Petition to Require Pet Food Companies to be Held Accountable for Damages

Dogs and CatsWE, THE UNDERSIGNED:

Request that the U.S. Congress enact legislation to require pet food manufacturers and the companies that market those pet food brands to be held financially liable for any medical costs related to or contributing to the illness and/or death of a pet that can be reasonably attributed to the food consumed by the pet. And that all pet foods include the name of the manufacturer, not just the brand under which it is sold.

This petition is in response to the thousands of pet parents and owners who have suffered under the Menu Foods recall and their slow response that started on March 16th, 2007.

In creating this petition, our motive is three-fold:

  1. First, we want to ease the pain and suffering of those who have lost their pets due to mistakes and negligence of pet food makers. The loss or illness of a pet can be emotionally devastating. On top of it, the financial burden of uninsured veterinary treatment can be a double-whammy, leading pet parents and their families to significant financial damage — often affecting other family members such as kids and the elderly. This legislation will create a venue for settling these cases fairly and out of court, eliminating the need for a lengthy court case, which companies rely on in order to reduce the likelihood of payout.
  2. Second, create a financial motive for pet food makers and marketers to set higher standards for pet food. We want to let them know that consumers are interested in higher-grade pet food. And that the longer a company waits in issuing warnings or recalls related to their product, the larger the potential financial damage. This new law would hold the manufacturers (often smaller, less financially sound organizations) and also the larger corporations that market the branded foods — who ultimately control what goes in them.
  3. Third, a clear public disclosure of who actually makes the food. Since the financial liability falls to the brand as well as the manufacturer, the name of the company that actually produced the food should be obvious to the consumer. How much clearer would this recall have been if the food was labeled “Made by Menu Foods”?

Once the final tally of the pet deaths is complete, the petition will be delivered to the head of the congressional committee that controls FDA funding (Dave Obey, D-WI, chairman of House Appropriations Committee).

We have consistently fed our dog, Riley, Eukanuba brand dry and wet food products. Riley’s health was severely compromised from consuming a recalled wet product and now we have been told that he will not recover from his illness. The veterinarians treating him have recommended we euthanize him. He is almost 10 years old, and has been a loving member of our family. However, we need to do what is best for our beloved Riley at this time and we are extremely saddened and sickened about this outcome. Thousands of pets and pet owners, including our Riley and us, have been tormented physically and emotionally from this tragedy. No one else, especially our pets, deserve to go through events such as this. It is imperative that every possible measure is taken to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of our pet population.

I lost my cat due to the pet food being distrubuted by Menu Foods and believe that our animals are part of our families and regulations should be enacted to ensure their safety.

My precious little Pixie dachshund (age 14) died sometime in the wee hours of last Thursday (3-29-07) in a cage all alone at the puppy doctor’s hospital. Got the fateful call around 8:15 a.m. She had eaten Nutro Choice pouch food from 2-6-07 til 3-17-07 when the recall was announced. How her mommy and I miss her! Rest in peace wrapped in Aunt Meggie’s angel wings and wait at the Bridge for us, my little luv bug!

I had a healthy and happy cat on Thursday and a dead cat on Sunday. She was my “trick cat” because she would sit up and beg for treats and catch them in her mouth like a dog!! She went on walks with me without a leash and was a great pal. I hope that this horrible situation will be motivation to more closely monitor the pet food industry.

This makes “me” sick and I haven’t eaten any of this food!
The makers of this pet food should be eating this themselves
to test with. This is totally uncalled for and if it were safe for
“us humans” to eat, then we could share with our fur babies
who we consider to be our daughters & sons also !!

I am so upset about learning that I may have been feeding my precious animal friends poison via their food. I depend on the food companies to make safe products. I am at a lost to say how disturbed I am with this pet food scandel. Companies who distribute the food should make sure where the food comes from is lisated on the food containers and government should make sure that anything we feed our animal companions is safe enough for humans to eat. I am appalled!

My heart aches for those who lost their four pawed family members in this hideous crime. I think that the people who test these foods ought to be required to taste them themselves before ever putting them on the market. They do it in the food manufacturing of pasta etc, so why not pet food????
I have 2 cats and 2 dogs. I am very very scared that there might be more brands that will come forth later and say that they too need to recall. Maybe we need to just go back to table scraps. At least we know what the pets get is what we are getting!

This is so scary. We should be able to take our suspect pets into the vet for required tests without worrying about money. I have 2 cats that show blood in their urine (from using my urine test strips) and it is going to be at least 2 weeks to a month before I have any money to take them in. Do you really think they will be ok?

I am outraged that these companies think this is no big deal. Menu foods lost 9 cats and they took their time recalling this poison. The FDA claims this tainted gluten has been sold to dry food makers but will not release the names of what companies are using it. How can I know what is safe to feed my kitties? FDA, pet food companies, Menu foods must all be held accountable for this mayham. We must boycott companies that won’t take responsibility for this. We must demand safe food for our beloved pets.

i think its a crying shame that a company would send out food for what we all refer to as our furbabys and mans best friend that is not tested to make sure its safe after all human food companys test their product s to make sure its safe why shouldnt petfood companys be held accountable if their product kills if some human gets sick and dies from a product for human consumption the companys are sued and lose millions if a pet food company sells pet food that kills its oh well its just a dumb animal they will get another pet my smokey isnt a pet hes my child and if he is sick i worry and heaven help me if he dies because some companys food caused it
