Petition to Require Pet Food Companies to be Held Accountable for Damages
Request that the U.S. Congress enact legislation to require pet food manufacturers and the companies that market those pet food brands to be held financially liable for any medical costs related to or contributing to the illness and/or death of a pet that can be reasonably attributed to the food consumed by the pet. And that all pet foods include the name of the manufacturer, not just the brand under which it is sold.
This petition is in response to the thousands of pet parents and owners who have suffered under the Menu Foods recall and their slow response that started on March 16th, 2007.
Sign after the jump.
Or read about all the latest news surrounding the recall.
In creating this petition, our motive is three-fold:
- First, we want to ease the pain and suffering of those who have lost their pets due to mistakes and negligence of pet food makers. The loss or illness of a pet can be emotionally devastating. On top of it, the financial burden of uninsured veterinary treatment can be a double-whammy, leading pet parents and their families to significant financial damage — often affecting other family members such as kids and the elderly. This legislation will create a venue for settling these cases fairly and out of court, eliminating the need for a lengthy court case, which companies rely on in order to reduce the likelihood of payout.
- Second, create a financial motive for pet food makers and marketers to set higher standards for pet food. We want to let them know that consumers are interested in higher-grade pet food. And that the longer a company waits in issuing warnings or recalls related to their product, the larger the potential financial damage. This new law would hold the manufacturers (often smaller, less financially sound organizations) and also the larger corporations that market the branded foods — who ultimately control what goes in them.
- Third, a clear public disclosure of who actually makes the food. Since the financial liability falls to the brand as well as the manufacturer, the name of the company that actually produced the food should be obvious to the consumer. How much clearer would this recall have been if the food was labeled “Made by Menu Foods”?
Once the final tally of the pet deaths is complete, the petition will be delivered to the head of the congressional committee that controls FDA funding (Dave Obey, D-WI, chairman of House Appropriations Committee).

What ever happened to. . . “… a dog is a man’s best friend”.
Well my little one, Max, is like a son to me !!! Shame on any manufacturer
or distributor who cuts costs, quality, safety to make a buck.
Respectfully, to the head of the congressional committee that controls FDA funding (Dave Obey, D-WI, chairman of House Appropriations Committee),
please hold this part of corporate America accountable. Thank you!

To many of us, our pets are our family, our children. Even if you cannot relate, please be open to the fact that many people feel that animals and humans are equal. They should have the same respect and rights as people do. We love them, share our lives with them and now it is unfortunate that many of us have to grieve such a terrible loss because of this tragedy. Please do the right thing and give those that lost their lives the courtesy and respect they deserve!

I lost my precious Princess Spumoni because the manufacturers of her Nutro Ultra didn’t think it was necessary to test food coming from another country. We have such strict laws on our food here, why on earth would we buy food from another country who uses such fowl practices. Because this food was not recalled in a timely manner, I repoisoned my dog by trying to make her eat this same product after she was refusing to eat it. I thought she was just being picky, but she loved that food. Both of my dogs suddenly refused to eat their Nutro. This was more than 3 weeks from the recall date. I am just sick over the loss of my Spumoni.

I lost my Princess Spumoni on March 26 because of corporate greed. I can’t believe that the company responsible for purchasing this product from another country would not take the time to test the product they are ordering. We have such strict guidelines on our food in this country, how could we even purchase any kind of food product from another country that has such bizarre practices with their food. She became ill mid February and I kept poisoning her over and over with the food she was refusing to eat. It was not recalled for over 3 weeks from when she first became ill. This just tears me up inside that this could happen. Both of my “furkids” refused to eat their Nutro Ultra. Now this tainted product is in the human food chain? Why can’t we just use the food grown in the US and support our own farmers? I now have 5 brands of dogfood in the freezer that are recalled….this is tearing me apart.

Stop letting animals die because you send jobs to other countries and buy cheap from other countries. If you are so ashamed to keep America alive by buying here and keeping jobs here then it is YOU that is killing all these dogs and cats. I love my country but if my dog or cat dies because you are so non American then you will be held responsible. I will make sure the media eats each and everyone of you alive. After all you will have killed my child. My baby. You make a law that says The Ten Commandments or prayer, anything relating to god may not pass childrens lips or we the public may not see anything set in stone about My Father. I ask you Is this because you know you are working for Saton by dueing what you have and will do? No I am not crazy just sick and tired of your sick games while you fill your pockets. AN EYE FOR AN EYE.

The FDA is not doing it’s job, which is a huge undertaking…….more organization and less bureaucratic red tape would help.
Our pets are family members. Take better care of our pets, and their human families-NOW.
The radicals from within and without must be gleeful as to how easy it is to poison our pets and all Americans!!!!!

I am very grateful that my pets did not die. They did suffer and we had $450 in vet bills. It was an emotional experience for the entire family.
