who’ve lost their loved ones. It is a crime.

The companies that sell food to any living creature should be accountable, in the event of illness or death. The standards required for humans, should also be the same for our pets. Their idea, that it’s “only” an animal is ridiculous! What if it was their child? Pets are our “children”!

Any company that produces any type of food for human or any other living creature should be held accountable in the event of a death or an illness. The same standards that apply to humans, should apply to our pets. They are more than pets to us. How dare they think otherwise!

To the Executives of Menu Foods!
My animals are my babies! They give you unconditional love, which is priceless! The only other being in this universe that is capable of such love is God, Himself! Remeber this, when you’re sitting there in your executive board chairs pretending to be gods, yourselves! If that doesn’t strike you as a reason to be more frickin’ careful, then how about this - You aren’t just killing a part of someone’s family, but a customer !!!!!!!!!
I’ll never buy Menu Foods again! I can’t believe that you can’t be held accountable!

This is terrible that our pets have to die because of grain being used from another country. My pets are my family and I don’t think the company would have enough money to pay me for the vet bills or my four legged
children—cats or dogs. They are not just animals, they are an integral part of family life.

I will not purchase pet food made by Menu Foods again.
Pet food companies that contracted with Menu Foods should not be let off the hook. We trusted those brand names and they let us down. They should be aware of a supplier’s quality control problems before anyone else. Don’t they even spot-check the product?
Menu Foods must be held accountable for the quality of its product, and must compensate pet owners for vet bills associated with this debacle, the value of the animal if it has died, and an additional amount for suffering.
These pets were beloved animals. Nothing can bring them back, and simply reimbursing the owner for the animal’s value is just not good enough.

To whom it may concern:
Any companies that put the lives of our beloved pets at risk now and in the future must be held financially responsible for the pets’ medical treatment. On the other hand, even if they can put a small price to compensate for the illness or death of our beloved pets, there will always be a sense of distrust and fear that this unfortunate and unforgettable event might happen again years from.
We, as pet parents, pet caregivers, and guardians need legal assurance that our pets food will be regulated in the same high standard as human beings. Any companies must take seriously and investigate immediately any complaints of pet sickness after consuming their food. Any companies that withhold information or delay action after a number of complaints must be legally held accountable. It is a worst crime to ever sacrifice another life of animal just to prevent the company’s stock from falling. Maybe these wealthy executives are empty of empathy when it comes to our beloved pets or they may be able to sleep at night as long as it isn’t their pets that are sick or dying.
Yesterday, I went to Wal-Mart here in Paramount, CA to buy Friskies canned food and Purina One dry food. I noticed that this store is still selling Special Kitty, a store brand I recognized as part of the recalled cat wet food. Today, I got the Albertson’s store flyer from my mailbox. I was horrified to see that they are advertizing IAMS multipack canned dog food, eventhough this brand is included on the recall. Stores (big and small) must be held legally responsible for continuing to sell or advertized recalled pet foods because they are not only increasing the number of ill or dead pets but they are intentionally turning blind and deaf despite the widespread news of pet food contamination. .
I think the worst pain any pet parents/caregivers can go through is to face the hardest and most painful choice of choosing financial euthaniasia for their beloved pets that are very sick due to eating contaminated food. I believe that all loving pet parents must do everything they can to save their beloved pets. Yet, not all of us are fortunate to have money available in the bank or to have pet insurance. Some of us will have to use credit cards to pay a huge vet bill. Some may even financially struggling that the only emergency money available has to be used for basic necessities. And worst, there are those people who are unfortunately in debt and to add a pet’s bill is simply too difficult. So, yes, this kind of pain is much worse especially if there is a chance that your beloved pet can survive yet you don’t have thousands of money available or loaned to you.
I am a pet parents to 6 cats 1 dog. They are very fortunate because their food are not affected by recall. However, I have no reason to celebrate my pets’ luck. My heart is grieving for others and I share their pain because I know too well the feeling of losing a pet you love so much. I and my pets could have suffered these pet parents and their pets’ fate, and I thank God and my beloved cats in heaven to give me more time to love , protect, and cherish my new pets.
