Petition to Require Pet Food Companies to be Held Accountable for Damages
Request that the U.S. Congress enact legislation to require pet food manufacturers and the companies that market those pet food brands to be held financially liable for any medical costs related to or contributing to the illness and/or death of a pet that can be reasonably attributed to the food consumed by the pet. And that all pet foods include the name of the manufacturer, not just the brand under which it is sold.
This petition is in response to the thousands of pet parents and owners who have suffered under the Menu Foods recall and their slow response that started on March 16th, 2007.
Sign after the jump.
Or read about all the latest news surrounding the recall.
In creating this petition, our motive is three-fold:
- First, we want to ease the pain and suffering of those who have lost their pets due to mistakes and negligence of pet food makers. The loss or illness of a pet can be emotionally devastating. On top of it, the financial burden of uninsured veterinary treatment can be a double-whammy, leading pet parents and their families to significant financial damage — often affecting other family members such as kids and the elderly. This legislation will create a venue for settling these cases fairly and out of court, eliminating the need for a lengthy court case, which companies rely on in order to reduce the likelihood of payout.
- Second, create a financial motive for pet food makers and marketers to set higher standards for pet food. We want to let them know that consumers are interested in higher-grade pet food. And that the longer a company waits in issuing warnings or recalls related to their product, the larger the potential financial damage. This new law would hold the manufacturers (often smaller, less financially sound organizations) and also the larger corporations that market the branded foods — who ultimately control what goes in them.
- Third, a clear public disclosure of who actually makes the food. Since the financial liability falls to the brand as well as the manufacturer, the name of the company that actually produced the food should be obvious to the consumer. How much clearer would this recall have been if the food was labeled “Made by Menu Foods”?
Once the final tally of the pet deaths is complete, the petition will be delivered to the head of the congressional committee that controls FDA funding (Dave Obey, D-WI, chairman of House Appropriations Committee).

I feel very lucky that neither my dog or cat has become ill eating what I thought was high quality pet food. I no longer will be supporting products made in China. I consider myself a patriot and will do my best to “buy American.” I will no longer buy potentially poisoned food for my pets OR myself OR my family.

A survey done by the Pet Food Institute claims that the american pet owners are “confident or very confident” in commercial pet food. Duane Ekedahl president of the FDI said:
“Continued strong confidence in pet food products is a testament to the fact that Americans dogs and cats are living longer, healthier lives due in large part to the carefully formulated, safe and nutritious pet foods on the market.”
The owners of the thousands of pets that died through eating contaminated pet food may well disagree with Mr Ekedahl……….
Pet Food manufacturers are far too busy checking their profits ($38 billion per year in the United States) and stock prices to worry about checking pet food ingredients for quality, safety and nutrition.
Yes this pet food recall disaster will have cost them a few million or so but if you pet owners believe that the deaths of thousands of pets will make these giants of the industry lose any sleep….dream on !!!

Careless pet food manufacturers entered my home and murdered all
three of my cats in December, 2006. Now that I know how pet food is
made, about rendering plants, and how no safety-testing is performed
except on the pet parents’ pets, you would have to prove that you
safety-test every batch of every product prior to sending to the consumer,
and provide real, healthful ingredients, with all sources described on label
before I would buy again. You would have to institute horrendous criminal
and monetary penalties for not providing safe and beneficial product.

I paid Purina $9.95 to kill my two beautiful English Bulldogs. Ginger died in January 2007 and Annie, my adorable 2-year old, died yesterday after a long hard fight for the past 6 months. We are devastated, my 4 children even more so. How could any company, regardless of the product they sale, not be certain their products are safe? Is it not just the plain lack of common sense here? My family is forever changed by this injustice. Do something now!

These people need to be made accountable for the grief they have cause unnumerable pet owners. I lost two beloved cats due to Menu foods. This food was a top of the line food that most people don’t even know is canned by Menu foods, but I know now.
Pets are more than pets they are members of families, and the utmost innocent of victims.

I was lucky I have both my pets. I am sorry for those that lost pets, it is like losing a child when yours are grown or a family member at the least.
I was sickened by the sad stories and I think their should be JAIL time for those responsible.

To all the greedy, uncaring bastards in the pet food business from China, Canada, and the U.S. I wish you could have seen the look in my little French Bulldog’s eyes just minutes before he died in my arms on the way to the Animal Hospital. Each of you deserve the same fate.

My sweet dog Blackie died due to kidney failure—he ate O’Roy dry, Alpo and Pedigree can food occasionally–and had eaten O’Roy biscuits. It was horrible to watch him waste away and then after trying to save him by flushing his kidneys out for 4 days, with no improvement–to let the vet put him to sleep–I still cry when I think of him and what he suffered. The Chinese government have punished the people who put the poison in the food, and the ones who turned their heads the other way for money—WHAT has the United States done to these big Pet food companies who allowed poisoned pet food to be put on shelves to MURDER our beloved pets—our family????? NOTHING!!!!!!! nothing…..

they are ruled by greed & profit.
I was lucky that my cat did not die, but my heart goes out to all of you who were victimized by this.

I think the FDA, Menu Foods, and all involved should be sent to China. Maybe then there would be justice and accountability.

My cat is now really sick due to this food. He is only a year old and his kideny’s are shutting down. We have to give him needles under the skin. 3 at a time, 3 times a day.
My cat has always been playful and loving. Now he just sleeps. I wish there was more that I could do.

It’s about time someone held the manufacturer responsible! They’ve known for months (possibly longer) about the problems their food is causing. Why are they using imported ingrediants anyways??
We longer trust any of these brands and switched to Bil-Jac months ago. Dog is doing great but now I need to research what food is better for my cat.

The government officials of China have PUBLICALLY announced their goal is to destroy America. They have said their plan is destroy our economy. Well with the utmost cooperation from our greedy & corrupt government, manufacturers, and other business entities, and Americans who only care that what they buy is CHEAP, China is doing just that! China has no respect for their own people, animals, or environment so what makes it seem like for a few million bucks this will change and they will suddenly care about people and their pets in another country? Remember, when you buy Made in America it costs more because our jobs and our way of life costs more!
